The Society for the Prevention of<br />

Aggressiveness and Violence among<br />

Adolescents (<strong>SPAVA</strong>) <strong>is</strong> a nonprofit,<br />

501(c)(3) organization developed to help<br />

approach to life. <strong>SPAVA</strong> began during<br />

the 1999-2000 school year. The first<br />

year of full implementation was the<br />

2000-01 school year.<br />

M<strong>is</strong>sion<br />

To help create a nonviolent society<br />

by being role models for the younger<br />

generation<br />

Objectives<br />

<strong>SPAVA</strong> enables students to:<br />

• Learn the value of hard work and the<br />

joy it generates.<br />

• Learn the skills of anger control and<br />

the art of negotiating.<br />

• D<strong>is</strong>cover the advantages of controlled<br />

aggression.<br />

• Develop the spirit of “liking myself<br />

for who I am.”<br />

• Learn respect, honor, integrity,<br />

resilience, and perseverance.<br />

<strong>What</strong> we do<br />

Trained community volunteer mentors<br />

spend five to ten sessions teaching<br />

the <strong>SPAVA</strong> curriculum to students in<br />

grades one through twelve.<br />

Scholarships<br />

<strong>SPAVA</strong> offers a variety of scholarship<br />

award categories at different grade<br />

levels to students participating in the<br />

program. Most awards are for postsecondary<br />

education and are in the form of<br />

U.S. government bonds.<br />

How can you help?<br />

Volunteer your time as a mentor. Ass<strong>is</strong>t<br />

in funding <strong>SPAVA</strong>.<br />

Who are <strong>SPAVA</strong> members?<br />

Dr. Timir Banerjee, a <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

neurosurgeon, began <strong>SPAVA</strong> to help<br />

with h<strong>is</strong> dream of having conversations<br />

with students about developing a peaceful<br />

community.<br />

The staff of the<br />

<strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> (JCPS)<br />

Volunteer Talent Center<br />

coordinates <strong>SPAVA</strong><br />

activities in schools.<br />

The <strong>SPAVA</strong> Board of Directors <strong>is</strong> a<br />

varied group of <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>County</strong> business<br />

members who share Dr. Banerjee’s<br />

dream.<br />

<strong>SPAVA</strong> volunteers are community<br />

members who volunteer their time to<br />

mentor students.<br />

Students who have been involved in<br />

<strong>SPAVA</strong> become active in their schools<br />

and communities, promoting <strong>SPAVA</strong><br />

beliefs.<br />
