Women Enterprise Workz, aka
WEworkz, is the brainchild
of the mayor of South West
District, Dr Amy Khor. Started
in 2008, it provides sewing
training and job opportunities
for women unable to work
full-time. From sewing, they
reap extra income for their
families and a priceless sense of
self-worth and independence.
TO MARKET, TO MARKET
The majority of WEworkz products are
targeted at corporations and community
partners who require personalised items
for their events such as door gifts.
Selected products are also currently sold at
Chinatown Social Enterprise, LEDworks
along Bukit Timah Road and pushcarts in
IKEA Tampines. Products are also sold at
various seasonal fairs and markets.
FOR MUMS AND MOTHER EARTH
Since WEworkz’s wares are made
from vinyl advertising banners and
decommissioned army uniforms, carbon
footprint and landfill are reduced by
recycling materials that would otherwise
be discarded.
Hey Doc,
Let’s Talk
About…
Chronic
Neck Pain
as heavy lifting or bad posture, obesity,
and past neck and spine injuries. It is also
associated with ageing, as our discs and
tissues dry up as we get older, making
them more susceptible to tears.
According to TCM belief, cervical
spondylosis can be the result of an
external invasion by wind, causing
impediment to the free flow of our
channels and vessels.
NIGHT AND DAY PREVENTION
To prevent cervical spondylosis, there are
a few simple preventive measures you can
weave into your daily life. For example,
avoid carrying heavy items and staying
in a fixed position for a long time. Simple
stretching and neck exercises will aid in
alleviating pressure. Also, avoid direct
contact with wind from air-conditioning or
fans, and keep warm.
At night, ensure that your pillows are
of the right height, or about the size of
your clenched fist. In general, avoid eating
salty food.
WHICH IS BEST, EAST OR WEST?
Western doctors usually treat cervical
spondylosis with muscle relaxants,
painkillers, steroids or anesthetic
injections. While these medications may
temporarily ease discomfort, long-term
reliance on them may incur undesirable
side effects. In some cases, surgery may
even be recommended.
From a TCM perspective, 70-80% of
cervical spondylosis cases can be treated
effectively without surgery. Considered
to be a disorder of meridians at the neck
and arms, the problem is rooted in an
imbalance in the channels through which
our body’s energy or qi flows. Therefore,
treatment revolves around improving
blood circulation, loosening the muscles
that restrict movement, and restoring
muscles’ elasticity.
TCM REMEDIES
These TCM remedies can relieve cervical
spondylosis:
Herbal medications
These balance our yin and yang energies,
improve blood circulation and serve as a
natural painkiller.
Tui Na massage
This helps relieve pain, regain flexibility
and improve muscle control by focusing
on pressure points.
Acupuncture treatments
This rapidly provides an analgesic and
anti-inflammatory result, and aids in
regulating energy flow that leads to an
overall improvement in the condition.
Cupping and Gua Sha
These strengthen the body’s meridians and
improve blood and energy flow.
Physiotherapy
A range of movement exercises on the
neck helps regain flexibility and reduce
joint and muscle tension. Corrective
actions can decelerate the degenerating
process and prevent future recurrence.
Most importantly, these treatments
seldom if ever produce side effects.
No doubt it’s one of the reasons why a
growing number of neck pain sufferers are
turning to TCM.
Cervical spondylosis, also
known as neck arthritis,
describes wear and tear of the
cervical vertebrae and discs.
A common cause of chronic
neck pain as we age, it is on
the rise among the young due
to poor posture. Physician Liu
Zhi Ling of Yong Kang TCM
gives us a heads-up on this
pain in the neck.
WHAT, WHEN,
WHY
Symptoms of
cervical spondylosis
often develop
slowly, may worsen
suddenly or come and
go. Common symptoms
include stiff shoulders or
shoulder aches, headaches,
migraines and giddiness,
numbness and pain in the arms
and fingers. Less common
symptoms include numbness of
the face, chest tightness, loss of
appetite, and loss of balance due
to a sudden loss of strength in
the legs.
Cervical spondylosis can be
caused by occupational strain such
A Great Ride,
and a Bride,
for Ari
When Ariathiran, Ari for short, started work
as a Housekeeper at Jurong Point five years
ago, he never imagined where his job would
take him. Today, he is a Housekeeping
Supervisor with a team of 22 under him, and
a lovely fiancée called Shaleni by his side.
EMBRACING COMPLAINTS
Ari supervises a team of 22 housekeeping staff, who are
responsible for cleaning the mall, including the outside areas
and the car park. His colleagues hail from all races and are
an equal mix of male and female, young and old. The team
covers two shifts – Shift A starts in the morning at 8am and
finishes at 4.30pm; Shift B stretches from 1pm to 10.15pm.
A key part of Ari’s job is to ensure cleanliness in the
mall. Shoppers may
feel inconvenienced
in the morning,
between 8am and
9am, when his team
are cleaning the
toilets. Signs are put in place as a safety measure, to avoid
slips on wet floors. However, when shoppers voice their
urgent need to answer the call of nature, Ari’s staff allows
them to enter at their own risk after verbally cautioning them.
Surprisingly, Ari loves complaints. “I don’t see
complaints in a negative light, I see them as a valuable source
of information. If we don’t know what we are doing wrong,
we can’t fix it,” said Ari, philosophically.
WE ARE FAMILY
Ari holds a team meeting after 5pm daily to air grievances
and thrash out problems. “We discuss our days’ work – what
went wrong and what went right. We share information like a
family around a dinner table,” said Ari.
Speaking of family, Ari compared the Jurong Point
Management to loving parents who took him under their
wing. “Since I’ve started working at Jurong Point, I’ve
gone from a Cleaner to a Housekeeping Supervisor. Here,
everyone gets a chance. When the Management recognises
your capabilities, they will encourage and promote you. Like
loving parents, they support your growth as an individual,”
said Ari.
AMOUR IN THE MALL
Somewhat shyly, Ari informed us that he is engaged to a
lady he met on the job. At dinnertime one evening, a pretty
Indian girl asked him for directions. From that day on, she
would make it a point to look out for him in the mall. As
soon as he met her, he felt a sense of déjà-vu. Ari recalled,
“I felt as if I remembered her from somewhere.”
One thing led to another and romance blossomed. After
three years of dating, the couple finally worked out the
reason for the sense of familiarity. Shaleni is, in fact, his
distant relative. Jurong Point may be a big mall, but the
world is indeed small.
On Jurong Point, Ari enthused, “It’s an amazing
shopping centre. Everything you need, you can find here at
Jurong Point.” In Ari’s case, that includes love.
