Who Rules the World?
The West
This season, we bring you an in-depth look at power structures
and how societies are organized. On Mondays, we turn to the West.
Civilization:
Is the West History?
Mondays at 8pm, beginning
September 26
Repeats Sundays at 5pm
Harvard historian Niall Ferguson takes on a big subject:
why the West has dominated the rest of the world – and
whether the days of Western ascendancy are coming to
an end. In this six-part series, Ferguson (host of Ascent of
Money) reveals what he considers to be the ‘killer apps’
of the West’s success – competition, science, property,
medicine, consumerism and work ethic. Ferguson’s conclusions
are surprising and provocative. He reveals that
while the killer apps have been ‘downloaded’ by the rest
of the world, in the process Western civilization has lost
faith in itself. And it is that loss of self-belief that poses
the biggest threat to its continued predominance.
In this five-part series, we journey to Japan, Bhutan, Cambodia, Nepal and Brunei to
understand the relationship between the people and their monarchs. To many, their
monarchy is an anachronism: an institution that hampers progress. To others it is
the heart and soul of their nation, part of their shared history and a guard against
the dangers of modernity. As a new era approaches, what happens to each of them
Japan’s royal wedding a noteworthy occasion
Like a recent regal event, the marriage of Michiko Shoda and Japan’s Crown Prince
Akihito in 1959 (photo, below) was particularly noteworthy due to the fact that she
was a commoner marrying into royalty. It was a long time coming for the Japanese
monarchy – founded in 660 BC, it is the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in
the world. The royal couple were enthroned as Emperor and Empress on November
12, 1990 at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo (cover photo). In both photos, Empress
Michiko wears juuni-hitoe, a 12-layered ceremonial kimono, and holds a fan made of
Armadillo
Tuesday, September 27 at 9pm
Repeats at midnight
Director Janus Metz captures the horror and adrenaline
of warfare in his harrowing documentary Armadillo.
Named after a military base in Afghanistan, the
film follows a platoon of Danish soldiers through a
six-month tour of duty. Metz reveals the bravado of
the young men, the boredom of daily routine, and the
brutal reality of war when the soldiers kill a group of
Taliban insurgents. Avoiding judgments for or against
the war, the film shows the soldiers struggling to maintain
their humanity in a world filled with violence.
Filmmaker captures reality of war in Afghanistan
After premiering at Cannes in 2010, where it won the International Critics’ Week
award, Janus Metz’ documentary Armadillo created a furor in Denmark. It stemmed
from a scene that shows the soldiers’ reactions after a deadly firefight with the
Taliban. The outcry resulted in the entire country furiously debating its role in
Afghanistan.
Metz, who was embedded with the platoon for six months while filming, says he
wasn’t out to expose the soldiers, but to show an honest depiction of their experiences.
Following the soldiers out to the frontlines, cameras rigged to helmets, Metz
and cinematographer Lars Skee risked their lives to get the story.
“In the early research for the project, when I first met the young soldiers, I was
surprised that the majority of those who had already been to war had a desire to return,”
says Metz. “Their experiences were violent and bloody, but they all talked with great
excitement about battle and about the strong bonds and feelings of unity with their
fellow soldiers.
“Everyday life at home seemed to have become boring in comparison with the intensity
of war. It seemed like an addiction. This puzzled me to the extent that I wanted to
try and put myself in the soldiers’ shoes. Why do they want to go to war? Is it to change
the world and make a difference? Is it excitement? Personal ambitions? Is it something
else… and how do these things affect each other as well as the conflict at large?”
The motivations of the soldiers and their actions may be hard for “outsiders” – those
who haven’t been on the battlefield – to understand, but in making the film, Metz gives
us an idea of what war is really like: how perceptions of right and wrong shift with the
brutality of the situation. Whether or not we can pass judgement is another question.
Family Portrait in Black and White
Tuesday, October 25 at 9:05pm
Repeats at midnight
Olga Nenya is a foster mother to sixteen black orphans in Ukraine
– where 99.9% of the population is white and where race does
matter. Forced to constantly defend themselves from racist neighbours
and skinheads, the children have to be on guard against the
society that surrounds them. Olga is a loving mother but she is
not Mother Teresa; she bears a closer resemblance to a platoon
leader. While Olga is on a crusade to save her children from an
unjust world, she is also determined to shape their future according
to her own, often limited vision.
Storyville forum comes through for filmmaker
When Vancouver-based filmmaker Julia Ivanova read an article about Olga
Nenya’s family in a Russian newspaper, she knew she wanted to make a
documentary about them. Growing up in the Soviet Union, Julia saw very
few mixed-race black children, and when she did, they were alone – none of
the other children would play with them.
“This always struck me as something really terrible,” she says. It wasn’t
racism, she explains, but rather a sense of unfamiliarity because the mixedrace
children were not often seen – they were in orphanages.
When Julia approached Olga about the film, she readily agreed to participate.
Filming began in 2008.
As with most independent productions, financing was a challenge. Julia
credits the Storyville pitching forum, presented by Knowledge Network at
the Vancouver International Film Festival, with helping them get the film Julia Ivanova and her brother, Boris Ivanov, the film’s producer.
They’ve worked together on numerous film projects.
made by connecting them with international commissioning editors. The film
has been very successful on the festival circuit – it won at Hot Docs and was
the only Canadian documentary screened at Sundance this year (and the only one made by a woman).
Julia is looking forward to the film reaching a wider audience. “I hope viewers will feel for the children and want to help them, either
individually or in general. Also I hope they will see that human beings are very complex, and that it is possible to love someone intensely
and also to cut off the possibilities for them, as Olga does to some of the children.”
Julia is now working on her next project, a documentary commissioned by Knowledge Network called High Five, about a BC couple’s
rollercoaster ride to adopt five Ukranian siblings.
Party Animals
Fridays at 10pm, beginning September 30
Repeats at 2am
Like most twenty-somethings, Scott, Danny, Ashika and Kirsty
spend much of their day worrying about love, sex, friendship and
paying the rent. Unlike most twenty-somethings, the rest of the
time they’re worrying about running the country... This new BBC
drama series presents Westminster from the ground up – the
young researchers and advisors shouldering huge responsibility in
a frantic, high-stakes world. It’s no wonder their personal lives are
so messy.
Meet the characters
Scott and Danny: (top photo) Sons of an ex-Labour MP, they have
politics in their blood. Lobbyist Scott is addicted to the adrenaline
of his job and lifestyle. Researcher Danny takes a quieter
approach, but despite his sharp intellect, he’s about to make a
mighty blunder.
Ashika: (centre photo, right) Ambitious and confident, Conservative
party member Ashika thinks she has everything – her career,
Kirsty: (bottom photo, right) Labour researcher Kirsty will do
anything to get to the top. But is she ready to deal with the
consequences?
Behind the scenes
If the makers of Party Animals have it right, the halls of Westminster
aren’t as stuffy as one might think. While the series isn’t
based on any real-life politicians, the production team worked
with Martin Bright, political editor of The New Statesman, to get
the inside scoop on London’s power elite. Bright put the team in
touch with journalists, lobbyists, MPs and researchers.
“Talking to insiders, it soon became clear that the political
world was as much about cliques, social alliances and sexual
intrigue as it was about running the country and policy-making
– in fact, the two are intrinsically linked, “ says producer Eleanor
Greene.
Although political themes are part of the series, the main
focus is on the characters – the young backroom staff of British
politics. “Through their eyes, we tried to capture the buzz of being
so close to power,” says executive producer Simon Heath. “In the
end, you don’t need an interest in politics to enjoy the series. It’s
a workplace like many others, but with its own special brand of
office gossip and competition.”
A Trip to Treasure
We chatted with Maureen Newton, winner of our Treasures of
England contest, about her prize, a 17-day tour of rural England in
early June. Maureen, a longtime Knowledge Partner, brought her
sister Barbara Gibbons-Smyth, and they had a marvellous time
visiting all the stately homes and castles. She shares with us some
of the highlights:
Favourite place: I really enjoyed Sissingshurst Castle, where Sackville
West lived and designed the most spectacular gardens. She was also
friends with Virginia Woolf, so there was interesting insight into that.
Most scenic area: For me, it was Yorkshire and the Lake District.
It’s just beautiful. Of course, that’s the area of Beatrix Potter, too, so
all the little shops have lovely Beatrix Potter things.
Best “Heartbeat” moment: We took a steam train to Goathland,
where they filmed the series. A whole bunch of us went into the
Goathland Arms, which is Aidensfield Arms in the show, and had a
beer and something to eat. I’m a fan, so that was neat.
Passion for learning inspires monthly gift
Like many young people, Alex
Batko is really tech-savvy. In
an online “tweet” he sent out
last February, he shared how
Michael Wood’s documentary
series The Story of India
finally led him to donate to
Knowledge.
“While watching the
doc, I recognized how
awesome it is to watch
a full program and not
be force-fed commercial
propaganda.”
Alex explains that Knowledge
is a place where he
knows he can feed his passion
for learning about the world.
“The internet is so insanely
massive, and the number of
things you can watch is so
overwhelming, often you don’t
even know where to begin.
Knowledge has super highquality
curation of programs
– it’s something you can trust.
I can turn on Knowledge and
learn about the origin of language
and botany and – I don’t
know – countless things about
earth and society and their
connections.”
Alex holds great admiration
for BC ethnographer
Wade Davis and is involved
in environmental initiatives,
including the fight to save
the Sacred Headwaters – the
source of the Nass, Skeena
and Stikine Rivers. His affinity
for the natural world stems,
perhaps, from his childhood in
the scenic and close-knit community
of Prince Rupert.
When it comes to charitable
giving, Alex follows his
own personal guideline of donating
no less than 1.2% of his
income to his favourite causes
– something he believes
everyone can afford to do.
His decision to be a monthly
donor is also very much a
conscious choice. “Knowledge
needs my money all the time.
And I want to know that I’m a
Partner all the time,” he says.
“I’m not just giving a donation
once, I’m supporting Knowledge
every month for as long
as it exists.”
Lifetime of hard work leads to lasting legacy
After decades of hard work,
good judgment and smart investments
– not to mention a
bit of luck – Sidney and Gladys
Sharman are now sharing
their wealth in a way that will
benefit others for generations
to come. Their generous gift
to the Knowledge Network
Endowment Fund still stands
as the largest ever private
donation to Knowledge.
Sidney is a born entrepreneur.
Raised in the slums of
London, he began washing out
bottles for the milkman at age
8 to earn a few shillings. A few
years later he quit school to
work for the milkman full time.
“I started working when
I was 13 years and 10
months old and I’ll be
90 in December, and I’m
still working!”
Living near the docks, he’d
always wanted to go to sea, so
in 1942 he joined the British
Merchant Navy. He started
down in the boiler room of the
Tucurinca, shoveling coal, and
eventually served five years on
six different ships.
When Sidney’s seafaring
days ended, he and Gladys
owned a successful taxi and
limousine service and a boarding
house. They immigrated to
Canada in the late 1950s, but
weren’t allowed to take money
out of the country, so they had
to start all over again. They
spent a few years in Oakville,
Ontario, then settled in Victoria,
where Sidney began to build
apartment buildings. They later
moved to Nanaimo, where he
continued to buy and subdivide
land and build apartments. In
1975, he bought 25 acres of
land with a few mobile homes
on it and developed it into a 147
mobile home park, where he
still works.
Sidney says he’s always
known the value of a dollar.
He’s only paid interest for
a purchase once – when he
bought his first bike as a boy
– and vowed he never would
again. He doesn’t really like to
spend money either, although
he doesn’t mind giving it away
to worthy causes. Along with
the gift to Knowledge, the
The Merchant Navy ship British Diligence. Sidney served on it for 1 1 / 2 years.
Sharmans have made very
significant donations to St.
John’s Ambulance, the Nursing
program at Vancouver
Island University, and Victoria
Foundation, among others.
Sidney explains that they’d
rather choose themselves
where their money goes,
rather than handing it over to
the taxman. They also like to
support local organizations
that have personal meaning to
them. It’s quite simple, Sidney
says: “We really enjoy watching
Knowledge, and we want it
to continue on.”
Avoid Unnecessary Income Taxes
On Your Estate
If you have a will, you can choose how your assets will be distributed…
to family, close friends or favourite causes. Through charitable giving, you
can significantly reduce—or even eliminate—your tax liability.
