it’s the most expensive one!”
Bulls they favour include SULTAN and ASTOUND, as
well as some of their own bulls.
Among their buys have been DARAWAY TARANAK
VANESSA 2nd. This full sister to DARAWAY TARANAK
VANESSA had produced a couple of heifers through
ET.
A cow of great impact in their herd was ROWANTREE
LESTER TESSIE. “She and her daughters have left some
very good progeny behind,” said Jennifer.
“And we got a very good cow that we bought for
$900 from a friend, EUROKA ASTOUNDING BEE ,and
she went on to win intermediate champ at NSW
state show at Camden in 2003.
“We have a full sister TARCOOLA EUROKA
ASTOUNDING BEE which was a supreme champion
intermediate at the 2008 Wauchope show and we’ve
sold a couple of bulls from her. We are also working
with the Fernleaf, Babe, Vita and Merle families.”
Bull trades have been active, and this has helped to
Coombes through the tight times. “I can’t keep up
with demand for Jersey bulls at the moment,” said
Jennifer.
They also have BRUNCHILLI SAMBO EILEEN 4th, a full
sister to BRUNCHILLI SAMBO EILEEN, the intermediate
champion at 2009 IDW.
Her daughter will be on offer at the state sale
being held alongside the Jersey Australia AGM at
Wauchope. And that’s where Jennifer’s energy is
being directed at the moment.
She is helping organise the event in May. An eightmember
organising committee is planning dinners,
visits to nearby farms and the AGM and sale. They
are expecting about 100 people. “Although it’s hard
to know how many are coming from Victoria and
Queensland. Accommodation is starting to get tight
and we need to know numbers for catering and also
who wants bus tours of farms.”
How did she land a job like that?
“We did too good a job two years ago when we had
the NSW AGM and sale at Wauchope. Everyone
said we did a good job, and so they gave it to us.
They got record prices for the sale, so we’ve landed
it again.
Experience obviously counts.
The Jersey stud started about 13 years ago, although
Terry has worked on the farm for 38 years. Before
that, the family has a tradition in dairying going back
three or four generations.
Jennifer said: “When I came along we switched to
Jerseys. I come from a Jersey family. My mum and
dad had Whitton Jersey stud at Wauchope. Her
widowed Mum, Nina Lindsay, and brothers Ian and
John keep Hastings Jerseys going.
“So I was bought up with Jerseys all my life,” Jennifer
said.
Did Terry know what was coming when he married
her? “Probably not,” she laughed.
