Purpose<br />

This <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> recognises the skills and knowledge required by the Royal New<br />

Zealand Navy for naval rat<strong>in</strong>gs, and by the survey<strong>in</strong>g profession for survey assistants<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a hydrographic context. It is designed for people who use <strong>in</strong>shore craft and<br />

may also work from coastal survey vessels crewed by others. The holder of this<br />

qualification is able to apply mathematical, communication, and practical survey<strong>in</strong>g skills<br />

for hydrographic survey<strong>in</strong>g under the supervision of a professional surveyor.<br />

All the standards are compulsory. This qualification recognises skills <strong>in</strong> hydrographic<br />

survey<strong>in</strong>g measurement and operations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bathymetric surveys; core knowledge<br />

and skills <strong>in</strong> maritime safety <strong>in</strong> a hydrographic survey<strong>in</strong>g context; and complementary skills<br />

<strong>in</strong> first aid and basic comput<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This certificate shares some standards with the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Maritime<br />

(Commercial Coastal Watchkeep<strong>in</strong>g) [Ref: 0522]. This qualification does not lead on to<br />

any other current NZQF <strong>National</strong> Qualification.<br />

Replacement Information<br />

This qualification replaced the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Survey<strong>in</strong>g (<strong>Hydrographic</strong> Survey<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

(<strong>Level</strong> 5) [Ref: 0463].<br />

Special Notes<br />

Candidates who hold standards 8762 and 8778 as a result of assessment with<strong>in</strong> a<br />

hydrographic context may apply for recognition of current competence for standards 23866<br />

and 23867 respectively. Applications for recognition of current competency, supported by<br />

appropriate documentation, should be made to InfraTra<strong>in</strong> NZ Ltd.<br />

Version 2 was issued follow<strong>in</strong>g a revision.<br />

Changes to structure and content<br />

• Generic comput<strong>in</strong>g standards 2780, 2790, 2791, and expir<strong>in</strong>g 2798 were removed.<br />

• Expir<strong>in</strong>g communication standard 2977 was removed.<br />

• Navigation and seamanship standard 12301 was removed.<br />

• Expir<strong>in</strong>g first aid standards 6400, 6401, and 6402 were replaced by 26551 and 26552.<br />

• The credit, level, and titles of some standards were updated to reflect recent revisions.<br />

• The overall credit total for the qualification decreased from 154 to 129.<br />

Candidates may either complete version 1 of the qualification or transfer to version 2. New<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ees will be enrolled <strong>in</strong> programmes lead<strong>in</strong>g to version 2.<br />

this qualification, people who have ga<strong>in</strong>ed credit for the expir<strong>in</strong>g standards are exempt<br />
