CATTLE MAY RETURN TO
WONNANGATTA
The Minister for Environment Ryan Smith has
announced that the State Government is
applying to the Federal Government for
permission to conduct grazing trials in the
Wonnangatta Valley.
‘We stand ready to assist with the trials if we
are requested to do so” Mr Lovick said.
Wonnangatta Station was privately owned
and it grazed cattle from the early 1860’s
until it was resumed by the Cain Government
in 1988. It is at an altitude of 500 metres.
Recently a delegation of Mountain Cattlemen
gathered overnight at the Station to again
press the case for a return to high country
grazing. They met with the Victorian Minister
for Environment and Climate Change, the
Hon. Ryan Smith MP and Member of the
Legislative Council, Phillip Davis MP.
CATTLE MAY RETURN TO WONNANGATTA
CONTINUED
The two state Members of Parliament took
the opportunity to tour the Wonnangatta
Valley. They inspected the valley’s open flats
and surrounding dense forest while
considering the growing fuel loads and
potential for bushfire throughout the valley
and the high country beyond.
high country under indigenous land
management and later when in the care of
the cattlemen.”
“If this concept was implemented once
again, Wonnangatta Valley would gradually
become far less prone to intense wildfire and
more attractive to visitors.” Mr Lovick
concluded.
Charlie Lovick told the MP’s that it was a
huge mistake by the former state
government to stop grazing in Wonnangatta.
He pointed out that at the time of the
decision; the MCAV foresaw that the move
would be a disaster for the land.
“Since that decision to stop grazing,
Wonnangatta has grown into a fire trap. The
valley is now tinder dry with metre high grass
and infested with invasive species such as
blackberries, briars and St John’s wort which
adversely affect native plants and local
biodiversity,” Mr Lovick said.
“Any mid-summer fire would burn with such
intensity that everything in the fire’s path
would be destroyed.
“It is the MCAV’s position that the valley, as
previously managed during the heyday of
Wonnangatta Station, should be managed
through a combination of cool burning and
grazing. This combination of activities would
once again bring the valley back to life. This
was the state of the valley and surrounding
ASSOCIATES
PAGE
Without the MCAV Associates, the organisation
wouldn’t have the strength and popularity it
enjoys. From now on the Yarner will showcase
our associates, our hidden treasures.
Spotlight on
CHRIS LEWIS
An Associate member with a passion for
camping, hunting and fishing, CHRIS has
been an Associate member of the
Gippsland branch MCAV for many years.
Chris is currently serving as the Secretary
of the Gippsland Branch of the MCAV.
During the past 5 years Chris has been
part of “The Crew” and he is known as
Scotty’s right hand man. He is always the
one smiling with a can do attitude.
In August this year Chris did a 3 day stint
at the Melbourne 4WD show for the
MCAV. During that time he handed out
over 5000 flyers for the next Get Together
and fielded 1000’s of questions about the
MCAV. That is a mammoth effort.
I asked Scotty Jennison what was the best
thing about having Chris helping out in his
crew at the Get Together – he said his
great humour, great
work and
commitment to
getting everything
right. “I only have to
look and he knows
what has to be done!”
The MCAV can’t
operate without our
fantastic associates
and Chris is one of the
very best.
The 2013 4WD Show - pictured above is Chris (on
left) with Scotty Jennison, John Cook and Nook
Coleman.
Chris lives in Newlands Arm with his wife
Wendy and has two sons Jason and
Michael. When not helping out the
MCAV, Chris works with the CFA as a
Vegetation Management Officer.
At the next Get
Together in January
we will again see Chris
in action – working all
day to make sure the event runs smoothly
and having a couple of celebratory quiet
drinks each evening.
Thanks to Chris from all our MCAV
members, we are proud that you join our
cause and lucky you are a part of what we
do.
