Fourth Sunday in Advent Religious Education
The greatest event in the whole history of the world
was the Incarnation of the eternal Word by whom the
world was redeemed and peace was restored between
God and men. Our Lady was chosen as his instrument
for this tremendous event.
VATICAN CITY (Catholic Online) - The liturgy of the
fourth Sunday of Advent immerses us fully in the mystery
of the nativity story, preparing us to recognize the
coming of the Lord into the world after waiting in the
virginal womb of Mary. The God who created all
things, the Lord of time and history, manifests himself
in the humble stable of Bethlehem.
Most Holy Mary - the virgin of silence and of listening,
the virgin of waiting - is at the heart of today's Gospel
reading because it is through her that the Lord manifests
himself to the world. Mary becomes the living
temple of the Lord. For all Christians She represents
the unsurpassable model of how to welcome the Word
made flesh so that each of us can become, like her, a
"dwelling place" for the Lord.
Long before the birth of Jesus, as we hear in the first
reading, David had decided to construct a temple to the
Lord. God, however, spoke to him through the prophet
Nathan, saying that he himself fixed his dwelling in the
midst of his people and that he had also secured a long
line of descendants for David (cfr. 2 Samuel 10). This
ancient plan of God's love - making his home among us
- now becomes "what scripture has predicted, and it is
all part of the way the eternal God wants things to be.
through Jesus Christ" (Romans 16: 25-27). It is realized
through the mystery of the incarnation of the Son
of God.
The extraordinary encounter between Mary and the
Angel happened in everyday life, and it is the image of
the permanent encounter that God wants to have with
humanity - and with each one of us. The announcement:
"Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with
you" (Luke 1:28) reveals the fullness of grace present in
the Virgin Mary. This is why the great Daughter of
Sion rejoices - because God loves her!
The Virgin Mary wants us all to be united with her joy
at the coming of the Son and the message that His coming
brings. It is a message of unconditional, personal,
freely given love that is able to change our lives, transforming
them in the present and bringing fourth new
horizons that enable us to participate in Eternal life.
Director’s Corner:
“To live well is nothing other than to love God with all
one’s heart, with all one’s soul, and with all one’s efforts;
from this it comes that love is kept whole and uncorrupted
(through temperance). No misfortune can
disturb it (and this is fortitude). It obeys only [God] (and
this is justice) and is careful in discerning things, so as
not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is prudence).
— St. Augustine
In today’s Gospel, (Matthew 1:18-25), Joseph is now
aware of Mary’s pregnancy. He wants to separate from
Mary, and save her from the stoning she would receive
according to Mosaic Law. The Law states that a woman
is considered an adulterer, if she has a child during her
betrothal time, and the baby is not the offspring of her
spouse. Joseph being a righteous man wants to send her
away quietly, so as not to subject her to this fate. But,
Joseph is visited by an angel in a dream. The angel says
to Joseph not to worry, he will be the foster-father of
Jesus. Jesus, the name that means God saves!
Social Justice Corner — December 22, 2013 EAT SMART with Sheila Conway
The Lord's are the earth and its fullness; the world and
those who dwell in it. Psalm 24:1
Living in a society that values affluence and ownership
makes it very difficult for us to recognize that the world
and all its wonders are God's and not ours. We're invited
to simply enjoy God's world. St. Francis also lived in
a society that put great emphasis on possessions, but he
followed Jesus' love of simplicity very carefully.
“Simplicity is not poverty. Simplicity means that we live
close enough to the limits of our resources that we can
rely on God's love for us and appreciate the unadorned
wonders of Creation. The gift of simplicity is found in
the man or the woman who can be thankful for humble
beauty. If we take the time to look at the marvels of the
world, we cannot help but lift our hearts to God in
thanksgiving.
Simplicity supports the celebration of life. Francis advocated
simplicity and realized that simplicity and enjoyment
of life's goods are linked. As with all elements
of Franciscan spirituality, his commitment to simplicity
mirrors Jesus' example. Jesus appreciated wine, food,
health, loving birds, caring touch, children, women,
men, storytelling, and other good things of the earth.
Simple living is not always simple to do... We are
pressured not to be satisfied with having just enough…
Francis challenges us to enjoy life, not own it.”
Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating-- By Greta Macaire, R.D.
If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes
500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above
your normal/maintenance
consumption to gain one
pound. It is impossible to
gain weight from one piece
of pie!
Practice Healthy Holiday
Cooking. Preparing favorite
dishes lower in fat and calories
will help promote
healthy holiday eating. Incorporate some of these simple
-cooking tips in traditional holiday recipes to make them
healthier.
Gravy — Refrigerate the gravy to harden fat. Skim the
fat off. This will save a whopping 56 gm of fat per cup.
Dressing — Use a little less bread and add more onions,
garlic, celery, and vegetables. Add fruits such as cranberries
or apples. Moisten or flavor with low fat low
sodium chicken or vegetable broth and applesauce.
Turkey – Enjoy delicious, roasted turkey breast without
the skin and save 11 grams of saturated fat per 3 oz
serving.
Green Bean Casserole — Cook fresh green beans with
chucks of potatoes instead of cream soup. Top with almonds
instead of fried onion rings.
Mashed Potato — Use skim milk, chicken broth, garlic
or garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese instead of whole
milk and butter.
Quick Holiday Nog — Four bananas, 1-1/2 cups skim
milk or soymilk, 1-1/2 cups plain nonfat yogurt, 1/4
teaspoon rum extract, and ground nutmeg. Blend all
ingredients except nutmeg. Puree until smooth. Top with
nutmeg.
Desserts — Make a crustless pumpkin pie. Substitute
two egg whites for each whole egg in baked recipes.
Replace heavy cream with evaporated skim milk in
cheesecakes and cream pies. Top cakes with fresh fruit,
fruit sauce, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar instead of
fattening frosting.
Enjoy the holidays, plan a time for activity, incorporate
healthy recipes into your holiday meals, and don't restrict
yourself from enjoying your favorite holiday foods.
In the long run, your mind and body will thank you.
Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
We thank all who faithfully contribute to the building
fund/Capital Campaign Fund on a monthly basis. In
addition to the normal day-to-day facility upkeep, we
maintain our buildings and grounds; all this requires
perpetual investments. Preserving the grounds and insuring
that everything is fully functional for our Parish
members is paramount. Not long ago we: sealed the
parking lot, replaced the old rectory roof and painted
the rectory’s exterior, installed a new roof on the school
building, performed Church roof repairs, completed
work on the baptismal font, and made improvements to
the school building’s security system. We still have just
over $194,000.00 Capital Campaign loan balance
requiring 24 more monthly payments of $8,446.86
(including interest). Thank you for your continued
Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all diocese
members to further the work of our ministries. We all
have a vital part in what we do in Christ’s name; we can
all share in what we do with a gift to the Bishop’s
Annual Appeal. When we make a gift to the appeal, we
follow the command that we are One Family, Our
Family in Christ with every fiber of our lives. This year
St. Anthony of Padua’s share of the goal is $63,000;
pledged to date: $74,025.00, paid to date: $64,629.50. I
am always grateful and moved by the level of support
you give to our parish; thank you! May God continue to
bless you and your family.
We have reached our $63,000 goal, but please continue
to support the campaign; our Parish is rewarded for
overachievement. For 100% attainment of our goal, we
receive 15% back from the Trenton Diocese. For every
dollar over 100%, we will receive 50% back
directly to our Parish. Overachieving as much as we
can is very beneficial to St. Anthony of Padua Church.
Just 284 families (to date) have made contributions.
Please take a moment to make a “gift”; help our Bishop,
our Diocese, and our Parish. Send gifts to: Diocese of
IV DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO (Mateo 1:18-24)
No dudes en recibir en tu casa a Jesús! El centro del relato
de San Mateo es Jesús. Su nacimiento llega en un momento
crucial de la historia de los descendientes de Abraham.
Jesús es Hijo de un pueblo y de una familia. El evangelio
nos toma de la mano para descubrir quien es Jesús, el Mesías;
