A vibrant, multicultural city,<br />
Stoke-on-Trent is located<br />
approximately halfway between<br />
Manchester and Birmingham.<br />
Also known as the ‘The Potteries’<br />
the area has been world famous<br />
for pottery and ceramics for over<br />
300 years.<br />
Excellent sports facilities are available<br />
locally. Premiership football team, Stoke<br />
City, play at the Britannia Stadium and Port<br />
Vale FC play at nearby Vale Park. The city’s<br />
theatres stage hit Broadway shows and big<br />
names from comedy and music. A short<br />
distance from campus, you will find good<br />
value supermarkets, as well as the Potteries<br />
Shopping Centre with over 90 top stores and<br />
an excellent indoor market.<br />

We want to make sure that your time at <strong>Staffordshire</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> is not just exciting and challenging, but also<br />
extremely rewarding. Together with the Students’ Union,<br />
we provide a whole range of specialist support services,<br />
don’t worry if English isn’t your first language, this shouldn’t<br />
be a barrier to your studies.<br />
Course Dates:<br />
The course lasts from one to four weeks<br />
from July 23rd to August 19th and you<br />
can choose how many weeks you wish<br />
to stay to improve your English, from<br />
one week to the full four weeks.<br />
Course Fees:<br />
Fees paid will include teaching,<br />
accommodation, weekly excursions and<br />
social events and activities, including<br />
access to the Stanley Matthews Sports<br />
Centre at a subsidised rate.<br />
There will be weekly excursions to a<br />
variety of tourist attractions such as the<br />
historic City of Chester or the wonderful<br />
countryside nearby in the <strong>Staffordshire</strong><br />
Moorlands, Derbyshire Peak District.<br />
Further outings will see you visit the<br />
magnificent coastline of Wales and<br />
you will have the opportunity to take<br />
additional excursions to such places as<br />
London and Edinburgh, these will be<br />
at an extra cost. Please contact us for<br />

<strong>Staffordshire</strong> <strong>University</strong> Summer Schools are an excellent way for you to<br />
sample university life in the UK, improve your English and find out if you would<br />
like to continue your studies at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Who is it for?<br />
The Summer Schools are for students aged over 18 with IELTS levels 3-7<br />
who want to improve their language skills and find out more about British<br />
language, culture and history. The focus of the teaching is on speaking<br />
and communication skills, with daily lessons focusing on themes related to<br />
British life and culture. Students will have ample opportunity to improve their<br />
vocabulary, with the focus being on using English in everyday situations, so<br />
that students will be able to use the language studied in the classroom.<br />
Students are assessed on the first day of the course via a placement test and<br />
placed into groups for the rest of the course. You can be confident that you will<br />
be with other students of a similar level and you can develop your language<br />
skills at an ideal pace.<br />
Accommodation:<br />
We offer accommodation on our Stoke<br />
campus to all Summer School students<br />
in our Halls of Residence. Most rooms<br />
are for single occupancy, some have<br />
en-suite bathrooms and all have shared<br />
kitchen facilities for self-catering,<br />
however, there are many places to<br />
eat nearby. All on campus rooms have<br />
Internet access.<br />
Teaching Hours:<br />
You will receive a minimum of 12 hours<br />
teaching per week – four morning<br />
classes of three hours each, Monday,<br />
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There<br />
are optional afternoon classes offering<br />
eight further hours of study on<br />
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.<br />
Wednesdays are excursion days.<br />

Week One:<br />
• Pick up from Manchester Airport and<br />
settling into halls of residence<br />
• City and Campus Tour<br />
• Welcome orientation by the Dean of the<br />
Business School, Professor Susan Foreman<br />
• English culture briefing and course<br />
induction<br />
• Placement assessment<br />
• Local Tour<br />
• Museum Visit<br />
• Classes – Themes include British history<br />
• Excursion preparation<br />
• Day trip to the historic City of Chester, with<br />
a river tour, the city’s Roman history and a<br />
shopping trip to Cheshire Oaks outlet village<br />
• Afternoon excursion to the City of<br />
Birmingham*<br />
• York City Tour including York Minster, one of<br />
Europe’s greatest gothic cathedrals*<br />
• Optional tour of the Jorvik Viking Museum*<br />
Week Two:<br />
• Classes: Themes include British food, culture<br />
and customs<br />
• Sports activities<br />
• Excursion preparation<br />
• Afternoon cultural visit<br />
• Afternoon trip to Stratford-upon-Avon,<br />
home of William Shakespeare*<br />
• Classes – Themes include : “Scotland”.<br />
• Free time<br />
• Quiz on Britain and the World<br />
• Excursion to the Lake District of<br />
Northern England*<br />
• Excursion to Edinburgh - with a visit to<br />
Edinburgh castle*<br />
• Excursion to North Wales – Visiting Conway<br />
Castle and Llandudno<br />
Week Three:<br />
• Classes –Theme includes: Education<br />
around the World<br />
• Visit to the <strong>University</strong> allotment (vegetable<br />
garden) learning more about British fruit and<br />
vegetables<br />
• Sports/free time: two afternoons<br />
• Excursion: The City of Cambridge<br />
• Countryside excursion, visiting a typical<br />
English village and a farm shop<br />
Week Four:<br />
• Afternoon of free time<br />
• Excursion to Trentham Gardens , a local<br />
attraction<br />
• Excursion to the Derbyshire Dales: Buxton,<br />
Chatsworth and Bakewell<br />
• Afternoon Sports: Mini Olympics<br />
• Classes<br />
• Award certificates for the Summer School<br />
• Farewell Party<br />
* Self Pay. These excursions are not included in<br />
the Summer School fee paid and will incur an<br />
additional charge.<br />
Time will be allocated for packing / unpacking,<br />
preparation for excursions, food shopping<br />
and meal preparation and students will be<br />
supported during their stay to undertake these<br />
activities. Food costs are not included in fees<br />
