ø Over the past couple of years, several large modern sawmills have been built<br />

in Russia. These new plants are now starting up in the short term. Their total<br />

annual capacity amounts to 3 million cubic metres of logs. Having participated<br />

in more than half of those projects, <strong>Jartek</strong> has gained wide-ranging experience<br />

in constructing new sawmills. This experience is of great importance to us. The<br />

new sawmills are built in the places with a good availability of raw materials<br />

and proper logistics. But due to the lack of their experience in this industry,<br />

the entire local staff must be trained during installation and commission. This<br />

provides a significant challenge in order to successfully implement a project.<br />

Despite the current troubles of the financial market,<br />

we at <strong>Jartek</strong> strongly believe in the recovery of the<br />

market. Consequently we are developing our future<br />

supply increasingly towards comprehensive deliveries<br />

that cover the complete project.<br />

The situation in the Russian sawmill industry offers further challenges to<br />

overcome. The machinery of old conventional sawmills is becoming obsolete, with<br />

this old equipment resulting in poor productivity. In many plants, the annual output<br />

per worker might remain even less than 300 m3 of sawn timber, whilst the<br />

same indicator in most of the state-of-the-art Finnish sawmills is generally more<br />

than 3.000 m3. This reduces profitability and impedes significantly upon the financing<br />

of new investments. Moreover, the forests in the vicinity of the old sawmills<br />

have been felled, with the longer distances in transporting raw timber bringing<br />

about extra costs.<br />

In Russia, the building stock is growing old and with rising living standards<br />

people’s needs have risen as well. Therefore, the development of the Russian<br />

economy will enable the domestic consumption of sawn timber to turn into a<br />

strong growth. Elsewhere in Europe, the consumption of sawn timber is also<br />

growing. Being the most ecological of building materials, wood is gaining ground<br />

over other materials. In Europe, the availability of this raw material is on the<br />

decrease. Consequently, the demand for Russian sawn timber will be increasing<br />

in the time to come.<br />

In brief, a great deal of new sawmills will be established in Russia in the coming<br />

decade. <strong>Jartek</strong> has accumulated considerable experience in this line of<br />

work – do not hesitate to utilize it in your future projects. We are at your disposal<br />

Log sorting and<br />

infeeding to saw<br />

ø As a new line of business, we have<br />

initiated the handling of round timber.<br />

Now our range includes log sorting<br />

and infeeding to saw. We offer a<br />

product family with a minor capacity<br />

and a powerful heavy-duty series capable<br />

of handling even up to a million<br />

cubic metres of logs per year. In<br />

connection with this, we have developed<br />

the Transverse Log Feeder TLF,<br />

as a replacement for the conventional<br />

step feeder. This equipment is able to<br />

handle up to 40 – 50 logs per minute.<br />

The first deliveries are currently being<br />

installed in the Komi Republic. The delivery<br />

consists of a sorter with 24 bins<br />

and infeeding to saw.<br />

Reorganization of<br />

timber dryer market<br />

The timber drying facilities have al-<br />

ways represented an essential part<br />

of <strong>Jartek</strong>’s deliveries – as well as our<br />

predecessor, Sateko’s. The changes<br />

in the market situation make us recognize<br />

more opportunities, particularly<br />

in the channel drying market.<br />

Some months ago, our competitor<br />

Valutec acquired our other competitor<br />

WSAB. Consequently, there are<br />

only two notable providers of channel<br />

dryers in the market. Therefore,<br />

we are going to invest in the product<br />

development of channel dryers and to<br />

boost their sales and marketing.<br />

Automation<br />

ø At present, as the rate of machinery<br />

automation perpetually increases,<br />

we are continuously developing our<br />

professional know-how. By effectively<br />

advancing the automation, we will<br />

strengthen our competence in sorting<br />

plants, in handling of round timber and<br />

in the automation of timber dryers.<br />

Year 2009 were very difficult in the market of timber drying. Domestic sales in Finland<br />

ground to a halt. Russia had also encountered similar problems, with nothing of note<br />

happening there at the beginning of year 2009.<br />

ø Now, after a long quiet period, inquiries<br />

are evidently increasing both<br />

in Finland and in Russia. With plenty<br />

of offers made, we are expecting to<br />

conclude new deals at the beginning<br />

of this year.<br />

In the late summer we concluded a<br />

big new deal. Eight two-stage drive-through<br />

chamber dryers complete<br />

with the buildings will be delivered<br />

to the Komi Republic. The foundations<br />

are under construction now and the<br />

goods have been shipped around the<br />

turn of the year. The plant shall be<br />

completed by spring<br />

We once again delivered three new<br />

chamber dryers on turnkey basis<br />

to the factory of Karelia Upofloor<br />

(Focus Wood) in Russia. We<br />

concluded also a new deal at the end<br />

of the year 2009. The deal consists<br />

of nine chamber dryers. The heating<br />

plant of the Heinola factory will be<br />

moved there also, with <strong>Jartek</strong> taking<br />

care of whole move.<br />

The installation work at the factory<br />

of Trans-Sibirskaja Lesnaja Kompanija<br />

is going along well. In January<br />

2009, the installations were commenced<br />

in rather chilly weather conditions<br />

which, however, did not disturb<br />

the local assembling staff. Whilst thirty<br />

chambers are almost complete, but<br />

due to local difficulties the client has<br />

been forced to postpone the commissioning<br />

until spring.<br />

A Moscow-based group of investors placed an order from us for a sawmill to be delivered<br />

to the Komi Republic, Russia. The final destination is the village of Kazluk situated<br />

approximately 100 km north-west from the city of Syktyvkar. The project is named<br />

Sawmill Number 1. There were several international enterprises competing for this<br />

project, resulting in a long and tough bargaining process. For <strong>Jartek</strong>, the most important<br />

reasons in clinching the deal included earlier successful performance in Russia,<br />

cost-efficient solutions at the first stage and a lucrative prospect to double the production<br />

quite easily in future.<br />

At the first stage, the annual output of<br />

sawmill will be almost 100.000 m3 of<br />

sawn timber, but the production might<br />

be doubled within 2 years. Furthermore,<br />

the client is planning to invest in<br />

further processing and <strong>Jartek</strong> has<br />

already made some plans regarding<br />

this project. The concept seems to be<br />

highly reasonable; the minor investments<br />

enable the completion of basic<br />

operations first, i.e. timber handling,<br />

production and sales of sawn timber. In<br />

future, when everything is working, the<br />

capacity will be increased in all sectors.<br />

well as conveyors for bark, saw dust and chippings.<br />

second stage, followed by a separate dry sorting.<br />

Initiated at the beginning of last year,<br />

the project is proceeding at a brisk pace<br />

now. The final green light given in<br />

the spring 2009 boosted the project<br />

to an incredible speed. The excavation<br />

work commenced in June and the site<br />

was rather ready for receiving the machinery<br />

in October. The installation of<br />

the first equipment will start in January<br />

and all installation work will be finished<br />

in April. Then the plant is ready<br />

for sawing. The schedule of the project<br />

is extremely ambitious and the client<br />

has been fortunate to find out very appropriate<br />

partners for implementing<br />

the project. Up to now everything has<br />

run according to schedule and without<br />

any delays. We dare say that there will<br />

be plenty of talk about this successful<br />

project for a long time to come!<br />

Current report on thermal<br />

modification plants<br />

The thermal modification of wood by Thermowood technology still shows increasing<br />

interest, with <strong>Jartek</strong> concluding new supply contracts. At the same time, in cooperation<br />

with our customers, we are continuing with the research and development of utilizing<br />

this technology to new wood species and new market areas.<br />

Bois Durables de<br />

Bourgogne, France<br />

ø In France, the thermal modification<br />

plant supplied by <strong>Jartek</strong> was started<br />

up in early autumn 2009 – <strong>Jartek</strong>’s<br />

first project in France. The delivery<br />

consisted of a thermal modification<br />

chamber of 20 m3, a thermal oil boiler<br />

plant and a test chamber. Located<br />

in the province of Burgundy, Bois<br />

Durables de Bourgogne’s plants treat<br />

species such as ash, oak, beech and<br />

also local soft wood to some extent.<br />

Founded by the well known local wood<br />

processing companies, this new company<br />

supplies the owner companies<br />

with its products and also other wood<br />

processing companies with its services.<br />

This was a real ‘Green Field Project’;<br />

the plant is situated in the green<br />

countryside and a year ago this area<br />

was grazed by cows.<br />

SWM-Wood Oy, Finland<br />

ø In Mikkeli, SWM-Wood Oy is about<br />

to complete its annual investments.<br />

The 50 m3 Thermowood thermal modification<br />

chamber was taken into use<br />

in early October and the sticking and<br />

packaging plants are being completed<br />

soon.<br />

During the project, the existing thermal<br />

modification capacity was used<br />

whilst building the new plant continued.<br />

The constructional work involved<br />

in the machinery investments was<br />

the greatest challenge for us.<br />

Located in Pursiala of Mikkeli, the site<br />

of SWM-Wood Oy is almost full of buildings<br />

and matching the building work<br />

with the assembly of machinery must<br />

be taken into account in scheduling<br />

the project.<br />

TreTimber, Estonia<br />

ø Last summer <strong>Jartek</strong> concluded the<br />

delivery contract with Estonian Tre<br />

Timber. This contract comprises the<br />

delivery of a new thermal modification<br />

chamber of 50 m3. The chamber<br />

will be built into the customer’s plant<br />

in Tallinn. It will be connected to the<br />

thermal oil boiler plant delivered by us<br />

and placed adjacent to the chamber<br />

delivered earlier.<br />

With the new chamber, the thermal<br />

wood capacity by Tre Timber is nearly<br />

doubled. This new chamber will be<br />

completed in early 2010.<br />
