<strong>JCPS</strong> <strong>students</strong> <strong>featured</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Louisville</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e<br />

The November issue of <strong>Louisville</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>cludes profiles of 22 “Super Kids” at<br />

public and private schools throughout the metro area. Super Kids are <strong>students</strong> who have<br />

“a special strength—<strong>in</strong> math, science, the arts, athletics, or all of the above,” accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the magaz<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>JCPS</strong> <strong>students</strong> are profiled:<br />

• Ilse Lorena Powell, a K<strong>in</strong>g Elementary fifth grader, is a s<strong>in</strong>ger, actress, and Quick<br />

Recall team member—and she’s fluent <strong>in</strong> both English and Spanish.<br />

• Aimee Turner, a Ballard High senior, ranked third worldwide <strong>in</strong> environmental<br />

sciences at the Intel International Science and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Fair. Several colleges have<br />

offered Aimee full scholarships.<br />

• Mackenzie Smith, a Highland Middle seventh grader, is an artist whose work can be<br />

seen on the side of a TARC bus.<br />

• Max Abner, a Youth Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts School senior, has published three plays. He<br />

also studies act<strong>in</strong>g and direct<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Will Eskridge, a Brown School third grader, scored 140 on an IQ test, which ranks<br />

him among the top two percent of people who take the test and earned him a Mensa<br />

membership.<br />

• Jerry Simpson, a Coral Ridge Elementary fourth grader, is ranked No. 1 <strong>in</strong> the state<br />

for his weight class <strong>in</strong> wrestl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Reagan Roy, a duPont Manual High freshman, worked with his sister to write,<br />

illustrate, and publish two books—Petethra’s Secret and Flower: A Girl with<br />

Leukemia—which raised about $9,000 to fight leukemia and sickle-cell disease.<br />

• Ellery Payne, a <strong>Jefferson</strong>town High sophomore, has won a math medal <strong>in</strong> Governor’s<br />

Cup every year s<strong>in</strong>ce fifth grade. He’s <strong>in</strong> <strong>Jefferson</strong>town’s Project Lead the Way<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g program.


<strong>Louisville</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e says it identified and selected the <strong>students</strong> by reach<strong>in</strong>g out to<br />

“teachers, parents, pr<strong>in</strong>cipals, theater and art directors—anybody who could direct us the<br />

nearest young genius.”<br />
