Thursday, May 1 Harry Spindel Memorial Lectureship “Culture and Barbarism: Nazi Art Plundering and the Restitution Field Moving Forward” Jonathan Petropoulos 7:30 p.m. Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center Jonathan Petropoulos is the John V. Croul Professor of European History at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California. He is the author of Art as Politics in the Third Reich (University of North Carolina Press, 1996), and The Faustian Bargain: The Art World in Nazi Germany (Oxford University Press, 2000), Royals and the Reich: The Princes von Hessen in Nazi Germany (Oxford University Press, 2006), and the forthcoming Artists Under Hitler: The Power of Seduction and the Fate of Modernism in Nazi Germany (Yale University Press, 2014). He has also served as research director for art and cultural property on the Presidential Commission on Holocaust Assets in the United States, where he helped draft the report, Restitution and Plunder: The U.S. and Holocaust Victims’ Assets (2001). Petropoulos has helped organize art exhibitions, such as Degenerate Art: The Fate of the Avant-Garde in Nazi Germany, which opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1991, and he has served as a consultant for a number of Holocaust victims and heirs trying to recover lost artworks, including assisting members of the Bloch- Bauer family as they recovered five paintings by Gustav Klimt in 2006. Thursday and Friday, May 1 and 2 Symposium: “Social Politics and the Cold War” 7:30 p.m., Thursday, keynote address by Dagmar Herzog 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, panels Lancaster Lounge, Moulton Union The year 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the last moments of the Cold War that defined the second half of the 20th century. The “Social Politics and the Cold War” symposium brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to investigate the cultural impacts of superpower rivalry. Rather than focusing exclusively on the political or military aspects of the Cold War, the symposium examines the effects of the bi-polar world on cultural production, women’s issues, health and sexuality, the environment, youth movements, the production of science, and the reshaping of national educational paradigms.
