Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture started
life as Kingston School of Art in the 1890s. Currently ranking in
the top 10 art and design schools in the UK, we now enjoy an
international reputation.
Our focus is that of blending traditional craft with the latest
technology. We are able to offer you the Art School Experience, a
range of short courses developed and taught by our expert staff
delivered on weekends, evenings and during the summer.
Whether for professional development or leisure, our vast
portfolio of courses will provide you with the perfect way to spend
your spare time. Courses take place at the Knights Park Campus
in Kingston, which offers outstanding facilities and a great
environment to study.
You can socialise and discuss projects with other students in the
wonderful surroundings of the Hogsmill River.
EVENING
Adobe InDesign: An Introduction
16th April 2013 - 14th May 2013
This course is aimed at those who are either new
to, or unfamiliar with, the design package Adobe
InDesign, but are keen to develop their ideas using
this application.
Drawing for Beginners
Please check website for dates
This introductory course is for people who have
very little experience of drawing. All ages are
welcomed, to work together, with introductions to
a variety of techniques, materials and applications.
Drawing On
15th April 2013 - 13th May 2013
Drawing On complements the Drawing for
Beginners course, but can be taken as a separate
module which allows you to develop your skills
of observation and broaden your experience of
media, materials and approaches to drawing.
Life Drawing: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
16th April 2013 - 14th May 2013
17th April 2013 - 15th May 2013
These life drawing classes are for students of
all abilities, from beginner to professional.
Painting in Oils and Acrylics
21st February 2013 - 21st March 2013
This 5 week evening class is for both beginners
and learners with experience, who wish to broaden
their knowledge and painting techniques.

These 10-week evening course and three day
intensive courses are aimed at students who
intend to apply for a Foundation course. The
teaching focuses on the major areas that should
be represented in an applicant’s folder and is
based in the Foundation Department here at
Kingston University.
Watercolour Painting
19th February 2013 - 19th March 2013
This course is for those wanting to learn or
improve their watercolour painting techniques.
Students will develop their watercolour skills
through a mixture of demonstration, practice
and discussion.

SUMMER
Bronze Casting and Sculpture
29th August 2013 - 6th September 2013
An opportunity to learn the traditional method of
bronze casting led by Sculptor Richard Trupp.
The course includes an introduction to the
bronze casting ‘lost wax’ process with students
transforming their wax creations into permanent
bronze sculptures.
Creative London: exploring London Design Festival
19th September 2013 - 21st September 2013
Creative London visits a selection of the most
interesting and stimulating exhibitions and
events during the London Design Festival. Each
day will focus on a different area and give you
the opportunity to meet leading designers and
curators at top galleries and exhibitions.
Design with Scents - Smell the World Differently
8th July 2013 - 12th July 2013
A highly interactive 5-day workshop designed for
students from the fields of fashion, design, art and
architecture, professionals and perfume lovers.
They will discover how to use scent as a powerful
tool to enhance their projects.
Digital Photography & Imaging (Intensive)
29th July 2013 - 2nd August 2013
This intensive course provides an exciting
introduction to digital photography and imaging.
You will learn the basics of composition, alongside
an intensive course in Adobe Photoshop.
Drafting & Model Making for Film/TV
9th September 2013 - 13th September 2013
This week long course is aimed at those who
would like to apply for work in television art
departments, but who lack the technical skills.
The course includes: learning techniques;
surveying a site; converting information to scale
drawings; creating 3D models.
Fashion Design Summer School
12th August 2013 - 16th August 2013
This course is an introduction to fashion
design, particularly aimed at students who are
thinking of applying to a Foundation course.
Teaching includes: garment structures and
techniques; life-style boards, observing and
recording; deconstruction, reconstruction; design
development; fashion Illustration.
Fashion Design 6-week Workshop
8th July 2013 - 16th August 2013
This unique course is designed to give participants
an insight into the professional world of fashion
design and covers: pattern cutting; professional
sewing techniques; research development; studio
visits; and garment production.
Figure Drawing for Fashion
9th September 2013 - 12th September 2013
This course is ideally suited for those from the
field of fashion, but also perfect for anyone with a
passion for drawing from life.
Foundation Art & Design Summer School
5th August 2013 - 9th August 2013
This course in an art school environment, gives
you a great taster of Kingston’s Foundation
Diploma in Art and Design. The course provides a
insight into experimental drawing, illustration, 3D
design, graphic design.
Graphic Design Summer School
12th August 2013 - 16th August 2013
This course is an introduction to graphic design,
particularly aimed at those who are thinking of
making an application for a university place.
The course covers: communicating through
mark-making; typography; concepts; research.
Interior Design Summer School
12th August 2013 - 16th August 2013
This course consists of a wide range of projects
including creating working environments, designs
for exhibitions, film and television and the leisure
and entertainment market. The course will also
include a day of site visits in Central London.
Observational Drawing
29th July 2013 - 2nd August 2013
This course will use a mixture of life drawing, still
life and location drawing sessions to develop
observational, analytical and versatile drawing
skills and explore mark making and mixed media.
Painting in Oils and Acrylics
5th August 2013 - 9th August 2013
This painting class is for those wishing to: learn
painting techniques; understand colour and the
palette; and how to create mood and atmosphere,
composition, line and tone in oils and acrylics.
Pattern Cutting Workshop
8th July 2013 - 19th July 2013
During this 2 week course, you will be instructed
on the rudiments of pattern cutting. It is designed
to give you a grounding in how to produce a
fully formed garment using all the facilities and
expertise of our prestigious fashion department.
Stone & Marble Carving
29th August 2013 - 6th September 2013
Based in the fine art sculpture workshops at
Knights Park, this is an intensive course teaching
the basic principles and techniques of stone and
marble carving.

WEEKEND
Weekend Art School courses run over 6 weeks
starting on Saturday 13 April 2013 and finish on
Saturday 18 May 2013. They are held from 10am
to 1pm and lunch is included.
Adobe Photoshop: An Introduction
This course is an introduction to Adobe
Photoshop, to enable participants to gain a
competent understanding of the programme’s
tools and features.
Bookbinding: An Introduction
Using Eastern methods of bookbinding as direct
inspiration, this short course will guide participants
on how to make a handmade sewn-bound book.
Digital Photography: An Introduction
This course is designed for participants with no
experience in photography who would like to learn
how to use a Digital SLR camera and get the most
out of it.
Exploring London’s Art Museums
This course will provide an introduction to the
wonderful world of museums and galleries in
London through a range of visits and lectures.
Fashion: An Introduction
This course is suitable for people who have
a passion for fashion and wish to understand
what a fashion designer does. The course is
taught through a series of presentations, group
discussions, theoretical and visual research.
Fashion Illustration
The aim of the course is to introduce you to
the specialist area of fashion illustration and
will concentrate on learning to interpret fashion
through the medium of illustration.
Fashion Make-up: How to Apply Professionally
For anyone who would like to learn a variety of
techniques and skills on how to apply make-up,
including an introduction to brushes, brands and
professional application.
Interior Design/Decoration: An Introduction
This course is designed for beginners and for
those that have some experience and wish to learn
the principles and process behind a professional
interior design/decoration project.
Life Drawing: Improve your skills
Whether a beginner or slightly more experienced,
participants will be encouraged to experiment with
various drawing mediums, using colour and line to
explore ways of depicting depth and shade.
Machine Knitting: An Introduction
On the course you will learn basic single bed
machine knitting techniques. You will work with
colour and pattern as well as stitch techniques.
Painting: Improve your Skills
Whether a beginner or slightly more experienced,
this intensive programme encourages selfdevelopment
through experimentation with various
painting mediums and exploration of techniques
using colour and line to depict depth and shade.
Screenprinting: An Introduction
This course is an intense introduction to
screenprint and stencil processes. The course
will take place in our professionally equipped
screenprint studios.
The Real Downtown Abbey:
Historic Houses and Palaces of Surrey
This course looks at Surrey’s historic past through
the rich architecture, interiors, collections and uses
of its palatial and stately residences.
Woodworking: An Introduction
On this course you will learn how to use basic
woodworking tools in order to make a wood based
item. Our staff will guide you through each stage in
the progression of making your wood based item
and teach you skills that you will be able to apply
to any wood working project.
Illustration: An Introduction
On this course you will learn exciting new imagemaking
techniques, both hand-drawn and digital,
and will be encouraged to develop a strong
personal visual language.
