inMotion volunteers transform lives
Orders of protection keep families safe and secure. Battered immigrant women become legal
residents, enabling them to secure good jobs and a full range of benefits for themselves and their
children. And mothers receive the child support they need to provide healthy and nurturing homes.

a definite eye-opener to the inequities of the legal system.”
The vast majority of our clients are victims of domestic violence—and they are poor. Systems that
are meant to protect them and care for their families, including our courts, have failed. 90% of the
women who go to Family Court proceed without an attorney. With alarming frequency, these
women forfeit their legal rights due to lack of representation.
The need is overwhelming
Hard to believe that in a city of 8 million people—with 70,000 attorneys—abused women have to
wait many months, even years, to get free legal help. Lawyers are guaranteed for individuals facing
criminal charges; not so for mothers in Family and Supreme Courts, where most family law issues
are resolved.

InMotion volunteer lawyers are on the front lines working to protect women and their families
before it’s too late. Every day, they go into court and fight for things that matter: protection from
abuse, financial support, and orders granting child custody and divorce that replace fear with
hope. Last year, inMotion volunteers provided free legal services to 3,000 women. We hope we
prevented tragedies. We know we changed lives for good.

LAW FIRM AWARD
Davis Polk & Wardwell, honoring the firm’s unwavering commitment to providing pro bono legal
services to inMotion clients since becoming one of our first Corporate Partners in 1993. Consistently
carrying a substantial number of complex cases, Davis Polk has also provided an invaluable resource to the
New York City legal community by generously hosting more inMotion CLE trainings over the years than any
other firm.
LEGAL TEAM AWARDS
Katerina Abdilova, Deanna Dickerson and Otto Rodriguez—Linklaters, for their
passionate and focused work on a VAWA * case for a client whose mentally
disturbed husband became threatening, violent and extremely abusive.
Led by Deanna Dickerson, the team demonstrated exceptional dedication
to learning and applying the law.They advocated to postpone their client’s
immigration interview so that she could petition under VAWA for legal
residency. As a result of their superb preparation, and in less than
two weeks of filing, the client was able to secure life stabilizing
relief and ongoing interim benefits pending the final outcome of
her VAWA case.The team followed up by providing excellent
representation at her adjustment interview, and their client’s green
card was approved. She is waiting now to receive it, hoping to
return to her home country to visit her ailing mother.
Juan A. Arteaga and Ryan A. Kane—Simpson Thacher
& Bartlett LLP, for their ardent representation of their client, who
feared for her safety and worried that her abusive husband would
separate her from their two-year-old son. After a lengthy and
complicated trial, this mother is now legally protected by multiple
court orders, both civil and criminal.These judgments served as key
support for a VAWA immigration petition. With her safety and
immigration status protected, Juan and Ryan helped her to obtain a
divorce agreement that awarded her custody of her son and child
support. Now able to work as a permanent resident, the client
supports her son and was recently awarded a scholarship for victims
of domestic violence.

Miriam’s Story: A new life begins
Miriam** was feeling threatened by her husband for some time. Things turned for the worse in their
relationship when he started becoming physically violent. Miriam was terrified when he smacked the
telephone out of her hand while she was on a call. She especially did not want to expose her young
children—ages 4 and 6—to these violent outbursts. One night in the midst of an argument, her husband
began choking her, tightening his grip when she pulled away. Miriam managed to
break free from his hold. Determined not to let this happen again, she decided
the next morning to petition for an order of protection. As the violence continued
and her legal proceeding grew more complicated, Miriam realized she could not
handle matters on her own. She needed a lawyer—like the attorney her
husband was able to hire. That day, she reached out to inMotion.
“Miriam was wonderful and her case gave me the
chance to appear in court, something a second-year
associate doesn’t get to do very often.”
Through inMotion, Miriam was introduced to Jonathan Martin, a
volunteer attorney from Davis Polk & Wardwell. Jonathan
successfully obtained an order of protection for Miriam. He then
appeared in court numerous times on her behalf and negotiated
a favorable separation agreement which includes child custody
and support. Miriam is extremely pleased with the outcome of
her case. She now has the framework to begin a new life with
legal custody of her children, support for their welfare and
greater peace of mind.
Jonathan’s work on this case provided him with an
opportunity to use and develop his legal skills while providing real

hope for someone with scarce resources in great need. “Standing in
the courtroom as lead attorney for Miriam,” Jonathan recalls, “I realized how important the outcome

SOLO PRACTITIONER AWARDS
Eugene Chidiebere Anyikwa, for never hesitating to accept last-minute or difficult cases and for his
unfailing devotion to providing the highest level of service for the underrepresented. Eugene accepted a
case over the July 4th weekend, working feverishly to prepare for the client’s court date on July 5th.
Although it was nearly impossible to directly contact the client, who needed an interpreter and was staying
in a shelter closed for the holiday, he was ultimately able to help her obtain full custody of her children and
an order of protection. Always taking on new challenges, Eugene is currently working on an order of
protection case that has developed into a complicated contested divorce.
David Pantaleoni, an active member of inMotion’s Bronx-based pro bono attorney panel since 2002, is
deeply committed to each of his inMotion clients. David has completed several complex custody cases, as
well as a lengthy contested divorce. A dedicated volunteer who never refuses complicated or
time-consuming matters, he continues to ask for new cases.
MENTOR AWARDS
Nancy S. Erickson—Legal Services for New York City/Brooklyn Branch,
for providing helpful insights and going beyond expectations to advise and guide attorneys
on a broad variety of challenging matters. Nancy is a tireless advocate for indigent
domestic violence survivors and an invaluable member of our volunteer panel.
Lynn Neugebauer—Safe Horizon Immigration Law Project,
for her thoughtful, expert guidance and technical assistance on
immigration matters, especially those pertaining to self-petitions by
battered immigrant women under VAWA. In addition to serving as
a mentor, over the past year Lynn co-presented at a VAWA training
and generously agreed to provide a VAWA client with direct

Building a caring community of support for women in crisis.
Protecting families
InMotion provides free legal and social services to low-income women. Most of the women we serve suffer from
domestic violence and many are recent immigrants. We reach women who reside in all five boroughs of New York City.
Nearly half of our clients (48%) live in the Bronx, the poorest urban county in the U.S.; 54% are Latina; and 32%
are African-American.
InMotion’s clients share one problem: they lack the financial resources to retain a skilled lawyer to represent them
in critical areas of the law.
InMotion has built a successful legal assistance program that relies on pro bono volunteers from leading law firms and
private practices. Over 4,000 volunteer attorneys have been trained and taken cases referred by inMotion, producing
successful legal outcomes for thousands of women and their children. Last year, our legal volunteers donated 61,000
hours of their time, services valued at over $15 million.

Satisfy CLE requirements while representing
a woman in domestic crisis
InMotion offers free, CLE-accredited, live trainings throughout
the year in matrimonial, family and immigration law. Training
sessions include a special focus on both the impact of domestic
violence on the lives of survivors and the challenges faced by
immigrants. Training videos are available to individuals who are
not able to attend in person. Examples of trainings offered
throughout the year are:

• Orders of protection, child custody and visitation
• Uncontested divorces
• Litigating divorces with issues

Free Continuing Education Trainings
• VAWA self-petition and battered spouse waiver relief for
immigrant women and their children
Upon completing a training seminar, attorneys commit to taking
a pro bono case, either individually or as part of a team of two or
more lawyers. Our experienced staff attorneys provide intensive
mentoring, as needed. They are on hand throughout every case
to answer questions and review documents. Knowing that
experienced back-up is available at all times has enhanced the
success rates as well as the personal satisfaction enjoyed by our
volunteers. Detailed practice manuals filled with step-by-step
instructions and an extensive library of sample documents are
also provided.
Trainings are scheduled for weekday evenings and are offered in
Manhattan (hosted by mid-town and downtown law firms) and
at the Bronx Supreme Court. Sessions range from two to three
hours depending on the topic, with the number of credits
corresponding accordingly. In addition, inMotion grants one CLE
pro bono credit for every 300 minutes of time spent providing
direct legal representation to an inMotion client, up to a
maximum of six credits per reporting cycle.

several months to a year or more for cases involving multiple, complex issues. Lawyers interested in
developing courtroom skills can represent women in litigated matters: divorces with issues (financial
and/or child-related) in Supreme Court, and orders of protection, custody with visitation and/or child
and spousal support matters in Family Court. These cases often involve motion practice and
extensive discovery. Many cases result in hearings and a few proceed to full trial, requiring witness
preparation, the delivery of oral arguments and the chance to conduct direct and cross examinations.
Attorneys who prefer not to litigate can represent women who are seeking uncontested divorces or
filing immigration petitions for legal residency. These cases develop client interviewing and
document drafting skills. You will become a better lawyer while familiarizing yourself with a new area
of law and practice. Solo and small firm practitioners can immediately transfer these new skills to
developing their practices for paying clients.
Legal assistants serve our clients by participating as a member of a legal team working on a case.
Assignments might include drafting documents, doing legal research and assisting with discovery.
Many legal assistants volunteer to assist with client intake at our monthly clinics in the Bronx.
Other volunteer opportunities
• Law students—serve as interns in our offices (part-time during the school year and full-time in
the summer) or by participating in our Summer Associate Program at a law firm. Under an
Appellate Division practice order granted to inMotion, law students may formally appear in court
when accompanied by an admitted attorney.
• MSW field placements—our social work program recruits students in graduate programs to
assist women with safety, financial and mental health needs.
• Interpreters and translators—a large and growing number of women who seek legal help
from inMotion are not fluent in English. Interpreters are needed to help conduct interviews and
meetings. Some clients have legal and related documents essential to their cases that require
translation and transcription into English.
