Dear Friends,
It’s remarkable to think I’m spending my second year as
President of Bishop Hendricken High School. I am heartened
and gratified by the continued support I have received in the
various initiatives we have undertaken. Thank you for all of
your work, prayers and financial gifts that help Hendricken
grow in its mission to bring every member of its community
closer to God.
When anyone asks about my vision for our wonderful school,
my answer is always two-fold. We should proclaim and celebrate
our Catholic identity. And we should strive daily to ensure that
any young man who desires a Hendricken education can
experience one, regardless of his family’s economics.
These are difficult times. I hear stories every day of parents who want their sons to attend
Hendricken but cannot afford the tuition. Although we sit in the middle of the pack statewide in
terms of tuition ($11,650 this year), we have the best product to offer. As schools all around us
reduce what they provide their students, we are adding academic, extracurricular and
technological opportunities at every turn.
I realize everyone’s financial situation is different. But I also know everyone can give something
so we can continue to maintain our place as this region’s premier Catholic, college preparatory
school for young men.
Joseph Healey, ’84, one of Hendricken’s most treasured benefactors, sponsors 10 Hendricken
students this year, and plans to pay the tuitions for 16 of them by 2014. He started contributing
to the school only a few years ago. When asked why he didn’t get involved sooner, Joe said,
“Because no one asked.”
So, I am asking you to help. Please prayerfully consider a donation to our school’s Annual Fund.
The goal this year is $200,000. With better than 10,000 alumni stretched over more than 50
graduating classes, that figure is certainly attainable.
We are a blessed institution inspired by the charisms of Bishop Thomas Hendricken and Blessed
Edmund Rice. We are a Catholic community, and you and your families remain in our prayers
always. Through God’s grace, we will continue to provide a wonderful experience for the young

Your gift to the Annual Fund helps
Academics
Graduation 2011 provided the perfect portrait
of Bishop Hendricken’s pledge to best educate
every boy who enters our doors. The Class
of 2011’s top four students by academic rank
all finished their careers ready to enroll at Ivy
League schools in the fall. Phillip Murray received
a minutes-long standing ovation after becoming
the first graduate of the Hendricken Options
Program, a four-year-old endeavor, and the
only of its kind in the Northeast, to provide a
Catholic secondary education for students with
intellectual disabilities. “All graduations are special,
but the 2011 graduation was spectacular,” said
BHHS principal Jay Brennan, ’72. “All of our
students continue to be beacons of hope for the
future.” Annual fund dollars help fuel those
beacons by providing classroom technology, and
professional development for faculty. They also
support our Edmund Rice Scholars, who take an
accelerated math and science track over their
four years.

Athletics/
Extracurricular
Stretching the school’s mission beyond the school
day long has served as a Bishop Hendricken
hallmark. The burgeoning Arts Program features
about 300 of our students in myriad roles on stage
and behind the scenes: some will perform in 2012
in Scotland, Spain and Portugal, thanks in part to
Annual Fund dollars. The money also helped pay
for a new press box at Hayden Stadium, home of
the soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, and track and
field Hawks. “Bishop Hendricken is a complete
school, with an activity available for every
student interest,” said BHHS president John A.
Jackson, ’71. “Our mission comes alive daily in our
classrooms, theater, science and computer labs,
and playing fields. At a time where many schools
are cutting activities in arts and sports, BHHS
continues to expand to meet the vast majority of
its students’ interests and provide them a complete,
Catholic, college preparatory education.”

Our Mission
Bishop Hendricken’s ongoing transition to lay
leadership embodies the start of a new era in the
school’s illustrious history. Still guided by the
charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the
Congregation of Christian Brothers who led the
school for 40 years, Hendricken has grown in
commitment to its mission statement —
strengthening each young man’s relationship with
God through the development of heart, mind, soul
and body. Former BHHS principal Vincent F. Mancuso
leads that charge as the school’s first Vice-President
of Mission Integration. “The Office of Mission
Integration ensures that the mission permeates
all that we do inside and outside of Bishop
Hendricken,” Mancuso said. “We are confident
that this effort will add to an already great legacy
in the area of mission driven education.” Annual
fund dollars will help students participate in
Catholic leadership opportunities and perform
community service, particularly on mission trips
to Kentucky, New Orleans, and Lima, Peru.

Planned Giving
To help introduce alumni to
planned giving, Bishop
Hendricken, in conjunction
with alums Frank Giorgio, 96,
and Brian Lamoreaux, ’90,
will host a series of dinners at
Ritrovo Restaurant in East
Greenwich. The sessions will
include information on the
benefits of a will or trust, and
whether charitable or planned
giving should be part of
your estate.

“Supporting Catholic Education is my primary motivation
for giving. Everything I’ve been able to do is because of my
education. Hendricken serves as a good, specific vehicle

As Dr. Daniel Harrop, ’72, contemplated his financial legacy, he ranked
supporting Bishop Hendricken’s mission as one of his highest priorities.
Hendricken’s pride in Dr. Harrop stems from his tremendous professional
success as a psychiatrist and long-time Brown University Medical School
faculty member. His pride in Hendricken has prompted him to become one
of the school’s greatest benefactors through donating stocks and including
BHHS in his will.
“It’s not just the three R’s,” he said. “We need more people who are
moral thinkers who want to make society better and have a real devotion
to the Church.”
Dr. Harrop’s commitment will help Hendricken develop that sort of
young men for decades to come. His planning will allow the school to
receive financial gifts into perpetuity. And he said he hopes his fellow
BHHS alumni will follow his lead.
“It can be somewhat painful to discuss,” Dr. Harrop said of planned giving.
“But if you don’t do it, things are worse for the people left behind.”

“Bishop Hendricken has been an important part
of my life and has had a tremendous impact on
all that I have achieved, experienced, and
accomplished in life, so far. The many friends
I started to make in 1978 are still some of my
closest friends today, and we still get together and
communicate every few weeks or months. My
two brothers, Paul ’85 and Patrick ’87, also enjoyed
and greatly benefited from their own Hawk
experiences and have also had very successful
and rewarding careers and meaningful and
fulfilling lives. My two sons, Thomas ’10 and Brian
’12 have also continued the Reilly Family tradition
of becoming solid Hendricken men and have both
developed a keen global perspective
with empathic hearts.
I continue to support Hendricken in every way
I can and will do so even after my son Brian
graduates in 2012. I could never express enough
my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the school
and its incredible and dedicated staff and
coaches for all that they have done for our
