Dear Parents,
Addison eAdvisor
October 10, 2011
I was reading Mayor Sid Espinosa's
October update this weekend and was
impressed that he mentioned the arts
scene in Palo Alto. In fact, his exact
words were "few cities in the Bay Area
can match the breadth and vibrancy
of Palo Alto's arts scene". He went on
to give specific examples of the kinds
of arts experiences which we are so
lucky to have as part of our Palo Alto
community. Organizations such as TheatreWorks, Palo Alto
Players and the Dragon Theatre, and the continued
installation of public art by renowned artists such as Bruce
Beasley and Mildred Howard. The opportunities are endless
for classes and the arts do infuse practically every aspect
of our lives here.
Many of you will remember the piece I wrote last year
about the value of arts in education and will recall my
gratitude at working in a school district where it is still part
of the curriculum. I do feel it is one of the outstanding
hallmarks of our Palo Alto education and clearly part of
why it continues is the value our community continues to
place on the arts. Mayor Espinosa's observation of the
vitality of our community when it comes to the arts and
the experiences our children have in Palo Alto schools are

PTA Information
the experiences our children have in Palo Alto schools are
no accidents. They happen because we care about creating
a well-rounded citizenry.
If you've been at school recently, you'll notice that indeed
art is everywhere and it is high quality and it is produced
by our very own students!! The wall outside my office has
a continually changing panoply of children's art. We just
took down the linear chalk cityscapes and I am now
looking at the earth tones of aboriginal style art from room
15. I find myself drawn over and over to that beautiful
bank of pictures. But even more outstanding, as those of
you who visit regularly know, is that every room at Addison
is adorned with works as impressive. We have work
inspired by and reminiscent of Miro, Van Gogh, Picasso.
You name it! Our kids know the difference and it is fun to
discuss artistic styles with them.
Who do we have to thank for that besides a community
that values art? Our two Spectra Art teachers: Jeanette
Carlstrom and Stephanie Langley! Actually, many
classroom teachers do art as well and are part of the art
you see here but I do want to thank Jeanette and
Stephanie for being our two "formal" art teachers. Jeanette
teaches all of the kindergarten and first grades, Stephanie
sees to second, third, fourth and fifth. If you are lucky
enough to be in one of the classrooms when they are
teaching take the time to say thank you and to let them
know how much you appreciate their efforts on behalf of
our children.
Before I close and because I am discussing the arts, I also
wanted to mention the ongoing partnership between
PAUSD and TheatreWorks. They also provide a variety of
shows and experiences for students here during the day.
Later in the school year we will be featuring a production
of "Oskar and the Last Straw" for all of our students. This
assembly was commissioned by TheatreWorks and Palo
Alto Unified School District, with input from Project
Cornerstone, Steps to Success, and Project Safety Net.
It features Oskar, a former star of TheatreWorks children's
plays. In this assembly "Oskar is faced with so many
pressures! So it's easy for a kid like Oskar to feel he...can't
breathe, ...can't get it all done, ...can't figure it all out. In
another wacky tale of Oskar, his social calendar is too full,
his backpack is too heavy, and his overactive imagination
is keeping him up at night deciding on the best, most
'right' birthday present for his friend! But with some help
from his friends he learns he does have power! He is an
OK kid! He discovers his purpose and the future isn't going
to be so bad after all!"
At the end of the assembly we expect students to walk
with tools to build confidence and the developmental assets
that create healthy choices for school and life.
By the way, I also happen to know that some great
children's art will be coming up for sale at the Addison PTA
Auction on October 22. Trust me, it is worthy of owning so

don't forget to look for it!
With a view of some great art,
Jocelyn Garcia-Thome
Principal, Addison School
PTA President's Corner
I am amazed how many activities we manage to fit into a
two week period at Addison. We had a week long Book
Fair, a fantastic Hoedown, and a 5th Grade Bake Sale,
followed quickly on the heels by Walk & Roll to School
week activities, a Bike Rodeo for the 3rd Graders, and
finally an assembly for the students with an exciting group
called Crosspulse Body Music. As always, our Addison
parents and staff came out in large forces to help put on
these events (just take a look at the Arches of Addison
section). And many of you stepped up to help even though
you're working on future events or other projects (oh, and
have a home life or job). We are so lucky to have such an
involved and giving community. Not all schools can claim
such an active parent base. I want to thank you all for
jumping in to help out whenever needed.
But of course, here at Addison we don't rest for long! Our
biggest event of the year is just around the corner on
October 22nd - The Addison Auction. You won't want to
miss it. Thanks to everyone for their generous donations,
we have a wide array of parties, game tickets, services,
gift certificates, and more. Even if you can't make it to the
auction you can still bid on these great items with our
Absentee Bid Form that will be available in the Auction
Guide due out Monday 10/17. Look for it in your child's
Monday Envelope. One note for buyers: this year we will
not be taking credit card payment. You can pay for your
winnings by cash or check only. See you all in your
pajamas very soon!
Deri McCrea
PTA President
Hey Addison....Do you have your PJs ready?
We are 2 weeks away from the best Pajama Party and most incredible auction you will
have ever attended! Addison Dreams is on October 22nd at 6:30pm at Lucie Stern's
Community Center and we hope you are planning to be there.
While child care is sold out...tickets are not! We will be selling tickets at the door for
$25/each, which is a really good deal for the 3 D's...Dinner, Drinks and Dancing! And
the decorations...you will be stunned at what we've come up with this year. We will
have you seeing stars...all night, literally.
We've closed the donation window and we just want you to know....Addison has some
of the most generous and creative families in the entire world! You will be blown
away by the amazing auction boards...which some say could be on the auction block

as art, but You will seriously Pull the Stuffing out of Your Stuffy Over the Stuff up for
Auction this year. We will actually have some boards on campus in the coming week
so you can see for your self the types of items we have for bid.
So...just a reminder....are now meeting twice a week at Marina Zago's home as we
add the final touches for Addison Dreams, feel free to contact us if you want to help!
We are getting sooo excited.....aren't you?
