Principal’s Newsletter
Dear Parents
On behalf of the Kelston Girls’ College Board of Trustees, and staff of
Kelston Girls’ College, I extend our deepest sympathy to everyone who has
been affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Samoa and Tonga and the
typhoon in the Philippines. At Kelston Girls we are at present planning a
fundraising drive to help victims of the disaster.
We celebrated many successes in Term 3, sporting, cultural and academic.
This term, in the next 3 weeks, the focus is on preparing seniors for their external examinations.
They completed mocks at the end of Term 3. These exams have been marked, the
reports written and they will be posted to parents this week.
If you have any concerns, please contact your daughter’s level Dean in the first instance:
New Zealand Curriculum
You will have read about the introduction of the New Zealand Curriculum. The NZC is
probably the most important document written about Student Learning for 40 years or more.
If you wish to find out more, go on line at: WWW.minedu.govt.nz
Schools are being given greater autonomy over teaching and learning for their students.
At Kelston Girls College, the Board has prioritised literacy and numeracy at all levels.
Three years ago, by introducing Te Kotahitanga to the school , they signalled their desire to
see all teachers develop pedagogically to have a student and enquiry based focus and a recognition
of the cultures of students.
The NZC has set an expectation that lessons should include Key Competencies, values and
principles and should not be content driven. A significant feature is personalising learning.
This year we have undertaken comprehensive surveys at Years 9 and 10 to find out what
helps our students learn best. We have also surveyed teachers.
I wish to thank Mrs Stone who has led the enquiry and is reporting results to teachers and
students at present.
We have introduced the Flexi class at Year 10 to assist students improve literacy and
numeracy skills. This class is as a result of the surveys and is designed to meet the learning
needs of students and help them accept responsibility for their learning.

Art West ‘09
This weekend we have held a successful exhibition of West
Auckland artists’ work. 95 artists exhibited. Despite the inclement
weather we had a steady stream of visitors on Saturday
and Sunday. The school’s library will benefit from this
fund raiser.
I wish to thank Trish Martin who led a small team of helpers, in particular, Ginny Knight
Williams, Sylvia Rechsteiner, Glenn Brayshaw and Heather Peach.
I also wish to acknowledge the Waitakere City Council who provided a seeding grant of
$2,000. The event is a biennial event.
Senior Prize Giving
On Tuesday 10 November at 7.00 pm we will celebrate the academic success of senior
students. I extend a cordial invitation to parents of all senior students to join us on this
happy occasion. Year 13 students will also receive their Graduation
Certificates.
