Secondary Transformation Team
Transforming Teaching & Learning in Kent: Education
Nurturing Creative & Autonomous Learners:
The Kent Secondary Strategy – Phase 2
To transform learning
To develop capacity and structures
To place schools at the heart of their communities
To design and develop the learning infrastructure
Nurturing Creative & Autonomous Learners:
The Kent Secondary Strategy – Phase 2
“Kent is in the forefront of local authorities developing
Academies and the first to act as a sponsor. We plan to
have a network of Academies throughout Kent, starting
in areas of deprivation, linked to the family of schools in
the area. Three submission have progressed to either
feasibility or implementation stages.”
2009: 10 Academies open in Kent
Why Change?
What we are doing now does not meet the needs of
50% young people.
Many adult competences are developed after or
outside school e.g. reflection; project management; real
teamwork; real leadership; etc.
We know about multiple intelligences, but what are
schools really doing with the knowledge?
Current education was designed for a national
manufacturing economy… but we live in a rapidly
changing, global knowledge economy
Why Change?
We know that humans have preferred ways of
collecting information (visual; auditory; kinaesthetic),
but…
Why flog yourself every year to improve GCSEs by
another 2%? Be radical!
In short, the world has changed

“Developing a really embedded educational vision
takes 18 months”
Implementing it
- ensuring the words fit the music –
takes much longer

The Educational Process
We will work with the main sponsor to:
Inform them of the local educational perspective and
Kent’s Secondary strategy
Assist with the visioning process to ensure that the
education they plan to provide is fit for the 21 st century
By providing development opportunities
Advising the design group to ensure that emerging designs
represent the educational aspirations of the sponsor, KCC,
the area and the individual establishment
Assist with change management
