NURSING PROGRAMS<br />

• <strong>IVCC</strong> offers an Associates degree in <strong>Nursing</strong> (RN) and<br />

a Certificate in Licensed Practical <strong>Nursing</strong> (LPN)<br />

• Both programs are limited admission and very<br />

competitive. Students who have the minimum<br />

requirements for admission are not guaranteed<br />

admission<br />

• For the Fall of 2014, we are admitting 80 students. The<br />

total number of RN and LPN students for Fall 2014 is<br />

subject to departmental review. We currently accept 60<br />

RN’s and 20 LPN’s


TIMELINE—FALL 2014<br />

• Letter of intent:<br />

• November 15, 2013 – February 15, 2014<br />

• Documents due:<br />

• March 17, 2014<br />

• Pre‐nursing assessment:<br />

• April 2014<br />

• Notification:<br />

• May 2014(after final grades posted for spring)<br />

• Registration<br />

• June 2014


DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED<br />

The following documents must be received by the Office of<br />

<strong>Admission</strong>s and Records prior to the posted deadline:<br />

Official High School Transcripts<br />

Official GED Scores (if applicable)<br />

Official College Transcripts from all institutions attended<br />

(<strong>IVCC</strong> request for evaluation of transcripts form completed)<br />

Placement Test Completion<br />

Certified Nurses Aid (CNA) Proof of Certification or<br />

Enrollment in ALH1214 or ALH1215


PROOF OF RESIDENCY<br />

• Students must provide proof of residency as part of<br />

their file completion<br />

• Students should be able to provide one or more of the<br />

following:<br />

• Voter registration in District 513 53<br />

• Evidence of tax, utility or rent receipts in District 513<br />

• Driver's license and/or vehicle registration showing an address in District<br />

513 53<br />

• Other documents which can help verify residency in District 513<br />

• A student who resides with his or her parents or guardian in Community<br />

College District 513 is a resident student.


RESIDENCY<br />

• Preference is given to those applicants who are legal<br />

residents of <strong>IVCC</strong> district #513<br />

• Due to the competitiveness of the nursing program, we<br />

have not been able to admit out‐of‐district applicants<br />

in recent years<br />

• Residency is defined as living in <strong>IVCC</strong>’s district #513<br />

for 30 days prior to submitting your Letter of Intent<br />

• Dual admissions agreements do not imply residency<br />

for limited admissions programs<br />

• If a student works full time at an in‐district health care<br />

provider, they will be considered district residents


SELECTING A PROGRAM<br />

Students will be allowed to apply for both the RN and the LPN<br />

programs and indicate a preference<br />

If you are unsure, ask yourself which program you would<br />

choose if you were accepted to both!<br />

Students should discuss their options with a Counselor<br />

LPN students who wish to return as RN’s for Advanced<br />

Placement must meet the following criteria:<br />

Employment for a minimum of one year<br />

All RN general education courses complete<br />

In good standing with the college and the RN program<br />

COMPLETION POINTS<br />

For both RN and LPN programs:<br />

‣ Students will receive 4 points for each of the following<br />

classes completed at the time of evaluation: BIO 1007,<br />

BIO 1008, BIO 1009, ALH 1000 and ALH 1002<br />

‣ A Minimum grade of C required<br />

‣ Courses must have been completed less than 7 years<br />

from the time of evaluation (Spring 2007 or later for<br />

Fall 2014 admission cycle)<br />

‣ If a student has repeated the course, the highest letter<br />

grade will be used in the calculation of the nursing<br />

formula score total<br />

Maximum 20 points<br />

CORE COURSE GRADE POINTS<br />

For both RN and LPN programs:<br />

‣ Grade points for: BIO 1007, BIO 1008 and BIO 1009,<br />

ALH 1000 and ALH 1002 divided by 2.5<br />

‣ A Minimum grade of C required<br />

‣ Courses must have been completed less than 7 years<br />

from the time of evaluation (Spring 2007 or later for<br />

Fall 2014 admission cycle)<br />

‣ If a student has repeated the course, the highest letter<br />

grade will be used in the calculation l of the nursing<br />

formula score total<br />

PRE‐NURSING ASSESSMENT EXAM<br />

Students will take a pre‐nursing entrance exam ‐ Fall<br />

2014— Health Education Services, Inc. (A2 HESI Exam)<br />

All students will take the exam in April in the <strong>IVCC</strong><br />

Assessment Center on the Main Campus<br />

Students must pay the cashier for the test in March before<br />

they will be able to take the test t (estimated t cost of $32)<br />

The A2 HESI is a standardized test based on content area<br />

scored in grammar, vocabulary, anatomy, math, and<br />

reading comprehension<br />

The A2 HESI test may be taken only one time per year<br />

STANDBY LIST<br />

Students who apply and who meet the minimum requirements<br />

but are not admitted are added to a Standby List<br />

If an opening occurs, students are offered admission to the<br />

program based on their Standby List number<br />

If you apply for both the RN and the LPN programs and you are<br />

admitted to the program that is not your preference, you will be<br />

placed on the Standby List for your preferred program<br />

Standby lists do not carry over from year to year


ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK<br />

“The Gen Eds”<br />

Students also must complete certain general education courses<br />

as part of the degree (RN) or certificate program (LPN)<br />

It is highly recommended that these be completed before<br />

beginning the program to maximize performance<br />

A minimum grade of “C” is required for:<br />

RN ‐ ENG 1001, ENG 1002, PSY 1000, SOC 1000<br />

LPN ‐ ENG 1001 and PSY 1000<br />

• ALH 1001, SFC 1000, and BIO 1200 are strongly recommended<br />

Students who fail to complete all the general education courses<br />

by the point of graduation will not be allowed to take the<br />

National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX) or graduate<br />

with their class


PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS<br />

• Placement testing is required in English, Reading<br />

and Mathematics (unless you have completed the<br />

appropriate courses at <strong>IVCC</strong> or another college or<br />

university and transferred the credit to <strong>IVCC</strong>)<br />

• Information on placement testing can be found at<br />

www.ivcc.edu/assessment or 815.224.0542<br />

• All students must complete up to and including or<br />

test t out of the following coursework: MTH 0900,<br />

RED 1008, ENG 0900 and/or ENG0909<br />

• Initial Placement testing is free. There is a nominal<br />

cost to re‐take any portion of the test


Certified Nurses Aide<br />

CNA COMPLETION<br />

• Proof of current IL certification is required<br />

• The CNA class ‐ ALH 1214 must be completed by Spring<br />

semester prior to first nursing course<br />

• Students must test out of <strong>IVCC</strong>’s RED0800 or earn an<br />

ACT subscore of 18 in Reading to enroll in ALH1214<br />

active or inactive


CNA COMPLETION<br />

• If your CNA certification is older than three years at the time of<br />

evaluation, proof of hours worked (1020) during last three years<br />

must be submitted<br />

• Hours must be documented d from employer<br />

• Students who have not worked 1020 hours in the last three years<br />

and are listed on the CNA registry can take the CNA refresher<br />

course (ALH 1215 must be completed by Spring semester<br />

prior to first nursing course)<br />

• Students who have not worked 1020 hours in the last 3 years and<br />

are not located on the CNA registry must retake the CNA course<br />

(ALH 1214)<br />

• Hours must verify performance of 21 basic CNA skills. CNA’s CNAs in<br />

nursing homes and hospitals traditionally meet this<br />

requirement. Home care and doctor’s offices traditionally do not


DRUG TESTING/CRIMINAL<br />

BACKGROUND CHECK<br />

All admitted students will be required to pass a<br />

drug test and a criminal background check<br />

Failure to undergo or pass the drug test and the<br />

criminal background check will result in<br />

dismissal from the program<br />

Students are responsible for paying the fees for<br />
