being brought to me could not be solved with training.

CPT APPLICATION PROCESS
Who May Apply?
Experienced professionals with at least three years of work experience and who
are engaged in performance improvement, training and development, organizational
development, human resource management, instructional design, and other
related fields are encouraged to join our community of CPTs. Also included among
the CPT recipients are professionals from a wide variety of occupations whose
work entails improving the performance of individuals and/or organizations in a
systematic way.

How to Prepare
Because the CPT certification is based on demonstrated, repeatable practice, there are
no educational or testing requirements. ISPI offers a two-day “Preparing for the CPT”
in-person workshop and online webinars that may be helpful as you seek your CPT
credential. Upon request, ISPI can provide in-house, customized CPT programs to assist
individuals and organizations with preparing for the CPT certification. These programs
are optional. A self-assessment guide, samples of approved CPT applications, and other
helpful materials are available at www.ispi.org/cpt.
When to Apply
Applications are reviewed year-round. Depending
on when you submit your application, your threeyear
renewal date will be set for either June 15 or
November 15. Applications are accepted in Dutch,
English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Additional languages may be available on request.
Cost to Apply
ISPI members receive a significant savings on certification at $995; the non-member
fee is $1,195. Re-certification, which occurs every three years, is $175 for members
and $350 for non-members. Membership in ISPI can help you advance your career with
top-notch professional development opportunities that also count toward re-certification
requirements, unparalleled networking and connections, and valuable industry updates
and news. A professional membership is $165 a year for residents of North America or
$195 for those who reside outside North America.
Share Your Accomplishment
Certified Performance Improvement Technologists receive
permission to use the CPT credential and logo, a certificate
appropriate for framing, and listing in ISPI’s exclusive CPT
directory. CPTs also receive invitations to CPT events,
e-newsletter, online community, and a sample press
release with tips for how to share your accomplishment.

The following Performance Improvement
Standards describe how performance
improvement is carried out in practice. The
first four are universal principles, and the
remaining six describe a systematic process.
The standards were developed by a special
30-member taskforce which included
performance improvement professionals
from management, clients, academia, and
internal and external practitioners.
1. Focus on outcomes.
2. Take a systems view.
3. Add value.
4. Work in partnership with clients and
stakeholders.
5. Determine the need or opportunity.
6. Determine the cause and the
performance requirements.
7. Design the solution including
implementation and evaluation.
8. Develop the solution and test its
feasibility.
