Asian Inbound Travel Shows Robust Growth
Visitor arrivals at
destinations in Asia
increased by about 9% in
2012. Following are the
latest statistics, based on
calculations by TBA and
sourcing DMOs, Pacific
Asia Travel Association
and the World Tourism
Organization.
Overall growth of inbound
travel for Asia was strong –
an average of 9%. Only two
destinations- Hong Kong
and Macau - counted a fall,
but many others showed
unusually fast growth,
although this is partly due
to a slow 2011.
Mainland China saw an
increase of only 2%, but
because this is the region’s
largest destination, that
represents an additional
500,000 visitors. Thailand,
with a14% share, saw
a rapid increase thanks
to increased traffic from
Russia, which is now the
country’s biggest market in
Europe, overtaking longstanding
markets such
as Germany and the UK.
Singapore features new
attractions including new
theatres at the Marina Bay
Sands, the Marine Life
Park, a cruise terminal and
the Gardens By The Bay
(Singapore’s 2nd botanical
garden).
Malaysia’s 7% share
represents growth of 1%.
Malaysia is hoping for a
boost in 2014 as the DMO
has designated it ‘Visit
Malaysia Year’. Korea’s 7%
share, which translates to
a strong 14% increase in
2012, is primarily because
of good growth in the
Japan outbound market.
The seemingly impressive
35% growth for Japan is
primarily a recovery from
the fall in 2011. That 35%
growth took the total to
just below the 2010 peak.
For Indonesia although
much effort goes into
facilitating and promoting
travel into different parts
of the archipelago, most
of the visitor traffic still
goes into the famed everexpanding
exotic island of
Bali. There is now also an
attempt to spread the Bali
visitor business around the
whole island, rather than
just around Denpasar.
