As usual the rank will be sited on the pedestrianised area between the Queen Victoria Memorial and the Palace railings. It will operate from 5pm until all the guests have been cleared, which is usually sometime after 7pm. LTDA rank marshals will be on hand to assist you and the highly effective Paddington-style taxi share scheme will be in operation (subject to demand). This usually kicks off after 5.30pm when the rank gets flooded with passengers. If you are looking for some work, come and see us at the Garden Parties. Please only pick up passengers from the official rank and not those that try to jump the queue. Offer ends 31/08/2013 Transport Transport for London has published the results of its river crossing consultation which shows massive public support for a new road tunnel at Silvertown and a new river crossing at Gallions Reach. There were over 10,000 responses to the two consultations and more than 90 per cent of people to the initial consultation agreed that there is a need for more river crossings in East and South East London. The level of support was hardly surprising and it has been suggested the money spent on the consultation could have been better spent put towards the cost of the works. A simple visit to the Blackwall Tunnel at virtually any time of day or night would show there is no spare capacity. During the morning and evening rush hours the traffic regularly queues back across East and South East London with stationary traffic belching out pollutants to the detriment of the already poor air quality. A new tunnel or bridge would alleviate this gridlock, save working London thousands of man hours currently wasted and the simple fact of getting the traffic moving would improve the air quality for a large area. The only surprising bit of the consultation was that there were any objectors to a new river crossing, quite what the objectors suggest we do to get this city moving again is not reported. With London’s population expected to hit 10 million by 2031 and plans to house many of them along the Thames Gateway not doing anything is simply not an option. The New Tunnel from Greenwich to Silvertown could not be delivered before 2021 whilst the proposed new ferry service at Gallions Reach could be up and running by 2017. Easier and cheaper options such as increasing the opening hours of the Woolwich Ferry or buying bigger higher capacity boats and ensuring a two boat service throughout the hours of operation were apparently not considered.
