Welcome
to Your Newspaper
Hello, dear shoppers, tenants,
staff and every member of
the vibrant community that
makes Jurong Point the beating
heart of the west. My name is
William Seet, and I’m the Chief
Executive of Jurong Point. It’s
my great pleasure to welcome
you to our very own fortnightly
newspaper – JPeeps!
and receive this super-sized,
super-cool tote bag, subject to
availability.
It’s no coincidence that we have chosen
this year to launch our newspaper, since
2013 marks our 18th Anniversary. Over
the years, Jurong Point has grown and
prospered to become the largest and most
popular suburban mall in Singapore. Every
month, we welcome more than 5 million
visitors who shop, eat, chill and use the
services of more than 400 quality tenants.
Our popularity is partly explained
by the fact that we are one of the most
accessible malls in Singapore, with a
bus interchange, a train station and taxi
stands right at our doorstep. No doubt it
has a lot to do with the fact that we have
everything you could possibly need, from
supermarkets to boutiques, restaurants
and medical clinics, under
one gigantic roof. Take a
leisurely stroll from JP1 to
JP2 and you immediately
understand why we’ve
been called the ‘Orchard
Road of the West’.
Though we take pride
in our achievements, we
are not about to rest on our laurels. We
are acutely aware of your changing needs
and expectations, and always strive to
be dynamic, innovative and delightfully
We are acutely aware
surprising. In accordance with exciting
plans that will soon be revealed, we are
constantly working to enhance your every
shopping experience at Jurong Point.
Speaking of exciting, I am personally
very excited about the launch of JPeeps.
The culmination of many months of
pondering, it’s a place and a space where
all our stakeholders can come together
and exchange news, show cool new
products and share neat ideas. I
hope that you will come to look
forward to it every alternate
Friday, all year round.
As we turn the page on
an exciting new chapter
in our history – the
launch of JPeeps, a
‘house newspaper’
on a scale
unprecedented in
Singapore – I’d
like to thank
you sincerely
“Happiness is a long queue,” so says Madam
FROM PENANG TO JURONG POINT
After just six months in Singapore, Madam Chin Lay Kah
DON’T READ MY LIPS
While Alfred acknowledges that discrimination and
misconceptions about the deaf exist, he credits the support
of his family and friends for helping him overcome the
frustrations associated with deafness.
Due to the profundity of his hearing loss, hearing aids are
of little help to Alfred, and lip-reading is riddled with traps.
For example, Alfred explained that many words have similar
lip movements, such as ‘Pager’ and ‘Major’, ‘Colourful’ and
‘I love you’.
Instead of lip-reading, Alfred prefers to rely on writing
and sign language for communication. He explained that
this universal non-verbal language is very easy to learn,
especially when it comes to familiar hand gestures such as
‘cook’, ‘food’, ‘talk’ or ‘stop’. Alfred added that it is very
useful not just for the deaf but also for hearing people. For
example, in noisy
places you tend to
talk more loudly, but
with sign language
you can communicate
easily without raising
your voice.
In noisy places you tend
to talk more loudly, but
with sign language you
can communicate easily
without raising your voice.
IMPOSSIBLE IS NOT IN ALFRED’S VOCABULARY
Alfred has completed his accounting degree and has
worked in several different industries. Has it been easy?
Alfred said with disarming honesty, “It has always been a
difficult journey. Looking back, I am glad that I have made
it so far. Now I am writing my answers to you and you are
reading them. This says a lot.”
We hear you, Alfred.
Loving Jurong
In Every Sense
Jurong resident, Alfred Yeo, doesn’t let
deafness get in the way of being heard. This
friendly accountant volunteers his feedback
to the authorities on public transport, and has
been praised by the Deputy Prime Minister
and Finance Minister as an example of
Singaporeans investing in a better Singapore.
We met for a chat at Bakerzin, Jurong Point.
ALFRED HEARTS JURONG
When we asked Alfred how he feels about Jurong, he wrote
this love note, “I was raised in Jurong, and I love everything
about Jurong! The greens and parks scattered across Jurong
and Jurong Lake allow me to jog and cycle in the morning or
in the evening. Jurong has many amenities that you can find
in the central area, such as shopping malls, cinemas and food
centres as well as sports and recreation centres.”
‘Everything’, we soon discovered, includes Jurong Point.
Alfred summed it up, “It is a huge shopping mall next to an
MRT station. It has everything that residents need – clothes,
shoes, kitchen accessories, banking services, movies and so
on. There’s a wide variety of restaurants and eating places.
It is THE place to meet friends and makan or go shopping
together.”
Though Alfred never remembers hearing, he remembers
speaking up at an early age. In 1996, when he and his
family moved in to Taman Jurong, the nearby park was still
under construction,
and in a muddy,
unsightly state. He
wrote in to HDB to
lodge a complaint. A
letter was promptly
sent back to his
parents, stating that their son had contacted them about
the park, and that they were taking immediate action by
sending a contractor to complete the works. Henceforth,
Alfred appreciated the importance of expressing himself.
Today, Alfred is a spokesperson for every commuter,
not only the deaf and hearing-impaired. He first began
to take photos and video footage of public transport
blood vessels or hormonal imbalance. If you have a family
history of high blood pressure, or suffer from obesity or
diabetes, you are at a higher than average risk. More often
than not, hypertension has no symptoms. In rare and severe
cases, patients may suffer from headaches or giddiness.
THE IMPORTANCE OF DIAGNOSIS
Hypertension increases the risk of heart disease, heart
failure, stroke, peripheral artery disease (narrowing of the
blood vessels of the limbs) and kidney failure. Therefore if
you show any signs or risk factors, it is important to seek
diagnosis and treatment.
Upon diagnosis, your doctor will take a medical history,
examine you and check for signs of complications such
as heart failure. You may be advised to check your blood
pressure at home, to help you better monitor and manage
your hypertension. In addition, your doctor will discuss
with you the appropriate, personal target for your blood
pressure and which drug(s) would be most suitable.
Hey Doc,
Let’s Talk About…
High Blood Pressure
World Health Day on
7 April marked the
anniversary of the
founding of WHO in
1948. This year’s theme
is high blood pressure.
Dr Terence Tan of
Parkway Shenton shares
his insights.
WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?
Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by blood on the
walls of blood vessels. It is measured as two numbers: the
systolic and the diastolic numbers. Systolic pressure is the
peak pressure in the arteries and diastolic is the minimum
pressure. For example, if your BP is 140/70 mmHg, your
systolic pressure is 140 mmHg, and your systolic pressure
is 70 mmHg. The unit of measurement, mmHg, signifies
millimetres of mercury.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition
where the blood is pumped around the body at a higher
pressure than normal. Some 20% of Singaporeans
aged below 70, and 50% of those aged over 60 have
hypertension.
CAUSES, RISK FACTORS, SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Blood pressure varies naturally with levels of exertion
and individual health. However, when blood pressure is
constantly raised, treatment may be required. In 95% of
cases, the cause is unknown. In 5% of cases, it is due to
specific conditions such as kidney disease, narrowing of
HYPERTENSION
PREVENTION
As the saying goes, prevention
is better than cure. To
minimise your risk of developing
hypertension, a healthy lifestyle is key, and diet plays a
particularly significant role. Limit your intake of salt, fats
and cholesterol; and increase your intake of fibre. Aim to
exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week.
Good luck, and be well.
*BMI is the Body Mass Index. This is calculated by dividing your weight in kg by the
square of your height in metres. The ideal BMI for Asians is between 18.5kg/m² to 23 kg/m².
A Well, it is certainly a tough place to be a trail runner!
You definitely have to be a committed person to run in
Singapore’s hot, humid climate and cityscapes.
Q Please tell us how you first got into
running, and why you love it so much.
A I first got into running in elementary school
Physical Education class when we would run a
timed mile each year. I was always the fastest
in my class, so when I was in the 5th grade
(age 11) I decided I would run a mile each day
leading up to the event in order to prepare for it. I’ve just
never stopped.
There are many reasons why I love running, but
the number one reason is probably that it offers a very
immediate connection to a more elemental, primal mode of
existence. In general, most humans have moved away from
this movement-based existence in the modern world, but
for me, re-connecting to that on a daily basis is necessary
for my happiness.
Q You love running in Colorado. Would that be your
favourite place to run in the world, and why?
A I think it is probably my favourite place to run in
You definitely have
to be a committed
person to run in
Singapore’s hot,
humid climate and
cityscapes.
Q You make a reference to Kurt Vonnegut in
your blogspot. Who has inspired you most in
your running career, be it a literary figure or
anyone at all?
A I appreciate this question. My running
life and my intellectual life are pretty
inextricably linked, and I think I am
motivated and inspired more in my running life by ideas
and philosophical ideals than I am by nearly any athletic
performer or performance. So, I think the writings of
some of my favourite authors/thinkers – David Foster
Wallace, Edward Abbey, Jonathan Franzen, Jack Turner
all come to mind-influence my running most.
Most of my inspiration comes from the notions
of living authentically, with more awareness and
compassion. Running in the mountains helps me with
all of that. Beyond that, I am probably most inspired
by pioneering mountain athletes such as Reinhold
Messner, Bruno Brunod, and Ueli Steck – guys who
pushed (and are pushing) the limits of speed in the
mountains.

Our Peeps
Workmates
and
Soulmates
Some people are married to their jobs, but
Aidah and Faizal are married because of
their jobs. They found love some 12 years
ago, while working at Jurong Point.
Aidah and Faizal sitting pretty at the spot where they started courting 12 years ago
“I don’t know what happened…” said Faizal, with a trace
of genuine bewilderment. “Maybe it was God’s will, I
always seemed to bump into her on dates,” recalled Faizal.
“I always thought he was changing partners because I
always saw him with a different girl,” added Aidah.
The turning point came after an accidental encounter
at a club. The co-workers got to talking. “I don’t have a
girlfriend, you don’t have a boyfriend. Since we always
quarrel, why don’t we give it a try?” Faizal recalls saying.
Things moved on rapidly from there. Faizal went and
shattered every misconception Aidah had entertained about
him. A loving and attentive boyfriend, he would always
send her home on his bike even if his shift finished earlier
than hers. Love happened, marriage followed.
As Faizal put it, “The company has always been fair
to me, so I feel that I must be fair to the company.” Both
Faizal and Aidah gratefully acknowledged the career
path that Jurong Point has laid out for each of them, and
expressed a sense of pride in the phenomenal growth that
they have witnessed in the mall.
“As Jurong Point has grown, so have our job scopes and
responsibilities. We grow together,” remarked Aidah.
As for their working styles, it’s clear that both Aidah
and Faizal treat their staff like family and friends, choosing
to cooperate together knowing that each person will pull his
or her own weight, rather than pulling rank.
For Faizal, satisfaction is “when you can settle something
as fast as possible, without wasting funds”. For Aidah,
satisfaction stems
from “being able to
calm an unhappy
customer and end it
nicely – that’s a happy
day for me!”
Faizal at work in the Control Room
Even though we travel
around and go window
shopping, we always seem
to end up at Jurong Point.
BEGINNING… AND ENDING UP AT JURONG POINT
Since Aidah and Faizal live across the road from Jurong
Point, less than a 10-minute walk away, they spend a lot
of their time after hours at the mall. “With FairPrice open
24 hours a day, you can get everything you want here, any
time of the day or night,” said Aidah. ”Even though we
travel around and go window shopping, we always seem to
end up at Jurong Point,” added Faizal.
And there you have it. A love story that began at Jurong
Point, and always ‘ends up’ happily, over and over again, at
Jurong Point.
How many other love stories have begun and developed
into ‘happily ever after’ endings at Jurong Point? If you
know of one – maybe it’s your own, perhaps it’s the
story of another couple you know – please email us at
AN UNLIKELY COUPLE
Aidah is a vivacious Customer Service
Officer and Team Leader with seven staff
under her care. Faizal is a handsome
Maintenance Supervisor with a team
of 11 that reports to him. Both Faizal
and Aidah have been working at Jurong
Point since 1999 and 2001 respectively. Twelve years later,
they are happily married with a little girl of five, and still
love working at Jurong Point. Their funny love story warms
the heart.
At first, Faizal and Aidah were not interested in each
other. In fact, Faizal was so disinterested that he gladly
passed her phone number to an infatuated friend who
bugged and begged him for an introduction to the colleague
that left him cold. Soon, disinterest turned into dislike.
“I didn’t quite like her,” said Faizal.
“I also didn’t like him,” piped up Aidah.
The company has always
been fair to me, so I feel
that I must be fair to the
company.
“He went from my enemy to my lover… and
it wouldn’t have happened if not for Jurong
Point,” summed up Aidah.
“My enemy is my lover. She has to be mean
to me sometimes, otherwise there would be
no honest communication,” added Faizal.
Faizal recalled the Malay saying that their colleagues
used to say, “Selalu gaduh nanti satu hari kawin,” recalled
Faizal. In English? “You quarrel every day, you’ll end up in
marriage.” How ever did they know?
LOVING THEIR WORK
It seems that Faizal and Aidah are married to their jobs as
well as to each other. Even when not on a shift, Faizal is
on call around the clock, problem-solving and advising his
colleagues. Far from resenting it, Aidah understands and
shares his commitment, never hesitating to help a colleague
when a tricky situation arises, on duty or not.
