Welcome to the North Pennines – a
stunning and varied landscape of open moors,
delightful dales, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful
woods, close knit communities, glorious waterfalls,
fantastic birds, stone-built villages, an intriguing
industrial past, distinctive plants and much more.
At almost 2000 square kilometres, the North
Pennines stretches across a large area and is one
of the most peaceful and unspoilt places in
England. In 2003 the North Pennines Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) became
Britain’s first European Geopark, a UNESCO
endorsed status reflecting our world-class
geological heritage. In 2004 the North Pennines
became a founding member of the UNESCO
Global Geoparks Network.
