About The Department
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences plays a unique and distinctive role in an
Institute where the ethos of science and technology prevails. It is believed that engineering and
science are, by their very nature, humanistic and socially derived enterprises. Hence a complete
science and technology education must include liberal arts, economics and social studies core. The
commitment to imparting such a complete education distinguishes I.I.Ts from narrow trade schools.
Such education is "truly practical" and unites application with principle, the technical with the
perceptive and scientific knowledge with human and social understanding.
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences comprises of faculty from 6 disciplines -
Economics, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Sanskrit and Sociology. The Department founded in
1958 has weaved the goals mentioned above into its teaching and research programmes and has
been striving assiduously to achieve them.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at I.I.T. Bombay contributes in both the
undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes of the Institute.
At the post-graduate level, the Department conducts full-fledged M.Phil and Ph.D
programmes.
The Ph.D. programme in the Department is discipline oriented and runs in all the six
disciplines, although there is an emphasis on doing research in interdisciplinary topics.
