Jazz Ensemble (top, left)<br />

Since 1972, <strong>the</strong> Jazz Ensemble has performed concerts<br />

nationally and internationally. The Jazz Ensemble is<br />

open to all students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by audition. Liberal<br />

arts students are encouraged to play side by side with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir music major peers. The emphasis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ensemble<br />

is to develop skills that make a student competitive in<br />

<strong>the</strong> jazz/commercial playing field, as well as competent<br />

in conducting ensembles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own. Literature for <strong>the</strong><br />

ensemble includes a wide array <strong>of</strong> styles from traditional<br />

and modern jazz, progressive rock, Latin, and beyond!<br />

Jazz Lab<br />

This ensemble is available to all students without an<br />

audition. Secondary instruments are encouraged in <strong>the</strong><br />

band, and all music education majors are encouraged to<br />

participate to gain jazz experience.<br />

Jazz Combos<br />

With an emphasis on improvisation and small group<br />

interaction, IWU’s Jazz Combos perform jazz standards<br />

as well as arrangements and original compositions by<br />

combo members. The top combo, Active Ingredient,<br />

plays extensively on campus and in <strong>the</strong> Bloomington-<br />

Normal area.<br />

Titan Band<br />

The <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>Wesleyan</strong> Titan Band provides music and entertainment<br />

on campus at <strong>the</strong> football and basketball games. The<br />

band has had <strong>the</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> performing at <strong>the</strong> NCAA Division<br />

III Final Four basketball tournament at IWU’s Shirk Athletic<br />

Center, as well as traveling to Salem, Va. and Hope, Mi. to<br />

play at <strong>the</strong> NCAA Final Four tournaments. The band consists<br />

<strong>of</strong> approximately 85 students from all majors. This ensemble<br />

is open to any student; no audition is required. The Titan<br />

Band plays about 80 charts and performs for approximately<br />

40,000 people per season.<br />

Student-led Groups<br />

Students are encouraged to participate in or to form <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own group in coordination with music faculty, who serve as<br />

advisors. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se groups perform at <strong>school</strong>-sponsored<br />

events locally and statewide.<br />
