February 2010
Principal’s Newsletter
Dear Parents
Welcome to Term 1 which already is disappearing at a rapid rate!
The Swim carnival and Athletic Sports were well participated by our young women. It
was truly pleasing to see so many Year 9 students participating in both events.
Teachers and tutors are busy training culture groups for Polyfest which begins with a
powhiri on Wednesday 17 March and concludes on Saturday 20 March.
Survey
It was a pleasure to welcome so many parents to the powhiri for new students on the first day of
school. Because we are continuously looking at ways to improve how we do things at Kelston
Girls, I am seeking parents advice by including a survey which I hope that many of you will complete
and return to the School Office by the end of Term 1. A copy of the survey will be on our website
as well.
Open Saturday
During the summer holidays all families received a booklet providing advice and guidance for parents
and students. Included in the booklet are two important dates:
Monday 22 March
School Closed.
Saturday 27 March
Open day
You will shortly receive more details on this event.
School Uniform
In these difficult economic times, I wish to thank parents for making every effort to have their
daughters in correct uniform. The second hand uniform shop still has a good selection of uniform. It
is open every Monday from 10.30 to 11.30 am and on Wednesday and Friday before school. Please
make time to see me should you need to seek Hardship assistance.
Ambassadors for Kelston Girls’ College
It is a privilege for young women to represent Kelston Girls’ College, our Culture groups, in our
sports teams, our debating teams and the many events that occur through the year. Participants are
expected to observe high standards of behaviour and to observe school rules at all times, both at
school and outside school. Failure to do so means that the student will be removed from the team or
event.
Welcome
I wish to welcome the following people to our staff.
Peter Kapua Sports Coordinator
Francois Coetzee acting Assistant HOF PE/Health
HEALTH AND SAFETY
The Youth 2000 and Youth 2007 surveys are the most comprehensive surveys done on the health of New
Zealand adolescents.
This summary of the findings of the most recent survey make interesting reading for teachers and parents alike.
It is attached.
HEALTH CENTRE
Cervical cancer immunisation available to girls again in 2010
Public health nurses will be back in schools offering free HPV immunisation to girls this year.
More than 99 percent of cervical cancer is linked to an HPV infection, and this year alone about
60 New Zealand women will lose their lives to this cancer.
Girls who missed out on immunisation last year will have another opportunity to be immunised at school this
year.
2010 will be the last year of the schoolbased programme for girls in school year 9 and above. From 2011 onwards
the HPV vaccine will only be available to girls in school year eight, at participating schools.
The benefits of the HPV immunisation programme will become evident over time, as lower rates of HPV infection
and abnormal cervical changes are seen.
More information about the HPV immunisation programme is available from
www.cervicalcancervaccine.govt.nz or 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863).
CAREERS CORNER
My name is Liz Morris, I am the Careers Adviser at Kelston Girls College. In each newsletter I
will be letting you know about events coming up or useful information that you and your daughter
may find helpful.
For our seniors year 11- 13 who are considering university or college courses there are a 3 main
points
1/ They need to be aiming for 80 credits at level 1, 2 and 3
2/ It is about the QUALITY not QUANTITY of credits
Colleges and universities look at the quality of these 80 credits, have they achieved some merits
and excellences. Also they look at the Year 12 results
3/ Each university has different entry requirements –your daughter if in Year 11, 12 or 13
should come and get a booklet from the university she is interested in and find out the entry
qualifications. Some courses require certain subjects at Level 2 & Level 3.
All courses require level 2 = 4 reading and 4 writing credits and 14 Level 1 or above numeracy
credits (maths) PLUS
They require 2 or more APPROVED subjects (list available in academic booklet your daughter
would have been given from school or from careers department), Auckland University is slightly
different as they have a scoring system where you only can gain points from approved subjects,
so generally you need at least 3 approved subjects to even consider applying and for some hard
to enter courses like Health Science you need to be doing 4 or more approved subjects and as
many science subjects as possible.
If your daughter would like to see me she can come and make an appointment during form time,
my office is at the end of F block and if you would like to talk to me my direct line number is
