Ava.' Syrian, or Syriam, is a village (once a large<br />

town) nearly opposite Rangoon across the Pegu<br />

Eiver, <strong>and</strong> one would think a scientific writer seven<br />

years ago might be aware that rubies were not<br />

found in <strong>British</strong> <strong>Burma</strong>.<br />

' Kyat-pen ' (query,<br />

Capelan?'), whence the rubies are obtained, is situated<br />

near Momiet, about seventy miles south <strong>of</strong><br />

Bamaw, or Bhamo, as we have named it.<br />

Coal <strong>of</strong>^ an inferior <strong>and</strong> almost useless kind is<br />

fomid-raiher extensively ihronghout the Tenasserim<br />

Province, <strong>and</strong> sanguiae expectations have been<br />

seTgraL times raised <strong>of</strong> the discovery <strong>of</strong> beds <strong>of</strong> a<br />

valuable_jguality. When that fortunate event<br />

shall happen, we may hope to see the hidden mineral<br />

wealth <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burma</strong> developed, <strong>and</strong> the former ideas<br />

respecting it to some extent at least realised.
