Regulations of the Helmholtz Research School on Energy-related Catalysis Concerning the Granting<br />
of Scholarships<br />
Article 1 – General<br />
Young scientists writing a PhD thesis in the Helmholtz Research School on Energy-relevant Catalysis at<br />
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (<strong>KIT</strong>) shall be granted scholarships to support scientific advanced training<br />
and independent scientific research as well as participation in conferences and research stays abroad. These<br />
scholarships shall contribute to covering the living expenses and material expenses associated with research,<br />
education, and training activities of the holder.<br />
Article 2 – Application<br />
The spokesman of the Helmholtz Research School shall grant scholarships on request of pre-doctoral students<br />
already accepted by or applying for the Research School. In the latter case, acceptance by the Helmholtz<br />
Research School must have been confirmed. The application for a scholarship shall comprise the<br />
completed form “Antrag auf Erteilung eines Stipendiums” (application for a scholarship). Pre-doctoral students,<br />
who have not yet been accepted, shall additionally submit<br />
a) an application letter of one or two pages referring to the subject of the PhD thesis,<br />
b) a curriculum vitae,<br />
c) a copy of the diploma/master certificate, and<br />
d) a letter of acceptance as a pre-doctoral student by the department.<br />
The scholarship holder shall be obliged to document the knowledge acquired within the framework of the<br />
scholarship or the findings obtained while solving a research task.<br />
This scholarship shall not imply any employment relationship. Scholarship holders shall neither be bound by<br />
instructions nor be obliged to render services in return in the sense of an activity as an employee. Binding<br />
working times may not be specified for them.<br />

Article 3 – Exemption from Taxation<br />
As a rule, the scholarships shall be exempted from taxation according to Article 3, No. 44, EStG (status of<br />
April 08, 2010).<br />
Exemption from taxation according to the Income Tax Act shall imply<br />
a) that the scholarships do not exceed the amount required for fulfilling the research task or for covering the<br />
living expenses and training needs and are awarded according to regulations adopted by the grantor,<br />
b) that the recipient shall not be obliged to render a certain scientific or artistic service in return or to work<br />
as an employee in connection with the scholarship granted to him/her.<br />
Article 4 – Amount of the Scholarship<br />
The amount of the scholarship shall be specified by the spokesman of the Research School in agreement<br />
with the school council. The valid graduate funding rates of DFG shall not be exceeded. The maximum scholarship<br />
amount shall be EUR 1300 per month. Family, children, child care allowances/costs etc. shall not be<br />
paid.<br />
Services and contributions other than the scholarship granted (e.g. social insurance fees, health insurance<br />
fees, etc.) shall not be paid. Scholarship holders are recommended to conclude health, accident, third-party<br />
liability, and life insurance contracts in their own interest. These insurance fees shall not be taken over by the<br />
Research School.<br />
Article 5 – Duration of the Scholarship<br />
The scholarship shall be granted first for one year at the maximum. Prolongations shall be possible. Total<br />
scholarship duration shall not exceed three years.<br />
Article 6 – Social Insurance Obligation<br />
A scholarship shall not be considered any remuneration in the sense of Article 14, Social Code. Acceptance<br />
of the scholarship shall not oblige the scholarship holder to work as an employee of Karlsruhe Institute of<br />
Technology. The scholarship shall be exempted from social insurance.<br />
Article 7 – Obligation to Register<br />
Foreign scholarship holders shall be obliged to register with the responsible registration office or aliens’<br />
authority.
Article 8 – Revocation, Claim for Return of the Scholarship<br />
The Helmholtz Research School shall reserve the right to revoke its approval completely or partly and to<br />
claim return of the scholarship, if<br />
• the purpose of the scholarship has been reached,<br />
• major reasons exist, in particular, if the purpose of the scholarship noticeably cannot be fulfilled, because<br />
own scientific efforts of the holder are not sufficient for reaching the research objective and<br />
the scholarship holder does not use his/her best and reasonable endeavors,<br />
• the approval has been based on incorrect or incomplete data,<br />
• requirements made have not been fulfilled within the deadline specified,<br />
• the funds have not been used according to their purpose, or<br />
• an occupation is pursued with more than 20 working hours per week.<br />
Article 9 – Entry into Force<br />
These regulations shall enter into force on October 01, 2010.<br />
