2010
Season
Outlook
The William Jewell College softball team enters the 2010 season
with a handful of talent and experience. The Cardinals will be a
young team sporting two seniors on their roster; however, the
team will be solid, led by the return of HAAC All-Conference
players Katie Darby and Amanda Storm.
The team graduated five players from last season, including two
All-Conference selections and captains Kristen Dalley and
Kristen Marshall. But head coach Dustin Combs believes that
the 2010 team has winning potential.
The Cards have depth in the pitching department. The go-to
starting pitcher for the Cards will be returning sophomore
Amanda Storm. Offensively, Storm boasts a .310 batting average
with 3 homeruns and 19 stolen bases last season. As a
pitcher Storm was 12-11 on the 2009 season with 120 strike
outs in 129 innings. She was selected second team Heart of
America All-Conference as a first-year player and started in all 50
games.Sophomore Jaclyn Johnson also brings experience into
the 2010 season. Johnson had a solid first year going 10-8 on
the year with a 2.70 earned run average in 124 innings.Lauren
Cain, a junior transfer from North Central Missouri College, will
also be looked to for leadership this season. Cain was recognized
at North Central as an All-Region selection, and was 34-14
in two seasons.Kelsey Loyd will also provide depth to the pitching
rotation in 2010.
Behind the plate, Jewell will rely on junior captain and transfer
Megan Watkins.Watkins was recognized as an All-Region catcher
at North Central Missouri College while catching 95 games.
She finished her career at NCMC with a .289 batting average,
including 11 doubles and 43 RBIs.Providing depth in the catcher’s
position will be sophomore Katie Darby and first-year player
Kylee Lence.
At first base junior captain Miranda Johnson will be seeing plenty
of playing time as she brings her experience and leadership
to the table.“Miranda has a solid two years of experience and I

look for her junior year to be even better as she becomes an everyday player,”said Coach Combs. Johnson recorded a .270 batting
average in the 2009 season with 12 RBIs and served as a pinch hitter.Junior transfer Lauren Cain will also look for some playing time
at first base. Both players will serve well in the middle of the batting order and could be utilized as a designated hitter when not
playing first base.
Returning at second base is senior captain Jesse Keith. Keith is a four-year starter and has the experience and confidence
necessary to help guide the team at this position. Junior Captain Jessie Sawyer will also provide depth and will see action
as the designated hitter.
Returning at third base will be sophomore Taylor Brown. She started in 42 of 50 games at 3rd in the 2009 season while recording
a .270 batting average with 24 RBIs.Taylor is anticipated to hit in the three-five hole in the batting lineup.
Leading the team at short stop will be junior and three-year starter Courtney Perkins.Perkins’defense is solid. She had a .933 fielding
percentage and led the team conducting 21 double plays last season. Her experience and defense will be a valuable asset in
the upcoming 2010 season.
The outfield positions contain the most depth.Amanda Storm will be the returning starter for the centerfield position. She will also
look to be the lead-off hitter for the season. At right and left fields will be Emily Cline, who will play centerfield when Storm pitches,
and Katie Darby. Both players have strong arms and solid bats. Also competing for time in the outfield will be senior Liz Fritz,
sophomores Erica Scowley,Mia Russell and Kelsey Loyd, and first-year player Kylee Lence.
The utility player for the Cards will be sophomore Katie Darby. She will provide depth at short stop and all three infield positions.
Darby was nominated 2009 Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Conference.She recorded a .405 batting average with 16 doubles
and 31 RBIs as a first-year player and is a definite asset to the Cardinal squad.
The coaching staff is headed by Coach Dustin Combs. Combs is in his fourth year at Jewell where he has set multiple Cardinal
records including most runs scored, most hits, and most stolen bases. In 2008 the Cardinals set a team record with 33 wins and also
finished third in the Region V tournament. The assistant coach for the Cardinals is Andrew Dowis.Dowis also assists with the junior
varsity men’s basketball team at Jewell.
The Lady Cardinals’2010 season will open on Feb.19 in Moore,Okla.,against Hillsdale Baptist College.
