Hammersmith ‘flyunder’ gets thumbs up

A plan for a two-mile tunnel to
replace the crumbling
Hammersmith flyover has been
given the full backing of the
borough council.
Hammersmith and Fulham
Council leader, Nicholas Botterill,
said the 50-year-old concrete
structure was “a hangover from
another era that should never
be repeated.”
He said the A4 through west
London should opt for a “flyunder”
during a speech at a packed
public meeting in Hammersmith
Town Hall.
The council is now likely to
commission a feasibility study to
examine the finances of the proposal
in more detail.
The elevated trunk road had to be
closed in December 2011 after severe
salt corrosion was discovered.
The flyover was not fully
reopened until May last year but
engineers have said its life is
unlikely to have been extended
beyond about 20 years.
No figures have been
published for the cost of a tunnel
but experts say £250 million per
mile is usual, which would mean
the total bill would be in excess
of £500 million.

With so many fraudsters around it’s
not surprising that Robert
Chesterman hung up the phone
when we phoned to tell him he had
scooped the LTDA lottery.
But, luckily we persevered and
persuaded the 73-year-old that it
wasn’t a prank and he had indeed
won £5,000, because it’s paying for a
great holiday in the sun.
Robert, of Kent, said: “I put the
phone down on him – I thought
somebody was having a joke. We are
going to Mexico in September and it’s
also paid for a new back door, so it’s
come in very handy.”
