Commemorative Medals
Elizabeth I (1558-1603)
CM001 Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Quits Belgium 1587, cast Bronze Medal, unsigned, bust of Leicester threequarters
facing, in richly decorated tunic, collar and feathered hat, ROBE CO LEIC ET IN BELG GVBER 1587, rev sheep
in flat country, to the right a dog leaves them, INVITVS DESERO, NO GRECEM SED INGRATOS, 41mm (MI i 140/100).
49mm (Eimer 54; MI i 140-100). A little pitting, otherwise good very fine, contemporary and rare. £1,400
Despite tacitly supporting the Dutch for some time Elizabeth had been reluctant to make her involvement official for fear of offending the
Spanish monarchy and risking war. Nevertheless after French and Spanish Catholics joined forces, with the aim of defeating French protestants,
Elizabeth accepted the United Provinces’ offer of sovereignty and appointed Leicester as Governor and Captain General of Holland, Zeeland and
the United Provinces. He was ultimately unsuccessful in this role. Although a prominent businessman he misunderstood the delicate balance
of trade between Dutch and Spanish merchants and, in aligning himself with Calvinists, he alienated himself from the provinces’ majority
moderate Protestants and Catholics alike. At complaints from the states, Elizabeth conferred the command of the armies to Maurice, second
son of the late Prince of Orange, during a period while Leicester was absent. On his return he quit the provinces and distributed these medals.
The dowry that was offered with the hand of Catherine of Braganza was immense. As well as money, international trading rights in the New
World and the strategically positioned port of Tangier, vitally the Portuguese ceded Bombay. It is difficult to overplay the significance of India
to the history of the British Empire and therefore quite prescient that a medal celebrating Britain’s position in the world should have been
struck during this reign.
names of the seven other imprisoned bishops, 50mm (Eimer 288a; MI i 622/37). Good extremely fine with
attractive patina. £350
James II’s Second Declaration of Indulgence was a highly significant element in the delicate balance of religious tolerance in 17th
century Britain. It granted Catholics and non-confirmists freedom to worship at home and in private chapels, repealing laws obliging
conformity to the Church of England. Many Anglicans rejected the declaration on religious and legal grounds as the King was
suspending laws made by parliament. Archbishop Sancroft objected publically along with seven others. They were arrested for sedition
and imprisoned in the Tower, though later acquitted.
The dispute which resulted in the Siege of Gibraltar dates from 1738 and is based on the control of lucrative trading routes to the Americas. At
the outbreak of the American War of Independence Spain and France supplied American rebels with arms to aid their mutual cause - defeating
the British. By 1779 both France and Spain had declared war on Britain and joined forces at the Treaty of Aranjuez. The Rock was besieged in
1779 and after numerous naval engagements around the Iberian coast, several of which are recorded by commemorative medals, it was finally
relieved in 1783.
