Minutes Of The Board Nick Shanny–September 11th , 2012 NER Board Meeting Members present: Chris Mongeon, Steve Ross, Joe Billmaier, Stan Corbett, Bill Seymour, Adrianne Ross, Kristin Larson, Dave Berman and Jerry Pellegrino. The board met at 6:30 pm on September 11th at The Grill in Concord, NH. We coordinated our board meeting around NCR’s event at NHIS. The official meeting began at 7:52 pm. We started with the Treasurer’s report presented by Kristin Larson. As usual, the reports were e-mailed to the board earlier in the week. All advertisers are up to date and the financials are healthy. A motion was put forth by Steve Ross to accept the report, seconded by Adrianne Ross, and it passed unanimously. Next was an update from Stan Corbett to provide an update on Driver Education. Stan really enjoyed his first season as Track Chair and will be starting to plan for next season shortly. There will be a Track Committee meeting, likely in October, to start the process. Stan had run some preliminary numbers on this year’s rebate program and approximately 53 participants will qualify. We will finalize the numbers over the next month or two. PCA National provided a new tech sheet, which Stan will review. He will make the necessary changes to the current form for next year. A discussion was also held on the criteria we use to monitor DE advancements and instruction. Steve Ross updated the board on the concours held at Larz Anderson on September 8th. We had approximately 75 registrants. Porsche of Norwell was the sponsor for the event, and Vic Elford was a judge as well as a speaker at the event. We will be reviewing the score sheets for next year’s event as they have not been reviewed in a number of years. We also will be having a Fall Vineyard and Wine Tour on Sunday September 23rd. Bill Seymour gave an update on the Fall Tour to Kringle Candle and Kittredge Estate to be held on Sunday October 14th. We currently have 36 cars registered. Bill continued with an update on autocross. NER has two events remaining, Saturday September 22nd and Saturday October 6th. After the September 22nd event, the autocross committee will be discussing a year-end party, similar to the one held last year at Billiards in Ayer, MA. The committee will also be discussing the autocross classifications with NCR to try to become more consistent between the regions. For the Zone 1 Autocross Challenge, NER finished in 2nd place (this was held the same weekend as the Watkins Glen DE event). We also had a successful autocross for the 356 club on Friday August 17th. Steve discussed the current state of the nominating committee. A motion was put forth by Adrianne Ross, seconded by Kristin Larson, and it passed unanimously. A membership update was given by Ginny Young. NER has 1,472 Primary members and 991 Affiliate members, for a total membership of 2,463. During the month, there were twelve new members, four transfers in, and eleven outgoing transfers. We decided to invite Bruce Hauben, Joyce Brinton and Susana Weber to the next board meeting, as the Winter Gala preparation is expected to be a large topic at this meeting. Under the Radar Virginia Young This month’s article is a follow-up to my previous column about my first car and how I acquired it. More brave members have stepped forward with input concerning their first cars, their favorite cars, and how they happened to transition to a Porsche… Alan Davis, of Franklin, MA, is a new member (2012). He is originally from Dedham. Alan is the Director of Project Development for NORESCO, an engineering and construction company specializing in energy efficient building improvements. From December to March, Alan is a ski racer and competes every weekend in the masters division of the USSA at various ski areas across New England. He describes it as, “like autocross on snow, down a steep hill without a car!” His first car was a new 1981 Ford Mustang. Other than his Porsche, Alan says a red 1989 Isuzu Impulse comes to mind. “I can clearly remember reading a Car and Driver article in 1979 about a new car designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro called the Piazza. I bought mine from a salvage shop and all it needed was a clutch, battery, and tires. It had “handling by Lotus.” We’ve had many cars and trucks before and after the Isuzu — some memorable, some not.” Alan continues, “Mentally I began dreaming of Porches in 1970. Forty-one years later, in 2011, I finally bought one. There is a used car dealership in Foxboro that specializes in used Volvos, but one of the owners loves Porsches. He occasionally comes across a good one, drives it for a while, and then sells it on the lot. One rainy Sunday, I did an impromptu illegal U-turn on Route 1 in front of the state police barracks to get a better look at the Porsche, a 2007 911, sitting among the Volvos. Heart pounding, I knew this was what my rainy day account had been meant for; now to explain this idea to my wife Lisa…” Alan considers Lisa to be the unique member of his family. He told me that she is a belly dancer, a kidney donor, and his, “exceptionally caring, beautiful wife, mother, and friend.” So chances are he didn’t have to say too much to become the proud new owner of the Porsche… Mark Shane, another new member (2011), is originally from Australia, and has been in the U.S. for eight years. He has traveled to over 50 countries, and makes it a priority to do two things in each: drive and have a local beer! Mark is the Director of Software Development at MorphoTrust, a security company that makes, among other things, secure credentials. MorphoTrust just might make your driver’s license, as they have the contract for over 40 of the 50 states. Mark says that music and driving are the two hobbies that keep him sane; he plays clarinet and saxophone. He purchased a new 1978 Subaru as his first car. It was a 1600 cc FWD sedan. He tells us, “The engine self-destructed on a long drive about two years into my ownership when a pushrod went into the cylinder and got pushed out of the top (horizontal engine) by the piston. My 1998 Suzuki Cappuccino was my favorite car until I got my current C4 cabriolet. It was very special because it was such a rare car, attracted so much attention, and was fun! I started the Australian chapter of the car club “SCORE” with a friend who also had one. The car was originally designed as a specialty Kei (pronounced “kay”) car for the Japanese market. Space is such a premium that they give incentives to people to buy cars that don’t require a garage and have very specific engine and size restrictions. It is a 3-cylinder 998cc turbocharged pocket rocket. Its roof has a very unusual design (partially inspired by Porsche, I believe). The roof comes off in three sections so you can just remove the section over the driver, sections over both the driver and the passenger sections to leave a T-bar configuration, remove the last panel for a Targa look, or finally lower the rear window (glass) for a full convertible look! It was just so much fun to drive and so easy to park!” He continues, “My first Porsche was a 1978 911SC that I bought while living in Australia. I had dreamed about 911s since I was a young boy, but they always seemed out of my financial reach. I recently acquired my 2002 C4 996 cabriolet. I found it on the Internet through a dealer in Framingham. “ He further says he’s finding it fun to get together with like-minded people.
