AndAds is an English-language collection of advertisements, gossip and information,
distributed free of charge by email in Andorra usually on the 2 nd , 12 th and 22 nd of each month.
CHRISTINE’S RECIPE.
EASTER, APPLE & APRICOT CAKE
Heat oven to 160ºC/140ºC fan/gas 3. Lightly butter and line the base of a deep, round, loose-based 20cm
cake tin, alternatively buy parchment cake liners. Mix the following in a large bowl and beat for 1 min (it’s
quite a loose mixture).
250g self-raising flour,
1 teasp baking powder,
225g caster sugar,
140g melted butter,
2 large eggs, lightly beaten,
½ teasp almond extract,
Gently stir in 225g peeled, cored and finely sliced Bramley apples (340g apples yields 225g prepared),
110g ‘ready- to- eat’ dried apricots, snipped into pieces. Spoon everything into the tin, smooth the top and
sprinkle with 30g flaked almonds.
Bake for 1 ¼ - 1 ½ hrs until golden and firm. Serve warm or cold.
CARISMA NEWS
We are pleased to announce that the CHARITY SHOP, CARISMA is now fully operational supported by
the Comú of La Massana and with help from a group of dedicated volunteers. Do pop in to see us at La
Closeta, first floor, in La Massana. We have clothes and accessories; electrical and electronic goods; bric a
brac; kitchen utensils; curtains and bed linen; items of furniture; and books: fiction and non-fiction, english,
catalan, spanish, french, german, scandinavian, reference and language, and a selection of children´s books.
We will be happy to receive donations of any of the above mentioned items, providing they are clean and in
good condition.
Times of opening: Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm and on Fridays from 5to 8.30 pm.

THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING CHURCH OF ANDORRA, ST GEORGE’S

service, at 11am in the coffee bar of the Rutllan Hotel, La Massana.

ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING after the buffet! The annual meeting is important for the

TIP
The warranty for Casio digital cameras does not include damage to the screen if you drop it
or squeeze it. Fair enough. However, in correspondence they say that it is impossible to
damage the screen except when it is dropped or squeezed. In other words they will never
pay for a damaged screen.

A SCOUT MOVEMENT FOR ANDORRA! (the term now includes Guides.) There are only five
countries in the world without a Scout movement and Andorra is one of them. A dynamic, friendly,
international group is now setting one up and this notice is calling all ex-Scouts or would-be
Scouts. Volunteers aged approx. 25-40 are needed to help with the young people. They will be given
training. More mature people are needed to help with administration and fund-raising. For the first two
categories a good knowledge of Catalan is essential. For the third category you only need generosity and
vision! In the first instance, if interested, please contact Clare on 344 181.
Language holiday in Ireland.
As last year, I am organising a 3-week holiday in Waterford for students wishing to improve their level of English.
Accommodation is with local families and there are daily lessons at the school. A wide variety of activities fill the
afternoons and the weekends. This year there is the added attraction of the Tall Ships Race.
Provisional dates are 29th June to 19th July. Maximum cost is €2950 (everything included). The earlier I book the

Em Sembla:
As predicted in AndAds last issue, the UN has declared a half-war on the Libyan Army. At the
end, it looks as if control will pass to a rag-tag of rebels, from Libya and elsewhere, with arms
supplied by who knows whom. A lengthy, expensive disaster looms.
I have a few boxes of second-hand books that may be of some use to anyone running a book stall etc. They
contain, amongst other subjects, history and english literature and are mostly paperback. Please ring Lynne

ORDINO PARISH CHURCH. Father Juan celebrates Mass in English on the last Saturday
of every month at the Parish Church of Ordino at 11.30 a.m. This month it is on Saturday
26th March, and next month on Saturday 30th April. There is the Sacrament of
Reconciliation before Mass. All are welcome and we have coffee after Mass.

“I thought you might like this headline. You may not know that I am taking a course in Andorran law at the University of
Andorra in Sant Julià. In our third lecture on Andorran private international law, the facts behind the headline were
explained.
“Adoption, breaking the links with the original family, is considered a pagan custom under Sharia law as applied in
Morocco (Koran, sura XXXIII, vv, 4ff).
“On the other hand, the Andorran Law for the Protection of Minors does not allow for long-term fostering; only full
adoption, completely breaking the link with the original family, will do.
“A Moroccan resident of Andorra made an agreement with his sister and her husband that he would be fully
responsible for one of their sons, including bringing him up as a Moslem. The boy would come to live in Andorra
but without breaking the legal link with his parents. A decree approving this arrangement, called a kefala, was issued
by a judge in Morocco. The Andorran court decided that it was valid here because both countries had signed the UN
Treaty on the Rights of the Child.”

We try to organise things with the kids (trips to the park, swimming, activity centres) and things without
the kids (a coffee, meals out - and I'm still working on organising a pub crawl and a trip to the

DON DENIS RESTAURANT has attracted yet more correspondence, mostly good. An example is from Diana
Yeoman:
“I support Tom Rafferty’s recommendation. It’s many years since I’ve been there in the evening, but I go there with
friends at least once a month for lunch. Points in favour are: we are always greeted as friends; someone takes our
coats, hangs them up and gives us a numbered ticket to reclaim them when we leave; the menu of the day is printed
in four languages including English; the waiter who takes the order is always friendly and helpful, though he may not
speak English; they remember which dishes I like and remind me of them; they serve wine by the glass; as a
restaurant it is quieter than many because it has tables in booths; I can’t remember if they play music, but if they do
it’s not obtrusive; the restaurant opens at 12.30 pm; I don’t think it would be possible for someone in a wheelchair, but
I have been there on crutches, and there is a lavatory for disabled people on the ground floor (the other one is about
eight steps up from the bar); I have always found the temperature comfortable, winter and summer. If a friend who
doesn’t know Andorra rings up and says “I’m here, let’s have lunch” I nearly always suggest Don Denis because it is
easy to find and near bus routes and good parking.”
