DEGREES & MAJORS<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> in Composition<br />

Places strong emphasis on private composition study as well as on o<strong>the</strong>r areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> critical importance to composers: applied instrumental and vocal instruction,<br />

music history, <strong>the</strong>ory, conducting, and music technology/computer music.<br />

This program is aimed at developing young composers’ aes<strong>the</strong>tic sensitivities,<br />

practical skills and inner ears in ways that will make it possible for <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

create music <strong>of</strong> significance and meaning.<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Education (Vocal and/or Instrumental)<br />

Is a 4-year program that prepares students to teach in public <strong>school</strong>s through<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional course work and through observation and participation in a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> public <strong>school</strong> settings. A full semester <strong>of</strong> supervised teaching in<br />

both elementary and secondary <strong>school</strong>s is a feature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> senior year. Because<br />

<strong>Illinois</strong> has one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> more rigorous certification programs, many o<strong>the</strong>r states<br />

grant certification immediately.<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> in Performance<br />

Is designed for students committed to <strong>the</strong> achievement <strong>of</strong> excellence in <strong>the</strong><br />

field <strong>of</strong> performance. Students pursue this program in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following<br />

performance areas: percussion, piano, strings, voice, or winds. This degree<br />

program also includes extensive studies in music literature, pedagogical techniques,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ory.<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts in <strong>Music</strong><br />

Is for students who wish to complete a general study <strong>of</strong> music within a liberal<br />

arts curriculum. Course work and experiences are designed to provide opportunities<br />

for students to develop basic musicianship skills, performance skills,<br />

and to engage in a broad study <strong>of</strong> musical repertoire. This is <strong>the</strong> program<br />

recommended for students who wish to double major.<br />
