High Performance Expansion Joint Technology
Comflex ® Gas Turbine Expansion Joints
Introduction
Gas turbine expansion joints are designed to accommodate
thermal movements and vibration without imposing any loads
on the connected components.
This is achieved by the use of a flexible element capable of
withstanding the high temperature and pressure fluctuations
encountered, yet able to be compressed or stretched without
allowing the gas to escape.
Because expansion joints are critical components, with any
failure leading to downtime of the plant, it is essential to choose
components of the highest quality and reliability.
James Walker Group
The James Walker Group — of which James Walker Townson
is a member — is a global manufacturing group. It has over 50
production, engineering, distribution and customer support
sites across Europe, Australasia, Asia Pacific, Africa and the
Americas.
A close-knit network of Group companies and official
distributors provides products and services to customers in well
over 100 countries.
Comflex ® gas turbine expansion joints offer outstanding
reliability, with extended guarantees, coupled with unsurpassed
customer service. They are available in a wide range of
configurations to suit all applications, no matter how
demanding.
James Walker Townson
James Walker Townson is one of Europe’s leading specialists
in the design, manufacture and installation of flexible expansion
joints and bellows.
Hot to hot configuration
Hot to cold configuration
Used when the ducting is externally insulated. This basic gas
turbine configuration will accommodate both axial and lateral
movements. The flexible element is designed to withstand the
full gas temperature even though the full cavity insulation pillow
offers additional thermal protection. Ideal configuration for small
size applications or when the system is being run continually.
Cold to cold configuration
A combination of the hot and cold configurations, this is used
when the design of the ducting insulation changes from being
external to internal. Precautions are taken to prevent the height
of the up-stand on the hot side being of a height that will cause
temperature differentials and cracking.
Hot to cold stepped flange configuration
A configuration that accommodates thermal movements in
internally insulated ductwork.
Usually the movements are small as the ducting and expansion
joint operate at a low design temperature. Additional
mechanical protection is built into the insulation pillow to
prevent material loss as a result of extremely high gas
velocities.
This design is incorporated in large circular ducting systems
that have a high cyclic life requirement. Finite element
calculations and on-site experience ensure that the stepped
flange design provides an extended life expectancy. Ideal for
large thermal and cyclic movement requirements on circular
ducting systems.
Double pantograph configuration
Finned configuration
This joint is designed for extreme movement conditions. Both
joints operate simultaneously with minimal stress under the
control of the pantograph mechanism. The insulation pillows
and mounting flanges are also designed for high cyclic life
requirements.
Available in hot to hot, cold to cold and hot to cold
arrangements, this is the ultimate expansion joint assembly for
cyclic life requirements. The frames are designed to run hot to
prevent differential thermal expansion and stress cracking.
The heat is taken away from the flexible element by carefully
designed insulation components in the flange area and cooling
fins.
The flexible element itself accommodates axial and lateral
thermal movements with minimal stress and provides years of
trouble free service.
Unsurpassed customer service
James Walker Townson’s expertise in the manufacture of
flexible expansion joints is matched by its excellent and
comprehensive customer service. Ranging from site surveys
and thermographic reports through to problem solving and
maintenance partnerships, it helps ensure years of trouble free
service for expansion joints.
The company’s turnkey installation package starts with a site
survey to assess existing joints, followed by a full technical
report on their condition and the reasons for any existing
problems. Incorrect installation of joints is commonly the cause
of premature failure, and is often difficult to detect once the
joint has been in service for some time.
Services offered
• Site surveys
• Thermographic reports
• Local fitters
• Turnkey installation package
• Free consultancy
• Problem solving
• Reduced installation times
• Maintenance partnerships
• Total responsibility for ALL expansion joints.
After designing an optimum solution for future operation,
James Walker Townson will remove your existing joints and
install the new ones. To complete the process, service
inspections will be carried out after the joint has been running
for a number of months.
Technical advice
James Walker Townson gas turbine expansion joints are
individually designed to the customer’s particular application.
A consultation service is provided, offering technical advice and
ensuring the optimum design for the application.
Finite element calculations are used to determine the most
effective configuration for the steel frames that support the
expansion joints.
Special designs can be produced for problem applications.
Health warning: If PTFE or fluoroelastomer (eg, FKM, FFKM, FEPM) products are heated to elevated temperatures, fumes will be produced which may give
unpleasant effects, if inhaled. Whilst some fumes are emitted below 250°C from fluoroelastomers or below 300°C from PTFE, the effect at these temperatures is
negligible. Care should be taken to avoid contaminating tobacco with particles of PTFE or fluoroelastomer, or with PTFE dispersion, which may remain on hands or
clothing. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available on request.
