CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF THE MIND:
IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
The twelfth annual David Nelson Duke
Undergraduate Colloquium involves students
from all academic disciplines presenting their
scholarly works to faculty, staff and the community
at large. The Colloquium concept increases
involvement of undergraduates in research,
which William Jewell College believes to be a
hallmark of an excellent liberal arts college.
The Colloquium is named for Dr. David Nelson
DR. DAVID NELSON DUKE Duke (1950-2000), who joined William Jewell’s
religion faculty in 1980. Over his 20-year career
at Jewell, Duke proved himself as theologian,
scholar, teacher and social advocate. His articles and books, community
activism, collegiality and passion for life made naming the
Undergraduate Colloquium in his memory a natural choice.
This year’s Colloquium chairman, Elizabeth Kessler, notes that
“The Duke Undergraduate Colloquium provides an opportunity for our
community to see first-hand the kind of passion and diversity of interest
present among the students and faculty at William Jewell College.”
