Fourth Sunday in Advent Religious Education<br />

The greatest event in the whole history <strong>of</strong> the world<br />

was the Incarnation <strong>of</strong> the eternal Word by whom the<br />

world was redeemed and peace was restored between<br />

God and men. Our Lady was chosen as his instrument<br />

for this tremendous event.<br />

VATICAN CITY (<strong>Catholic</strong> Online) - The liturgy <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fourth Sunday <strong>of</strong> Advent immerses us fully in the mystery<br />

<strong>of</strong> the nativity story, preparing us to recognize the<br />

coming <strong>of</strong> the Lord into the world after waiting in the<br />

virginal womb <strong>of</strong> Mary. The God who created all<br />

things, the Lord <strong>of</strong> time and history, manifests himself<br />

in the humble stable <strong>of</strong> Bethlehem.<br />

Most Holy Mary - the virgin <strong>of</strong> silence and <strong>of</strong> listening,<br />

the virgin <strong>of</strong> waiting - is at the heart <strong>of</strong> today's Gospel<br />

reading because it is through her that the Lord manifests<br />

himself to the world. Mary becomes the living<br />

temple <strong>of</strong> the Lord. For all Christians She represents<br />

the unsurpassable model <strong>of</strong> how to welcome the Word<br />

made flesh so that each <strong>of</strong> us can become, like her, a<br />

"dwelling place" for the Lord.<br />

Long before the birth <strong>of</strong> Jesus, as we hear in the first<br />

reading, David had decided to construct a temple to the<br />

Lord. God, however, spoke to him through the prophet<br />

Nathan, saying that he himself fixed his dwelling in the<br />

midst <strong>of</strong> his people and that he had also secured a long<br />

line <strong>of</strong> descendants for David (cfr. 2 Samuel 10). This<br />

ancient plan <strong>of</strong> God's love - making his home among us<br />

- now becomes "what scripture has predicted, and it is<br />

all part <strong>of</strong> the way the eternal God wants things to be.<br />

through Jesus Christ" (Romans 16: 25-27). It is realized<br />

through the mystery <strong>of</strong> the incarnation <strong>of</strong> the Son<br />

<strong>of</strong> God.<br />

The extraordinary encounter between Mary and the<br />

Angel happened in everyday life, and it is the image <strong>of</strong><br />

the permanent encounter that God wants to have with<br />

humanity - and with each one <strong>of</strong> us. The announcement:<br />

"Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with<br />

you" (Luke 1:28) reveals the fullness <strong>of</strong> grace present in<br />

the Virgin Mary. This is why the great Daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Sion rejoices - because God loves her!<br />

The Virgin Mary wants us all to be united with her joy<br />

at the coming <strong>of</strong> the Son and the message that His coming<br />

brings. It is a message <strong>of</strong> unconditional, personal,<br />

freely given love that is able to change our lives, transforming<br />

them in the present and bringing fourth new<br />

horizons that enable us to participate in Eternal life.<br />

Director’s Corner:<br />

“To live well is nothing other than to love God with all<br />

one’s heart, with all one’s soul, and with all one’s efforts;<br />

from this it comes that love is kept whole and uncorrupted<br />

disturb it (and this is fortitude). It obeys only [God] (and<br />

this is justice) and is careful in discerning things, so as<br />

not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is prudence).<br />

In today’s Gospel, (Matthew 1:18-25), Joseph is now<br />

aware <strong>of</strong> Mary’s pregnancy. He wants to separate from<br />

Mary, and save her from the stoning she would receive<br />

according to Mosaic Law. The Law states that a woman<br />

is considered an adulterer, if she has a child during her<br />

betrothal time, and the baby is not the <strong>of</strong>fspring <strong>of</strong> her<br />

spouse. Joseph being a righteous man wants to send her<br />

away quietly, so as not to subject her to this fate. But,<br />

Joseph is visited by an angel in a dream. The angel says<br />

to Joseph not to worry, he will be the foster-father <strong>of</strong><br />

Jesus. Jesus, the name that means God saves!<br />

CHRISTMAS MUSIC<br />

Christmas is a special time, and the music<br />

<strong>of</strong> the season is something we all look<br />

forward to. The choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists<br />

at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Anthony</strong>’s have<br />

prepared music that we know will<br />

make this year’s celebration joyous and<br />

memorable.<br />

Remember, caroling and special music presentations<br />

start 30 minutes before the scheduled Mass time<br />

Social Justice Corner — December 22, 2013 EAT SMART with Sheila Conway<br />

The Lord's are the earth and its fullness; the world and<br />

those who dwell in it. Psalm 24:1<br />

Living in a society that values affluence and ownership<br />

makes it very difficult for us to recognize that the world<br />

and all its wonders are God's and not ours. We're invited<br />

to simply enjoy God's world. <strong>St</strong>. Francis also lived in<br />

a society that put great emphasis on possessions, but he<br />

followed Jesus' love <strong>of</strong> simplicity very carefully.<br />

“Simplicity is not poverty. Simplicity means that we live<br />

close enough to the limits <strong>of</strong> our resources that we can<br />

rely on God's love for us and appreciate the unadorned<br />

wonders <strong>of</strong> Creation. The gift <strong>of</strong> simplicity is found in<br />

the man or the woman who can be thankful for humble<br />

beauty. If we take the time to look at the marvels <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world, we cannot help but lift our hearts to God in<br />

thanksgiving.<br />

Simplicity supports the celebration <strong>of</strong> life. Francis advocated<br />

simplicity and realized that simplicity and enjoyment<br />

<strong>of</strong> life's goods are linked. As with all elements<br />

<strong>of</strong> Franciscan spirituality, his commitment to simplicity<br />

mirrors Jesus' example. Jesus appreciated wine, food,<br />

health, loving birds, caring touch, children, women,<br />

men, storytelling, and other good things <strong>of</strong> the earth.<br />

Simple living is not always simple to do... We are<br />

pressured not to be satisfied with having just enough…<br />

Francis challenges us to enjoy life, not own it.”<br />

Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating-- By Greta Macaire, R.D.<br />

If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes<br />

500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above<br />

your normal/maintenance<br />

consumption to gain one<br />

pound. It is impossible to<br />

gain weight from one piece<br />

<strong>of</strong> pie!<br />

Practice Healthy Holiday<br />

Cooking. Preparing favorite<br />

dishes lower in fat and calories<br />

will help promote<br />

healthy holiday eating. Incorporate some <strong>of</strong> these simple<br />

-cooking tips in traditional holiday recipes to make them<br />

healthier.<br />

Gravy — Refrigerate the gravy to harden fat. Skim the<br />

fat <strong>of</strong>f. This will save a whopping 56 gm <strong>of</strong> fat per cup.<br />

Dressing — Use a little less bread and add more onions,<br />

garlic, celery, and vegetables. Add fruits such as cranberries<br />

or apples. Moisten or flavor with low fat low<br />

sodium chicken or vegetable broth and applesauce.<br />

Turkey – Enjoy delicious, roasted turkey breast without<br />

the skin and save 11 grams <strong>of</strong> saturated fat per 3 oz<br />

serving.<br />

Green Bean Casserole — Cook fresh green beans with<br />

chucks <strong>of</strong> potatoes instead <strong>of</strong> cream soup. Top with almonds<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> fried onion rings.<br />

Mashed Potato — Use skim milk, chicken broth, garlic<br />

or garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese instead <strong>of</strong> whole<br />

milk and butter.<br />

Quick Holiday Nog — Four bananas, 1-1/2 cups skim<br />

milk or soymilk, 1-1/2 cups plain nonfat yogurt, 1/4<br />

teaspoon rum extract, and ground nutmeg. Blend all<br />

ingredients except nutmeg. Puree until smooth. Top with<br />

nutmeg.<br />

Desserts — Make a crustless pumpkin pie. Substitute<br />

two egg whites for each whole egg in baked recipes.<br />

Replace heavy cream with evaporated skim milk in<br />

cheesecakes and cream pies. Top cakes with fresh fruit,<br />

fruit sauce, or a sprinkle <strong>of</strong> powdered sugar instead <strong>of</strong><br />

fattening frosting.<br />

Enjoy the holidays, plan a time for activity, incorporate<br />

healthy recipes into your holiday meals, and don't restrict<br />

yourself from enjoying your favorite holiday foods.<br />

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund<br />

We thank all who faithfully contribute to the building<br />

fund/Capital Campaign Fund on a monthly basis. In<br />

addition to the normal day-to-day facility upkeep, we<br />

maintain our buildings and grounds; all this requires<br />

perpetual investments. Preserving the grounds and insuring<br />

that everything is fully functional for our Parish<br />

members is paramount. Not long ago we: sealed the<br />

parking lot, replaced the old rectory ro<strong>of</strong> and painted<br />

the rectory’s exterior, installed a new ro<strong>of</strong> on the school<br />

building, performed <strong>Church</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> repairs, completed<br />

work on the baptismal font, and made improvements to<br />

the school building’s security system. We still have just<br />

over $194,000.00 Capital Campaign loan balance<br />

requiring 24 more monthly payments <strong>of</strong> $8,446.86<br />

(including interest). Thank you for your continued<br />

generous support.<br />

The Mass Offerings for December 15.Your donations<br />

are important; they help Saint <strong>Anthony</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Padua</strong> continue<br />

the good work in the parish and the community.<br />

pledged to date: $74,025.00, paid to date: $64,629.50. I<br />

am always grateful and moved by the level <strong>of</strong> support<br />

you give to our parish; thank you! May God continue to<br />

bless you and your family.<br />

We have reached our $63,000 goal, but please continue<br />

to support the campaign; our Parish is rewarded for<br />

overachievement. For 100% attainment <strong>of</strong> our goal, we<br />

receive 15% back from the Trenton Diocese. For every<br />

dollar over 100%, we will receive 50% back<br />

directly to our Parish. Overachieving as much as we<br />

IV DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO (Mateo 1:18-24)<br />

No dudes en recibir en tu casa a Jesús! El centro del relato<br />

de San Mateo es Jesús. Su nacimiento llega en un momento<br />

crucial de la historia de los descendientes de Abraham.<br />

Jesús es Hijo de un pueblo y de una familia. El evangelio<br />

nos toma de la mano para descubrir quien es Jesús, el Mesías;<br />

la salvación que Dios <strong>of</strong>rece a su pueblo.<br />

Con la aparición del ángel a José, el evangelista nos introduce<br />

en el mundo de Dios, o mejor dicho, hace presencial<br />

a Dios en nuestro mundo con el proyecto de Jesús, pues el<br />

será el cumplimiento de todas sus promesas. De ahí que la<br />

referencia a Isaías, además de insertar el lugar de la misión<br />

de Jesús en la historia de la salvación, revela el significado<br />

más hermoso y pr<strong>of</strong>undo del nombre y la manera de ser de<br />

Dios; un Dios cercano.<br />

El evangelista, sin embargo nos hace descubrir una actitud<br />

implícita de José y María; renuncian a su propio futuro<br />

para abrirse generosamente al proyecto de Dios. José piensa<br />

en solucionar todo mediante sus propias valoraciones,<br />

así estaba mandado y era claro lo que debia hacer. Sin embargo,<br />

una vez que percibe la voz de Dios atraves de su<br />

ángel decide abrazar un proyecto ajeno, como hizo también<br />

María.<br />

Así lo indica la primera cita cumplimiento del evangelio de<br />

Mateo. “esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que había<br />

dicho el Señor refiriéndose a la actitud de María pero también<br />

a la disponibilidad extrema de José. El proyecto es lo<br />

dicho por Dios. Esta disposición para hacer suyo el proyecto<br />

salvador de Dios, al precio de los propios planes, queda<br />

clara cuando afirma. “Cuando José despertó... hizo lo que<br />

le había mandado el ángel del Señor y recibió a su esposa...<br />

Ella dio a luz un hijo el cual llamo Jesús.<br />

A veces nos sentimos solos, incluso desanimados y como<br />

que hasta le perdemos gusto a la vida, porque nos asalta la<br />

impresión de que todo empeora. No pocos insisten en que<br />

estamos metidos en un callejón sin salida, y hasta le damos<br />

la razón al decir: ¿Qué le vamos hacer? Ya ni llorar es<br />

bueno” Prestamos voz al desanimo y a la frustración. No se<br />

puede seguir a Jesús sin FE, sin lucha o resistencia, en una<br />

palabra, sin esperanza. Dios se ha hecho cercano en el<br />

nacimiento de su Hijo para <strong>of</strong>recernos salvación y alentar<br />

nuestra vida. Hagamos un plan de vida en esta Navidad<br />

para decidirnos a vivir con Jesús, es decir, para darle cabida<br />

en nuestra relación con los demás.<br />
