Brain Surgery
Helps Diagnose
Lung Cancer Patient
For weeks, Noreen Way tried to fight
off dull headaches that never seemed
to go away. Suspecting she had sinus
troubles, the 68-year-old resident of
Manahawkin visited her primary care
physician. But when prescription sinus
medication didn’t control the problem,
Noreen was referred to a neurologist
at Southern Ocean Medical Center for
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
There, she learned the devastating
cause of her headaches.
“My neurologist, Dr. [Tommasina]
Papa-Rugino, explained that I had a
brain tumor. It had metastasized from
somewhere else,” Noreen says.
A second, full-body MRI showed
that the cancerous tumor on Noreen’s
cerebellum, the area of the brain at
the back of the head, had spread
from her lungs. She was diagnosed
with stage 4 lung cancer.
“I was in shock. My only symptom
was a slight shortness of breath,
which I thought was due to my
asthma,” Noreen recalls. “My husband
and I had just come back from Europe
where we traveled all over without
problems. I had no idea I
had cancer.”
Noreen Way enjoys cooking at home
and tending to her garden and koi
pond. She and her husband George
will celebrate their 49th wedding
anniversary in June.
