preterm birth prevention and the benefits and risks of a<br />

variety of strategies applied to varying populations.<br />

Dr. Susan Ramin is the Emma Sue Hightower Professor and<br />

Clinical trials have been organized with a committee charged<br />

with overseeing the accumulating data since the 1960’s, the NIH<br />

Coronary Drug Project being one of the first such trials. With<br />

the European CHMP, the US FDA, the WHO, and others, use of<br />

DMCs in a variety of trials has expanded. The responsibilities and<br />
