ø Over the past couple of years, several large modern sawmills have been built
in Russia. These new plants are now starting up in the short term. Their total
annual capacity amounts to 3 million cubic metres of logs. Having participated
in more than half of those projects, Jartek has gained wide-ranging experience
in constructing new sawmills. This experience is of great importance to us. The
new sawmills are built in the places with a good availability of raw materials
and proper logistics. But due to the lack of their experience in this industry,
the entire local staff must be trained during installation and commission. This
provides a significant challenge in order to successfully implement a project.
Despite the current troubles of the financial market,
we at Jartek strongly believe in the recovery of the
market. Consequently we are developing our future
supply increasingly towards comprehensive deliveries
that cover the complete project.
The situation in the Russian sawmill industry offers further challenges to
overcome. The machinery of old conventional sawmills is becoming obsolete, with
this old equipment resulting in poor productivity. In many plants, the annual output
per worker might remain even less than 300 m3 of sawn timber, whilst the
same indicator in most of the state-of-the-art Finnish sawmills is generally more
than 3.000 m3. This reduces profitability and impedes significantly upon the financing
of new investments. Moreover, the forests in the vicinity of the old sawmills
have been felled, with the longer distances in transporting raw timber bringing
about extra costs.
In Russia, the building stock is growing old and with rising living standards
people’s needs have risen as well. Therefore, the development of the Russian
economy will enable the domestic consumption of sawn timber to turn into a
strong growth. Elsewhere in Europe, the consumption of sawn timber is also
growing. Being the most ecological of building materials, wood is gaining ground
over other materials. In Europe, the availability of this raw material is on the
decrease. Consequently, the demand for Russian sawn timber will be increasing
in the time to come.
In brief, a great deal of new sawmills will be established in Russia in the coming
decade. Jartek has accumulated considerable experience in this line of
work – do not hesitate to utilize it in your future projects. We are at your disposal
anytime.
Log sorting and
infeeding to saw
ø As a new line of business, we have
initiated the handling of round timber.
Now our range includes log sorting
and infeeding to saw. We offer a
product family with a minor capacity
and a powerful heavy-duty series capable
of handling even up to a million
cubic metres of logs per year. In
connection with this, we have developed
the Transverse Log Feeder TLF,
as a replacement for the conventional
step feeder. This equipment is able to
handle up to 40 – 50 logs per minute.
The first deliveries are currently being
installed in the Komi Republic. The delivery
consists of a sorter with 24 bins
and infeeding to saw.
Reorganization of
timber dryer market
The timber drying facilities have al-
Fairs and events:
ways represented an essential part
of Jartek’s deliveries – as well as our
predecessor, Sateko’s. The changes
in the market situation make us recognize
more opportunities, particularly
in the channel drying market.
Some months ago, our competitor
Valutec acquired our other competitor
WSAB. Consequently, there are
only two notable providers of channel
dryers in the market. Therefore,
we are going to invest in the product
development of channel dryers and to
boost their sales and marketing.
Automation
ø At present, as the rate of machinery
automation perpetually increases,
we are continuously developing our
professional know-how. By effectively
advancing the automation, we will
strengthen our competence in sorting
plants, in handling of round timber and
in the automation of timber dryers.
