Our annual trip to The Glen, which by the calendar is more than five weeks after the Canada trip, seemed to rush up on me like a Daytona prototype at night — all thunder and noise and flashing lights urging me to get moving or get out of the way. With some hard work by our Chief Instructors, Jerry Pellegrino and Matthew Wallis, who stood in for Jerry at The Glen, and our Registrar Mark Keefe, we were able to process last minute registrations and cancellations and were even able to clear most of the wait-listed student drivers. We ended up with 140 drivers, the best turnout to date since this event moved to a weekend. Thursday, Carie and I caravanned out with Joe “Track Ops” Billmaier and his wife, Julie. This time we took the northern route and stayed on the interstate until we turned south on 114. This made it a lot easier to get gas for the truck by stopping at a rest area as opposed to getting off the highway and chasing down side roads, hopefully not too far, for gas. The trip was uneventful until Joe had a blowout on his tire trailer. Luckily, this happened at slower speeds, after we turned off the interstate. The experienced pit crew (Joe and I) had the tire changed in a few minutes and it was on down the road to the Harbor Hotel. Once there it was check in, leave the ladies to check out the fancy digs, and head for the track to drop off trailer and cars and get everything set up for Friday. I might add that the Harbor Hotel and the food there lived up to our expectations, which were based on recommendations from some of our drivers who stayed there last year. Friday went flawlessly for most of the 140 plus drivers. After the track went cold everyone headed for Clute Park Lakeside Pavilion for our usual beer/wine/soda and snacks social, which got the drinks and conversation flowing. A half hour or so later the food from Jerlando’s showed up and everyone was treated to an Italian dinner including salads, lasagna, pasta, and pizza… and more beer, wine, and soda. Adrianne Ross, our social coordinator and frequent at-track registrar, and I particularly express our appreciation of the folks who helped pick up the drinks and food, set up and put away the picnic tables, and made sure we left the park as clean as when we arrived. Saturday was another great day on track with some real-time schedule changes to account for clean-up of fluid dropped on the track. We combined the Red and Black run groups Saturday afternoon which is something I, as a Black run group driver, particularly enjoy. I usually run faster in a group and running with the mix of cars at The Glen was a lot of fun (and, I’m sure, helped me set a personal best for WGI). Sunday, our last of three days, was another great track day with a few more clouds and a nice breeze. Sunday’s planned Red and Black Enduros became a combined Red/Black 90-minute Enduro, which went off without a hitch. The extra 30 minutes saved from the planned two Enduros was spread across the remaining afternoon runs, giving everybody some extra track time. We ended the day with leftover soda and beer from the social. We also ended the day with some rain — rain that stayed away until after the track went cold on Sunday. Perhaps the umbrellas we gave out to our registered drivers contributed to the lack of rain, as it never rains when you’re prepared for it. I guess bringing 160 umbrellas to the track could be considered being very well prepared. Perhaps we suffered so much rain from Hurricane Irene last year that we deserved a break this year! The mix of driver home areas at our WGI event was again widely distributed, with NCR the second largest group followed by UCR. We had participants from as far away as Texas Driver’s meeting. continued from previous page and California. Downeast, CVR, NNJR, Potomac, Niagara and Hudson Valley regions were represented, along with Milwaukee, Riesentoter, Mid Ohio and Suncoast regions. Central New York, Central Indiana, Central Wisconsin and Central Coast California regions were also represented. Almost everyone drove their favorite Porsche for the event with a double handful of other marques including BMW, Corvette and Miata joining in the fun. It’s hard to believe that the 2012 NER DE season is over. As I write this, late again, our final event at NHMS 11-12 September is already a week in the past (I’ll report on it next month). A preview — we finished the 2012 DE season with no rain for the year! The chase is on!
