Synthesis and prelim<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
analysis <strong>of</strong> the studies carried out<br />
<strong>in</strong> the framework <strong>of</strong> the srpoa-<strong>shark</strong>s<br />
project<br />
Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>Shark</strong> fisheries<br />
<strong>in</strong> the sub-region<br />
1. Participants <strong>of</strong> the <strong>shark</strong> <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> the sub-region<br />
Studies <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Shark</strong> <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />
completed with<strong>in</strong> the framework <strong>of</strong><br />
the SRPOA-<strong>Shark</strong>s Project, showed<br />
that <strong>Shark</strong>s are caught, processed and<br />
sold by relatively specialised economic<br />
agents. In the SRFC zone, except <strong>in</strong> some<br />
rare cases, this means <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> boat owners,<br />
fishermen, fish processors, middlemen<br />
who assemble the products (particularly<br />
<strong>shark</strong> f<strong>in</strong>s), and the exporter-brokers <strong>of</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>ished products.<br />
In the sub-region, <strong>Shark</strong>s are targeted by<br />
artisanal fishermen. <strong>Shark</strong> <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is practiced<br />
by several communities <strong>of</strong> fishermen<br />
(Guet-Ndariens, Lébous and Nyom<strong>in</strong>kas<br />
<strong>in</strong> Senegal, the Imragens <strong>in</strong> Mauritania,<br />
and Ghanaians <strong>in</strong> other countries) us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more than twenty <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> techniques and<br />
strategies that vary accord<strong>in</strong>g to the seasons<br />
and biological and socio-economic<br />
factors. It is the Ghanaian community that<br />
greatly contributed to the development <strong>of</strong><br />
selachian fisheries <strong>in</strong> the SRFC countries,<br />
first for the consumption <strong>of</strong> <strong>Shark</strong> meat <strong>in</strong><br />
West Africa, then for the consumption <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>shark</strong> f<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Asia.
