Industrial Engineering and Operations
Research (IEOR)
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) at IIT Bombay offers
M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes, and conducts research in an unique and insightful
manner in today's economic and social context. The discipline offers a blend of theory,
modelling and application, drawing from traditional as well as modern areas of
operations research, together with a systems view derived from long-standing
principles of industrial engineering. This approach provides a backdrop for technically
sound decisions at operational and tactical levels and occasionally at the strategic
level, for a variety of organizations. The group is interested in research related to
modelling, quantitative analysis and optimal resource allocation from decision
problems in deterministic and stochastic contexts. Broad areas of application are in
manufacturing systems, supply chains, logistics, transport including railways, finance,
services, infrastructure and other industrial systems; application of quantitative
methods in quality and maintenance management systems; development and
application of decision support, intelligent and knowledge-based systems
Some of the faculty members associated with this programme are:

Prakash G. Awate (Mechanical Engg)
Networks, Knowledge-based Systems.

- Scheduling, Inventories, Neural
N. Hemachandra (IEOR) - Operations Research and its applications to
Supply Chains, Financial Engineering., Logistics and Communication
Networks.

K. S. Mallikarjuna Rao (IEOR)
Mathematical Finance

- Game theory, Control theory,
Vishnu Narayanan (IEOR) - Integer Programming, Convex Optimization
and applications

Narayan Rangaraj (Convenor IEOR) - Optimization and Operations
Research, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Railway Operations,
Transportation.

A. Subash Babu (Mechanical Engg)
Quality Management, Entrepreneurship.

- Manufacturing Systems,
Jayendran Venkateswaran (IEOR) - Modelling & Distributed
Simulation (Discrete-event, System Dynamics), Integrated Supply Chain
Analysis.
The students of IEOR exhibit a healthy mixture of varied backgrounds, such as
mechanical, industrial, electrical, computer science, statistics, operations research
and information technology. The website http://www.ieor.iitb.ac.in/ has details on
the faculty, students, research, teaching, academics, admissions and other activities
of the programme.

Both as part of the Master's and Ph.D. programmes in IEOR, and through
research projects, the following breadth of techniques and application areas are of
interest to the group: Deterministic and Stochastic Modelling, Simulation Modelling
and Analysis, Game theory Large Scale Public Transport Systems Planning, Supply
Chain Management, Financial Engineering and Service Systems, Theory and
Application of Artificial Intelligence-based methods, Industrial Scheduling,
Optimization and Control issues in Manufacturing Systems, Inventory Planning and
Management Systems and Enterprise Productivity Management through the
application of new generation IT tools.
IEOR has been associated with a Cross Disciplinary Research Group on
Stochastic Models. It worked on two main application areas: Communication
Systems (Internet Pricing, etc.) and Financial Engineering (Interest rates, bond prices,
asset allocation, etc.) with tools and techniques from Statistics, Stochastic Models,
Optimization Theory, etc.
An area of applied study in this group is Supply Chain Management (SCM),
specifically OR applications within the framework of SCM. Studies here have looked
at Inventory Management problems, Dynamic Pricing problems, Multimodal transport
and issues in Reverse Logistics. Recent efforts in the areas of contract design, new
product introduction, RFID application to perishable inventory management, demand
sensing and information synchronization effect between multiple echelons, closed
loop supply chain. Efforts are also directed towards development of distributed
simulation environment to enable multi-level distributed models for supply chain
analysis.
IEOR is taking part in an effort to develop and build tools for Transport
Operations Management in a variety of areas: Capacity studies and planning,
timetable construction and fleet management. This effort has included suburban rail
operations (as in Mumbai city) as wells as long distance railway operations. A
simulator for traffic on railway sections has been delivered to the Indian Railways
Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications and a Timetable and Chart
preparation tool has been installed in Western Railways, Mumbai Division. Recent
work has been carried out in inland waterways and multimodal transport.
