OUR MISSION
The mission of Joliet Area Community Hospice is to provide comprehensive, holistic, community based support service
and care for the terminally ill persons, their caregivers and loved ones without regard to economic status, to enable the
dying person to live peacefully, in comfort, and with dignity to the last moment of life.
OUR LOGO
The circular shape surrounding the design symbolizes the continuity of care provided by Joliet Area Community
Hospice and also symbolizes eternity. The unique combination of people who initiated and continue to make Joliet
Area Community Hospice a reality is represented by the triangle: Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, Silver Cross
Hospital, and the community. The three pointed design within the triangle represents the team of volunteers,
professionals, and family members who provide care and can also be considered as a bridge to eternity for the
patient who is symbolized by the solid circle at the center of the logo.

OUR HISTORY
Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH) has been
providing compassionate, professional care to the
terminally ill patients and their families since 1982. We
are a not-for-profit hospice, community based, state
licensed and Medicare/Medicaid Certified. Over 25,000
patients have received our superior care and service since
our incorporation in 1982. Joliet Area Community
Hospice is a long term United Way partner of Will and
Grundy County.
1982- Hospice becomes available in the Joliet area
through the combined efforts of St. Joseph Medical
Center, Silver Cross Hospital and several community
groups and individuals. Joliet Area Community Hospice
becomes the first hospice established in the community.
1983- Rosemary Bowe is named Executive Director and
opens the initial office located at 333 N. Hammes. The
first group of hospice volunteers received training in
March. Joliet Area Community Hospice admitted its first
patient onto the Bethany Unit at St. Joseph Medical
Center on April 1st. By December, 127 patients had
been served.
1984- The Joliet Area Community Hospice Guild
Volunteer fundraising group was formed.
1985- By the end of the year, over 480 patients had
received hospice services. Joliet Area Community
Hospice becomes member of United Way of Will County.
1986- Joliet Area Community Hospice receives full
licensing from the State of Illinois Department of Health.
Mary Jo Smith becomes the second Executive Director
with 2 additional staff members. In August, the offices
were moved to the Marycrest Shopping Center at 2112
W. Jefferson St.
1986- January - Over 820 patients received services
with an average daily census of 27 patients.
1990- In October, Joliet Area Community Hospice
becomes the first hospice in Will County to qualify as a
provider of Medicare hospice benefits. Over 1,200
patients have received hospice services.
1990- Moved into new offices donated by Jack &
Virgina Rogers in 1989 at 335 W. Jefferson St.
Volunteers spent close to a year renovating the space
with donated services from the City of Joliet, Cliff Bender,
architect, and many others to make it functional for the
needs of the organization. Berryman Transfer volunteered
their time to complete the move.
1992- In December, Duane Krieger becomes the third
Executive Director.
1994- Almost 2000 dying patients and their families
have been served by Joliet Area Community Hospice
since opening in 1983.
1999- The Board of Directors begins pursuing a dream
of building the first freestanding Hospice Home in Illinois.
2001- A $3 million capital campaign begins to raise the
funds to build the Hospice Home.
2002- In September, a groundbreaking ceremony is
held at the site of the Hospice Home.
2003- Over 10,000 patients have been served by 110
employees and 200 active volunteers with a daily census
of 140 patients.
2004- In May, the Joliet Area Community Hospice
Home opens, becoming the first freestanding hospice
home in Illinois.
2007- Having served over 12,000 patients with an
average daily census of 165 patients and over 1,200
families using bereavement services, Joliet Area
Community Hospice continues to grow with over 150
staff members and 250 active volunteers.
2009- Rick Kasper is named and becomes the 4th CEO
of Joliet Area Community Hospice.
2012- Over 20,000 patients have been cared for by
Joliet Area Community Hospice since 1983.
2012- JACH celebrates its 30th year of service to Will,
Grundy, Kendall, Cook, Kankakee, and Dupage
Counties.

Community Hospice
In 1983 Joliet Area Community Hospice accepted our
very first patient. Now 30 years later we have provided
quality end of life care to over 25,000 patients and have
assisted many more through their grief.

It is a privilege to work with a hospice team of this
caliber. We have so many long term staff. In an industry
where the average tenure is two years, Joliet Area
Community Hospice has tenure of more than three times
that. We have long standing relationships with hospitals,
assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and families.
Despite the many changes in the healthcare environment
that have and will continue to take place over the coming
years, we are holding true to our values. We will continue
to do what’s best for our patients and families. We will
continue to provide comprehensive, holistic, community
based support and care for terminally ill persons, their
caregivers, and loved ones without regard to economic
status. That is what has driven us for the past thirty years
and that will help guide us through the unknown waters of
healthcare reform that lay ahead of us.
It's what our staff does every day for our patients. It is
how we transform despair into hope. We call this power
"the Mayo Effect." Working together as one organization
with one purpose, one direction, one plan, we strive to
turn the impossible into the possible.
So what does the future look like for Joliet Area
Community Hospice? I feel it is strong. More people are
better educated about their healthcare options. This
means that more people are choosing hospice care over
other forms of healthcare because of our holistic,
community based support services. This means that no
matter what we face in the future, we know that making
sure we take care of our patients and families and
continue to do the right thing; we are making a difference
right here where it matters to us.

VOLUNTEERS
Our volunteers always rise to the occasion with
enthusiasm, a smile, and a caring heart. Whether they
are sitting vigil, providing direct care, helping in the
hospice home, gardening, tending to a veteran, or being
community ambassadors, they can always be counted on
to go above and beyond the call of duty for Joliet Area
Community Hospice. Take Genevieve Vranicar for
example (pictured to the right). She is 95 years young
and shows up for work faithfully each week to tackle
each task that is presented before her. She’s never late
and is always on time. The remarkable thing is that these
efforts are not unique to just Genevieve, the same can be
said for all of our 260 volunteers. Below is an example of
the great services that were provided by our volunteers.

SOCIAL SERVICES
Special Services, performed by special people, that
routinely go beyond the requirements for hospice. Our
Social Work team provides an amazing array of support
and joy to the patients, families and communities in
which Joliet Area Community Hospice has been proudly
serving for 30 years.
Services provided include:
Counseling, Bereavement, Support groups,
Music Therapy, Massage Therapy,
Pet Therapy, and Art Therapy.
JACH PROVIDED OVER 1,200 HOURS OF SUPPORT
IN THE COMMUNITY THAT WERE NON HOSPICE RELATED.

CLINICAL
Providing hospice care is a calling and not just a
profession. The requirements for each patient are often
different. Our clinicians must be sensitive to needs of the
patients and their families, experts in hospice care, all the
while possessing the ability to adjust to situations at a
moment’s notice. Thankfully these are skill sets that the
clinicians at Joliet Area Community Hospice possess.
Whether patients are being cared for in a skilled nursing
facility, assisted living facility, private residence, the
hospice home or in our pediatric program they will
always receive superior compassionate hospice care that
is second to none.
“To have a child with a life limiting illness is overwhelming but
Joliet Area Community Hospice provided the entire family with
love, care and support to manage through the final short
months of Peyton’s short life. We will never forget the support
they were able to provide for us to enjoy the time we had.”

THE HOSPICE HOME
The hospice home is just that “A Home”. A home that is
designed to provide 24 hours/7 days a week of short
term care to terminally ill patients who are experiencing
pain or symptoms related to their terminal illness that is
not manageable at home.
Sitting on 17 plush acres everything in and around the
home is meant to make what can be a difficult time for
patients and families as enjoyable as possible. From the
16 private rooms with sleeping accommodations for
family and private bathrooms to the stocked pond with
gazebos and walking paths around it, dining room that
comfortable seats ten and comforting silence of the
solace room, no expense was spared in effort to make
your stay with Joliet Area Community Hospice the next
best thing to home.

The word hospice is often mistakenly thought of as being synonymous
with death but in actuality it’s just the opposite. Its about living.
JACH has been the final stop in life’s journey for many people.
But this summer it was the beginning. We had our 1st wedding.

THE LIVES WE’VE
TOUCHED IN 2012
My father was at Sunny Hill Nursing Home. He made a turn for the worse, so we called Joliet Area
Community Hospice. The care my dad received was over the top. I had a great peace. I knew he
was being very well taken care of. They played music for him, got special things for his legs. If he
had pain they called the Doctor right away. They treated him with dignity and he received the best
care. His last days and hours were very pleasant.
I am forever grateful and honored to say thank you.
