At almost 2000 square kilometres, <strong>the</strong> North<br />

Penn<strong>in</strong>es stretches across a large area <strong>and</strong> is one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> most peaceful <strong>and</strong> unspoilt places <strong>in</strong><br />

Engl<strong>and</strong>. In 2003 <strong>the</strong> North Penn<strong>in</strong>es Area of<br />

Outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g Natural Beauty (AONB) became<br />

Brita<strong>in</strong>’s first European Geopark, a UNESCO<br />

endorsed status reflect<strong>in</strong>g our world-class<br />

geological heritage. In 2004 <strong>the</strong> North Penn<strong>in</strong>es<br />

became a found<strong>in</strong>g member of <strong>the</strong> UNESCO<br />

Global Geoparks Network.<br />
