Walter L Colls (1860-1942), professional copperplate etcher,<br />

engraver, and printer. Colls issued yearly portfolios of<br />

photogravures on behalf of The Linked Ring between 1895<br />

and 1897. The Brotherhood of the Linked Ring was formed in<br />

1892, the year this medal was awarded, and was one of the first<br />

groups to promote photography as fine art. Two other medals<br />

to Walter Colls appeared in a mixed lot in a recent DNW auction<br />

(13 July 2011, lot 1115), the Putney Photographic Society and<br />

the West London Photographic Society, both 1890. Further<br />
