life as <strong>Kingston</strong> School of Art in the 1890s. Currently ranking in<br />
the top 10 art and design schools in the UK, we now enjoy an<br />
international reputation.<br />
Our focus is that of blending traditional craft with the latest<br />
technology. We are able to offer you the Art School Experience, a<br />
range of short courses developed and taught by our expert staff<br />
delivered on weekends, evenings and during the summer.<br />
Whether for professional development or leisure, our vast<br />
portfolio of courses will provide you with the perfect way to spend<br />
your spare time. Courses take place at the Knights Park Campus<br />
in <strong>Kingston</strong>, which offers outstanding facilities and a great<br />
environment to study.<br />
You can socialise and discuss projects with other students in the<br />
wonderful surroundings of the Hogsmill River.<br />
EVENING<br />
Adobe InDesign: An Introduction<br />
16th April 2013 - 14th May 2013<br />
This course is aimed at those who are either new<br />
to, or unfamiliar with, the design package Adobe<br />
InDesign, but are keen to develop their ideas using<br />
this application.<br />
Drawing for Beginners<br />
Please check website for dates<br />
This introductory course is for people who have<br />
very little experience of drawing. All ages are<br />
welcomed, to work together, with introductions to<br />
a variety of techniques, materials and applications.<br />
Drawing On<br />
15th April 2013 - 13th May 2013<br />
Drawing On complements the Drawing for<br />
Beginners course, but can be taken as a separate<br />
module which allows you to develop your skills<br />
of observation and broaden your experience of<br />
media, materials and approaches to drawing.<br />
Life Drawing: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings<br />
16th April 2013 - 14th May 2013<br />
17th April 2013 - 15th May 2013<br />
These life drawing classes are for students of<br />
all abilities, from beginner to professional.<br />
Painting in Oils and Acrylics<br />
21st February 2013 - 21st March 2013<br />
This 5 week evening class is for both beginners<br />
and learners with experience, who wish to broaden<br />
their knowledge and painting techniques.<br />
Portfolio Preparation<br />

These 10-week evening course and three day<br />
intensive courses are aimed at students who<br />
intend to apply for a Foundation course. The<br />
teaching focuses on the major areas that should<br />
be represented in an applicant’s folder and is<br />
based in the Foundation Department here at<br />
<strong>Kingston</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Watercolour Painting<br />
19th February 2013 - 19th March 2013<br />
This course is for those wanting to learn or<br />
improve their watercolour painting techniques.<br />
Students will develop their watercolour skills<br />
through a mixture of demonstration, practice<br />
and discussion.
SUMMER<br />
Bronze Casting and Sculpture<br />
29th August 2013 - 6th September 2013<br />
An opportunity to learn the traditional method of<br />
bronze casting led by Sculptor Richard Trupp.<br />
The course includes an introduction to the<br />
bronze casting ‘lost wax’ process with students<br />
transforming their wax creations into permanent<br />
bronze sculptures.<br />
Creative London: exploring London Design Festival<br />
19th September 2013 - 21st September 2013<br />
Creative London visits a selection of the most<br />
interesting and stimulating exhibitions and<br />
events during the London Design Festival. Each<br />
day will focus on a different area and give you<br />
the opportunity to meet leading designers and<br />
curators at top galleries and exhibitions.<br />
Design with Scents - Smell the World Differently<br />
8th July 2013 - 12th July 2013<br />
A highly interactive 5-day workshop designed for<br />
students from the fields of fashion, design, art and<br />
architecture, professionals and perfume lovers.<br />
They will discover how to use scent as a powerful<br />
tool to enhance their projects.<br />
Digital Photography & Imaging (Intensive)<br />
29th July 2013 - 2nd August 2013<br />
This intensive course provides an exciting<br />
introduction to digital photography and imaging.<br />
You will learn the basics of composition, alongside<br />
an intensive course in Adobe Photoshop.<br />
Drafting & Model Making for Film/TV<br />
9th September 2013 - 13th September 2013<br />
This week long course is aimed at those who<br />
would like to apply for work in television art<br />
departments, but who lack the technical skills.<br />
The course includes: learning techniques;<br />
surveying a site; converting information to scale<br />
drawings; creating 3D models.<br />
Fashion Design Summer School<br />
12th August 2013 - 16th August 2013<br />
This course is an introduction to fashion<br />
design, particularly aimed at students who are<br />
thinking of applying to a Foundation course.<br />
Teaching includes: garment structures and<br />
techniques; life-style boards, observing and<br />
recording; deconstruction, reconstruction; design<br />
development; fashion Illustration.<br />
Fashion Design 6-week Workshop<br />
8th July 2013 - 16th August 2013<br />
This unique course is designed to give participants<br />
an insight into the professional world of fashion<br />
design and covers: pattern cutting; professional<br />
sewing techniques; research development; studio<br />
visits; and garment production.<br />
Figure Drawing for Fashion<br />
9th September 2013 - 12th September 2013<br />
This course is ideally suited for those from the<br />
field of fashion, but also perfect for anyone with a<br />
passion for drawing from life.<br />
Foundation Art & Design Summer School<br />
5th August 2013 - 9th August 2013<br />
This course in an art school environment, gives<br />
you a great taster of <strong>Kingston</strong>’s Foundation<br />
Diploma in Art and Design. The course provides a<br />
insight into experimental drawing, illustration, 3D<br />
design, graphic design.<br />
Graphic Design Summer School<br />
12th August 2013 - 16th August 2013<br />
This course is an introduction to graphic design,<br />
particularly aimed at those who are thinking of<br />
making an application for a university place.<br />
The course covers: communicating through<br />
mark-making; typography; concepts; research.<br />
Interior Design Summer School<br />
12th August 2013 - 16th August 2013<br />
This course consists of a wide range of projects<br />
including creating working environments, designs<br />
for exhibitions, film and television and the leisure<br />
and entertainment market. The course will also<br />
include a day of site visits in Central London.<br />
Observational Drawing<br />
29th July 2013 - 2nd August 2013<br />
This course will use a mixture of life drawing, still<br />
life and location drawing sessions to develop<br />
observational, analytical and versatile drawing<br />
skills and explore mark making and mixed media.<br />
Painting in Oils and Acrylics<br />
5th August 2013 - 9th August 2013<br />
This painting class is for those wishing to: learn<br />
painting techniques; understand colour and the<br />
palette; and how to create mood and atmosphere,<br />
composition, line and tone in oils and acrylics.<br />
Pattern Cutting Workshop<br />
8th July 2013 - 19th July 2013<br />
During this 2 week course, you will be instructed<br />
on the rudiments of pattern cutting. It is designed<br />
to give you a grounding in how to produce a<br />
fully formed garment using all the facilities and<br />
expertise of our prestigious fashion department.<br />
Stone & Marble Carving<br />
29th August 2013 - 6th September 2013<br />
Based in the fine art sculpture workshops at<br />
Knights Park, this is an intensive course teaching<br />
the basic principles and techniques of stone and<br />
marble carving.
WEEKEND<br />
Weekend Art School courses run over 6 weeks<br />
starting on Saturday 13 April 2013 and finish on<br />
Saturday 18 May 2013. They are held from 10am<br />
to 1pm and lunch is included.<br />
Adobe Photoshop: An Introduction<br />
This course is an introduction to Adobe<br />
Photoshop, to enable participants to gain a<br />
competent understanding of the programme’s<br />
tools and features.<br />
Bookbinding: An Introduction<br />
Using Eastern methods of bookbinding as direct<br />
inspiration, this short course will guide participants<br />
on how to make a handmade sewn-bound book.<br />
Digital Photography: An Introduction<br />
This course is designed for participants with no<br />
experience in photography who would like to learn<br />
how to use a Digital SLR camera and get the most<br />
out of it.<br />
Exploring London’s Art Museums<br />
This course will provide an introduction to the<br />
wonderful world of museums and galleries in<br />
London through a range of visits and lectures.<br />
Fashion: An Introduction<br />
This course is suitable for people who have<br />
a passion for fashion and wish to understand<br />
what a fashion designer does. The course is<br />
taught through a series of presentations, group<br />
discussions, theoretical and visual research.<br />
Fashion Illustration<br />
The aim of the course is to introduce you to<br />
the specialist area of fashion illustration and<br />
will concentrate on learning to interpret fashion<br />
through the medium of illustration.<br />
Fashion Make-up: How to Apply Professionally<br />
For anyone who would like to learn a variety of<br />
techniques and skills on how to apply make-up,<br />
including an introduction to brushes, brands and<br />
professional application.<br />
Interior Design/Decoration: An Introduction<br />
This course is designed for beginners and for<br />
those that have some experience and wish to learn<br />
the principles and process behind a professional<br />
interior design/decoration project.<br />
Life Drawing: Improve your skills<br />
Whether a beginner or slightly more experienced,<br />
participants will be encouraged to experiment with<br />
various drawing mediums, using colour and line to<br />
explore ways of depicting depth and shade.<br />
Machine Knitting: An Introduction<br />
On the course you will learn basic single bed<br />
machine knitting techniques. You will work with<br />
colour and pattern as well as stitch techniques.<br />
Painting: Improve your Skills<br />
Whether a beginner or slightly more experienced,<br />
this intensive programme encourages selfdevelopment<br />
through experimentation with various<br />
painting mediums and exploration of techniques<br />
using colour and line to depict depth and shade.<br />
Screenprinting: An Introduction<br />
This course is an intense introduction to<br />
screenprint and stencil processes. The course<br />
will take place in our professionally equipped<br />
screenprint studios.<br />
The Real Downtown Abbey:<br />
Historic Houses and Palaces of Surrey<br />
This course looks at Surrey’s historic past through<br />
the rich architecture, interiors, collections and uses<br />
of its palatial and stately residences.<br />
Woodworking: An Introduction<br />
On this course you will learn how to use basic<br />
woodworking tools in order to make a wood based<br />
item. Our staff will guide you through each stage in<br />
the progression of making your wood based item<br />
and teach you skills that you will be able to apply<br />
to any wood working project.<br />
Illustration: An Introduction<br />
On this course you will learn exciting new imagemaking<br />
techniques, both hand-drawn and digital,<br />
and will be encouraged to develop a strong<br />
personal visual language.<br />
