Younger + older students
= win-win education
At many JCPS schools, older students
partner with younger ones
to boost academic skills. Cochran
Elementary students, for instance,
got help with reading and writing
during the last school year when
nearly 140 Jefferson County Traditional
Middle (JCTMS) seventh
graders read books to Cochran’s
5- to 8-year-olds. But these weren’t
just any books. The middle schoolers
themselves wrote and illustrated
them.
This project was featured in Kentucky
Teacher (www.kentucky
teacher.org), a publication of the
Kentucky Department of Education
(KDE). JCTMS teacher Donna Duvall
told a reporter that the project
helped her students learn how to
write for a real audience. It helped
the Cochran students understand
not only that “kids can be authors”
but also that “kids care about
kids.”
Caring older kids also helped
Cochran students learn math.
Through a program called Monster
Math, the school’s third graders
worked one-on-one or in small
groups with students from du-
Pont Manual High. The program
helped the elementary students
master the multiplication tables.
They showed off their skills during
Cochran’s first ever Monster Math
