ABSTRACT – MEMS & Sensors
Automotive MEMS Market Tracker
Richard Dixon – Principal Analyst, MEMS & Sensors 2012
2011 was the second consecutive “bumper year” for automotive MEMS sensors and
actuators. Polls of the major sensor companies indicated that the market grew by 14.2% in
2011 reaching $2.24 billion. While remarkable by itself, this result builds on the 27.3%
revenue growth in the previous year when the auto industry climbed out of the deep valley
of the recession. By 2016, the market will approach $3.25 billion, up from $2.24 billion in
2011, a CAGR of 7.7%. The market will exceed $3 billion for the first time in 2015.
Compared to 2011, the market in 2012 will stabilize to some extent, and grow by 7.2%.
From 2012 onwards to 2014, the market grows more rapidly in what can be described as the
“fat” years” as vehicle manufacturers hasten to comply with safety legislation for ESC in the
U.S., Europe, Australia, Korea, and Japan; and TPMS in the U.S., Europe, Korea, and
China. In 2013, the sensor market will grow by 9.7% and by 2014 by 13.6% when essentially
all new vehicles will be subject to the mandates needed to comply with regulations.
In 2015 and 2016 the growth rates drop markedly to 4.9% and 3.6%, respectively. The yearon-year
growth rates represent a cause for concern, as they are below those of the average in
the five years prior to the 2008/2009 recession where sensors sales are estimated to have
been running at about 5% to 7%—unless new legislation or applications emerge to bolster
the market. The report thus speculates on some of the applications that could stimulate the
market beyond 2016, e.g. filters for GDI and accelerometers for E-call.
