<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>Gains</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Recognition</strong>!<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>'s Pre Med program has recently gained national recognition for their efforts to<br />

Increase Diversity in Medicine and to Decrease Health Disparities.<br />

Since 2007 Dr. Bridget Rideau, <strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong>’s Pre Med Coordinator and JSU and <strong>University</strong> of Mississippi<br />

School of Medicine Alumnae; has been working to increase underrepresented minorities in Medicine and<br />

other Health Careers.<br />

During this time, through the help, collaboration and support of <strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong>’s<br />

President Dr. Carolyn Meyers; Dr. Mark Hardy, Provost & VP For Academic<br />

Affairs; Dr. Felix Okojie, VP for Research; Dr. Paul Tchounwou, Dean of the<br />

College of Science, Engineering & Technology; Dr. Loretta Moore, Associate<br />

Dean; Dr. Gregorio Begonia & Dr. HongtaoYu, Department Chairs of Biology<br />

and Chemistry and Biochemistry; Dr. Maria Harvey & Dr. Connie Dixon, JSU<br />

Honors College, Dr. Charles Spann & Dr. George Washington, past Pre<br />

Health Advisors; Dr. Bridget Rideau, JSU Pre Med Coordinator;<br />

And the faculty and staff of <strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong>,<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> has made significant gains in Increasing Diversity in<br />

Medicine and other Health Careers and Decreasing Health Disparities.<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> has had the auspicious opportunity to be in partnership with Meharry Medical<br />

College in their BS/MD program, in which students earn their BS degrees from <strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> then proceed<br />

to earn their M.D. at Meharry Medical College whose mission statement is “Worship of God Through<br />

Service to Mankind.” and attend paid summer internships at Meharry. (www.mmc.edu)<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> has had the great opportunity to be in partnership with Tuskegee School of<br />

Veterinary Medicine, the country’s only Historically Black School of Veterinary Medicine and attend<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> also has been able to enjoy a unique partnership with the <strong>University</strong> of Health<br />

Medical Sciences of St. Kitts and the International <strong>University</strong> of Nursing. In which JSU students are<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> has also been named a feeder school for Duke <strong>University</strong> School of Nursing’s<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> continues to work with the <strong>University</strong> of Mississippi Medical Center and their<br />

Division of Multicultural Affairs, especially their pipeline programs and MedCorp Direct.<br />

1st Tour 4 Diversity in Medicine.<br />

Started by two physicians looking to help decrease health disparities and educate and inspire students from<br />

diverse backgrounds, the Tour 4 Diversity in Medicine will be February 20-24.<br />

The Tour 4 Diversity in Medicine will visit Hampton <strong>University</strong>, Johnson Smith <strong>University</strong>, North<br />

Carolina <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Tuskegee <strong>University</strong> and end with<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>!<br />

The Pre Med Conference<br />

will be at<br />

<strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />

on February 24!<br />
