Principal Thoughts
Dear Addison Parents,
Thank you all so much for coming to
Back To School Night last week. The
teachers all worked hard preparing for
you and I know they appreciate your
support. We are lucky to have a such
a fantastic staff, and introducing them
is always one of my favorite parts of
the school year. Speaking of which,
I want to thank those of you who donate to Palo Alto
Partners in Education (PiE) for helping us with some of that
staff. As you know PiE funds the instructional aides, Bill the
Science guy, and SPECTRA art, among other things!
In today's newsletter I want to summarize the changes in
the staff at the start of this new school year. We are sorry
to say good-bye to some old friends, but happy to have
some fantastic new people join us.
We welcome Mrs. Sarah Jados to kindergarten (room 3)
and Mrs. Katie Bramlett to fourth grade (room 12).
Sylvie Cordova, who also teaches at Duveneck, is
teaching one day a week (Thursday) in third grade, with
Mrs. Wang who teachers on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Friday.
We have two student teachers who have joined us this
year. Frances Foster (who many of you already know as
a former Addison parent, PTA President and instructional
aide) is a student teacher in fourth grade with Mrs. Ando.
Patty Yewdell is student teaching in fifth grade with
Mrs. Kageyama. Both of these individuals have fit right
into the staff and are already working hard with our kids!
Tanya Meyers has joined us from Juana Briones as our
new teacher for English Language Learners, and
Kim Kallman is replacing Sabrina Cheng, our speech
and language specialist, who is out on maternity leave.
On our instructional aide staff, there have been a few
changes: Aldo Quintero, and Bubba and Sarrie
Paguirigan (who you read about last week) have
accepted new positions elsewhere. Instructional aides who
are new to the staff this year include Molly Naughton and
Brandi Walters. Molly is supporting kindergarten and
second grade classrooms, while Brandi Walters is helping
with student activities and kindergarten P.E.
The beginning of the year is filled with transitions. I
appreciate everyone's warm welcome to these new folks
and well wishes for those who have moved on.

Project Cornerstone will talk about the 2010 survey in
which they surveyed over 4,000 students within the
PAUSD. The survey measured developmental assets, which
are the positive values, skills, relationships and
experiences that help young people grow up to be healthy,
caring and responsible adults.
What did the survey reveal about how Palo Alto
kids perceive the support they receive from
their community?
How can we as parents start to affect these
Developmental Assets for our children in
elementary school?
What are concrete ways we can give our children the
support they need through instilling positive values,
constructive use of time, clear boundaries, social
competencies, a commitment to learning and more?
Come find out how Palo Alto youth are doing and how you
can make a difference.
Lice Patrol - Volunteers Needed Immediately!
Would you like to volunteer for an important job at Addison?
Would it help to know that it only requires 3.5 hours of your time
over the course of the school year? And, is it nice to know that giving
said time for said job means being appreciated SO VERY much? Well
then, Lice Patrol is the volunteer opportunity for you!
It's a great way to get to know all the kids in your child's class. It
happens during the hour right before your child's pick-up time. All materials are
provided. You just have to attend one training, and 3 check times. That's it!
The dates required are: September 7 (8:30 training, then one hour before pick-up),
and January 11th and April 12th (one hour before pick-up).
Contact Kristy Frey, the lice patrol coordinator, if you are ready, willing, and able to
help with this important task.
Support Our Kids and Addison Through PiE
Partners in Education (PiE) is looking to have its
biggest Back to School ever, with a challenge grant
that will match EVERY DOLLAR GIVEN through
September 7, up to a total of $300,000. Please
make a gift today to PiE! Your donation will enhance your child's experience at
Addison by funding a variety of enrichment and support programs that affect them
every day. Our suggested gift is $800 per child, but any amount that is meaningful to
your family, higher or lower, will be appreciated. You can donate online at
www.papie.org/donate.
Thank you in advance for helping to keep our schools strong for our kids through
