Mayoral Award for Inframax high achiever
Congratulations to Shane Burrett of Inframax Construction Ltd in Te Kuiti, who received
the Waitomo High Achievers Award at the recent Mayoral Graduations for Waitomo
and Otorohanga Districts.
Shane is currently a Quarry Manager at Inframax,
and was previously based in the roading division.
During his time in roading, he completed a National
Certificate in Civil Construction Supervision and
became an InfraTrain Registered Assessor.
The Waitomo High Achievers Award recognises
individuals with an outstanding commitment to
training, and who are well respected in their industry.
Shane was chosen for the Award because of his
motivation and enthusiasm, and willingness to
share his knowledge with others.
Shane said he was “extremely surprised” by his win.
“I had no idea I was going to receive an award –
but it was a real honour.”
He explains, “I’ve been involved
in training young people for
a long time now. Becoming
an InfraTrain Assessor is an
extension of the training, and is
another way to give something
back to the industry.”
Shane continues, “I like to see
people get ahead – especially
young people. Often they just
need some encouragement and
pointing in the right direction to
achieve their goals. Being able to
help them through that process
is very rewarding.”
InfraTrain Regional Advisor
Adrian Gozdz feels that Shane
was a deserving winner of the
Award. He says, “Not only did
Shane work extremely hard on
his own National Certificate, but he is passionate
about helping other people to succeed. It is people
like Shane who are leaving a legacy for the industry,
by passing on their skills to the next generation.”
Adrian continues, “Inframax are very supportive
of industry training, and InfraTrain acknowledges
the encouragement they give to Shane and all of
their other trainees. The company prides itself on
providing opportunities for its employees. The Te Kuiti
branch alone currently has twelve people enrolled in
InfraTrain qualifications, ranging from introductory
skills to supervision, and health and safety to civil
engineering.”
Shane Burrett of Inframax Construction Ltd receives his award from InfraTrain Training Advisor, Adrian Gozdz
Skills for Canterbury
The Built Environment Training Alliance (BETA) has
launched its Skills for Canterbury project, which
aims to ensure there are enough workers sufficiently
trained to support the Christchurch rebuild.
The Alliance, which is made up of eight Industry Training
Organisations (ITOs) including InfraTrain, will work closely
with Government, industry and training providers to meet skill
requirements in the building, construction and infrastructure
industries.
InfraTrain Chief Executive Philip Aldridge says, “The demand
for workers in the region will increase rapidly over the next
twelve months, when the large construction and infrastructure
companies tender for contracts. These companies will need
significantly more workers than they have presently, and many
of the job roles require substantial training, which will delay
the rebuilding process.”
Philip continues, “We need to start training now, to meet
anticipated demand for skilled workers. In the first phase
of the project we will identify workers and employers for
tailored training programmes in the region. This work will be
carried out by a multi-ITO team, including InfraTrain Regional
Manager Fiona Malloch.
InfraTrain is also currently involved in a short term Ministry
of Social Development contract to arrange pre-employment
programmes and place people into work. In the next few
months alone it expects to arrange training for up to 100
people who have been displaced from jobs in other industries
as a result of the earthquake.
Training will be delivered by local providers and will enable
participants to gain essential skills for civil construction work,
such as endorsements for Wheels, Tracks and Rollers, Site Safe
accreditation, and a TC1 Card. On successful completion of the
programme, InfraTrain will assist participants into roles in the
civil construction sector.
The first programmes begin in June, and will be delivered over a
one week period. Programmes covering a more comprehensive
range of skills, lasting two and twelve weeks, are planned by
InfraTrain for later in the year.
If you need new people in Christchurch, or you wish to upskill your existing staff, please contact:
Fiona Malloch, InfraTrain Regional Manager, on 021 844 549 or email: fiona@infratrain.co.nz
Slinging, lifting and placing course
The New Zealand Contractors’ Federation (NZCF)
has created a new course for slinging, lifting and
placing, with the support of InfraTrain.
The course is designed for:
• Operators who are using an excavator for lifting
• Workers engaged in attaching loads, working directly
with suspended loads or acting as dogmen
• Management and supervisory staff responsible for
overseeing these people
The course meets Department of Labour (DoL) compliance
requirements under the revised Crane Code. The Code has
been in place for one year now, and in event of an incident,
DoL will be looking for evidence that operator(s) were suitably trained in slinging, lifting and placing.
The content of the course is aligned to unit standard 20875 – Demonstrate knowledge of slinging, lifting
and placing with an excavator or loader. InfraTrain encourages all participants to get assessed and have
the unit standard registered on their Record of Learning. This will provide formal recognition of their
knowledge.
Courses are being held at locations across the North and South Island throughout June and July. Further
details are available at www.nzcontractors.co.nz
The cost is $165pp + GST for NZCF members, and $265pp + GST for non members, with discounts
available for groups of five or more. Registration of the unit standard is an additional $60pp + GST.
To enrol contact Tricia Sampson, email: tricia@nzcontractors.co.nz, or phone (04) 496 3278.

BULLETIN
Qualifications key to growing skills
Waikato District Council has a clear vision for building its civil engineering capabilities. As part of this vision,
the Council provides opportunities for staff to undertake professional development, with a strong focus on
gaining qualifications and practical skills.
Historically, the Council has had difficulty in recruiting experienced,
qualified engineers. As a result, they have tended to employ people
who are partly-qualified or from non-engineering backgrounds,
and train them in-house. The Council has increased its capability
considerably by using this approach, and has been able to tailor its
training to build the specific skills it requires.
Natalie Mayne is one of many staff who joined the Council at entry
level and has worked their way up. She initially worked part-time
while she completed a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil)
at Wintec, and has progressed to become an Assistant Engineer.
Natalie is based in the Roading Engineering Division. She is
involved in all aspects of roading design, and is the Engineers
Representative for a contract which is valued at around $500,000.
A large part of Natalie’s role involves dealing with different parties
– land owners, power companies and contractors – to make sure
things run smoothly.
Natalie is now working towards a National Diploma in Civil
Engineering (Applied), which builds on the engineering theory
covered in the New Zealand Diploma.
Natalie explains. “The Applied Diploma recognises practical skills,
and is achieved on the job. It covers a wide range of work, so I need
to plan ahead so that I can gain experience in all of the required
areas. If there is something outside the scope of my department,
I’ll arrange a rotation with another area of the Council to get the
experience I need.”
Natalie adds, “I’m hoping to achieve my Applied Diploma within the
next year. This will make me eligible for registration as an Associate
Member of the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand
(IPENZ). Some time in the future I hope to do a Bachelors Degree in
Engineering.”
Engineering Manager Campbell Moore says that the Council places
a particular emphasis on practical, applied skills. “The National
Diploma in Civil Engineering (Applied) is ideal for our staff because
it is flexible and is completed on the job. We try to involve our
staff in a range of interesting projects, and expose them to project
management quite early on so they can gain the broad range of
experience they need to achieve the qualification.”
Campbell adds, “Having staff with the Applied Diploma benefits the
Council because it provides an assurance of quality to our clients.
However, the greatest benefit is to our staff themselves. Knowing
they have that qualification gives a great boost to their confidence,
which benefits them in all areas of their work.”
BULLETIN
Recognising skills at
Multi Civil Contractors Ltd
Congratulations to Jim Ginty, John Maika, Mathew Mua and Mita Henare
InfraTrain Regional
Advisor:
The group gained the qualification
through Recognition of Current
Competency (RCC), which recognises
the existing skills and knowledge of
experienced contractors.
Director Jim Ginty says, “Most of us have
been in the industry a long time, and it
has been useful to get formal recognition
of our skills and knowledge. We are all
Registered Drainlayers, so it made sense to
get a ticket for our pipelaying work too.
Being qualified in both of these areas will
help our company attributes.”
InfraTrain Training Advisor, Red Thompson,
says, “I am delighted that Jim and his team
have achieved their National Certificates.
It was great to be able to offer the RCC
process, and it was the ideal way for them
to be recognised for their skills.
“Jeremy Palmer, the group’s Assessor,
provided guidance which allowed the
group to show their individual skills and
unique experiences in their portfolio of
evidence. They also completed off-job unit
standards for working in confined spaces,
and knowledge of pathogens and disease
control, at Opus International Consultants
in Seaview.
Red adds, “Jim and his team have
worked extremely hard, and InfraTrain
congratulates them on their achievements.
Multi Civil has really embraced RCC, and
another employee is currently working
towards the National Certificate in Civil
Construction Supervision through the
same process.”
