Trial Mining – crust vs sulphides<br />
• A trial <strong>mining</strong> program may entail <strong>mining</strong> 1 million<br />
tonnes trialling a 2mtpa <strong>mining</strong> system.<br />
• 1 million tonnes <strong>of</strong> crust covers a surface area <strong>of</strong> 8<br />
square KILOMETRES whereas 1 million tonnes <strong>of</strong><br />
polymetallic sulphides to 20m deep disturbs only<br />
140 METRES square <strong>of</strong> surface area.<br />
• Trial <strong>mining</strong> production should be allowed to be<br />
sold to a processor to determine process<br />
characteristics, recover costs <strong>of</strong> trial <strong>and</strong> ensure<br />
material from trial is not wasted but used by man.
